The Hotel Alexis...hasn't anyone heard these guys???

I ran a keyword search and never found a single mention of this band. So I started a topic.

Their album, The Shining Example Is Lying on the Floor, is certainly in my top 5 of the year, but I haven't heard anyone talk about it anywhere. I decided to check them out based on a recommendation in the Aquarius newsletter (aquariusrecords.org), but for a while I just thought it was an average sleepy folk album. But one day the songs just clicked. The arrangements are relatively sparse, but almost every plucked string or slide guitar effect is fucking perfect.

My August Name is probably my favorite folky song I heard this year.

So...has anyone else given these guys a listen? Highly recommended...

it's a beautiful album. very subtle. the power and the beauty of the songs sneak up on you. go back and check out the Golden Hotel and Torrez CDs. so good.

it's in my top 5 as well. it's only a cd-r, so when it's re-released next year, i'm sure a ton more will jump on it. dusted magazine will run a feature on the band in late january.

I'm based out of Portsmouth, NH and have seen these guys a couple of times - Sid Alexis is well known in our corner of the northeast, but it would be great if his album found better distribution.

Sid's pretty involved in music around Portsmouth. He used to book a weekly series at the Red Door, called Hush Hush Sweet Harlot; it's since been taken over by Laurel Brauns, another singer-songwriter.

Glad to hear Dusted is covering him.
