who do you think will be big? regardless of whether or not they're any cop?

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope the Czars finally are, but I fear they're inexplicably doomed.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

looks like El Presidente might be big (at least, as big as Electric 6) - that lead singer needs to be more like Chilly Gonzales tho, on first impression. the video for 'Rocket' is very 'Take Me Out' (same wizard-like director Jonas Odell)

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Vitalic

live on Radio 1 tonight at Midnight for 1 Hour !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Predicting Bloc Party will make a decent-sized splash over here in the U.S. with 'Silent Alarm'. Dark Horse pick for out of nowhere band: The Cloud Room.

Yoshinorimike, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

2005 belongs to The Magic Numbers. If you disagree with this I have not the words.

john-paul, Thursday, 23 December 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i disagree, tho i have not yet heard them.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 23 December 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

this oughta be a funny thread in about a year.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 December 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Stars, perhaps.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 23 December 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone from a band's working on his/her solo album right now and we'll be fighting about its merit in August after it leaks a month before it's released in September.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 23 December 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

2005 will be the year when Flaming Lips will finally make a much deserved commercial impact in the album charts all over the Western world.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 23 December 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

chinese democracy

noizem duke (noize duke), Thursday, 23 December 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil Scrappy.

Taliban Trimm.

Gwen Stefani.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 23 December 2004 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it might be the year for The Capitol Years to break.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 23 December 2004 06:42 (twenty-one years ago)

2005 belongs to The Magic Numbers. If you disagree with this I have not the words.

a good start would be to release something that isn't stupidly fucking limited. for fuck's sake.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 23 December 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

From what I've heard the Cloud Room wouldn't be so out-of-nowhere: they're from NYC and could slot without too much shoving into the next Walkmestrokerspolefant kind of slot. Depending on whether they release a quality LP or not. So I could see it, but I doubt they'll do particularly better than, say, Elefant or Stellastarr have, which one supposes isn't so terrible, in the end.

nabiscothingy (nory), Thursday, 23 December 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

They'd be the Americanized Ocean Rain to everyone else's early-Bunnymen! (Except they appear to have enjoyed the Ocean Blue as well.)

nabiscothingy (nory), Thursday, 23 December 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate Bush's album.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 23 December 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe the reigning sound / dirtbombs.

jeremiah (jeremiah), Thursday, 23 December 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The Delgados are releasing Girls Of Valour as a single on the 28th February. I've got my fingers a bit crossed hoping that it's the one that finally puts them over the top.

And out the same day - The Futureheads do Hounds Of Love. Make it #1, cos if it isn't then Il Divo will be...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 23 December 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Technology and stuff.

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 23 December 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yr gonna have a miserable 2005 if u dont like our gwen.
like beyonce in 2003 only way huge-r.

piscesboy, Thursday, 23 December 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

essentials.

scg, Thursday, 23 December 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I get the feeling that a lot of the stuff we've already been talking about on this site for the past year will trickle into the mainstream over 2005. I think that the Annie record will be a modest success in the US and will really surprise a lot of mainstream journalists.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

akira the don.

hopefully.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Reggaton performer K-Mil will chart with a solo album. (I don't know if she has one in the works, but it seems like a safe bet.)

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Mylo album will be huge when they rerelease it in the new year.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Just wrote a massive elegiac spiel about The Magic Numbers, echoing both of the above sentiments - 2005 belongs to The Magic Numbers. If you disagree with this I have not the words. and a good start would be to release something that isn't stupidly fucking limited. for fuck's sake. - but it got eaten by server trouble or summink, so, uh, just assume I was more enthusiastic than you've ever heard me about a new band. Wow. Album in February, more of their alchemic gigs immiment. Watch them eat the western world. http://www.themagicnumbers.net for info. End of message.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Marissa Marchant

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine that Kano's profile will rise with some actual releases.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

same with MIA

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The Departure to make a P-fork type splash

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Kaiser Chiefs, hopefully.

zeus, Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA's had at least two proper singles on XL now, and neither of them seemed to do anything, which is a little odd. Perhaps when the album comes out...

And I pray to anyone at all that The Departure will fuck off quietly.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

oh oh.

are you lot going to force the magic numbers on me like you did Annie ?

(which i am indebted to you all for BTW ..)

xpost. re departure .. haha !

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just realised my actual answer:

MISTY'S BIG ADVENTURE

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Sa-Ra Creative Partners

mark it down.

jimmy_tango, Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Bit out of the loop as I can't download but I know Roll Deep Crew have got something coming out. It won't explode in the mainstream but I'll probably love it.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Big hip-hop: The Game and Immortal Technique.
Big dance: Tiefschwarz and Black Strobe. Possibly Tiga, Ada, Rex the Dog.
Big indie: LCD Soundsystem and Bloc Party.
Big grime: Kano and Lady Sovereign.

I like all of these (not sure yet about The Game), so I'm optistically biased.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Rebirth Brass Band was in the last XXL article about Soulja Slim, maybe Juvenile or someone will use them on a big track.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread = a lot of wishful thinking (no offense anyone!)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm optistically biased

I also need an optician. I meant optimistically. What s1ocki said.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Departure is a sadly accurate prediction. They really are several shades of suck.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Sons & muddafuggin' Daughters!

Glasgow psych-folk droods Lucky Luke!

Fuck the Departure. Fuck them and the bandwagon they rolled in on.

And let's hope Heartbeat is the tune that finally pushes Annie overground.

stew, Friday, 24 December 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 24 December 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yah, bloc party is going to do what the futureheads did in 2004. they will be big here.

wait until pitchfork reviews silent alarm.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 24 December 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait until their singer quits sounding like shit.

Steev (Steev), Friday, 24 December 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Scissor Sisters. In America.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Friday, 24 December 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Friday, 24 December 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

If Gwen goes on tour with Annie and the Scissor Sisters then it's all over

Nancy Boy (Nancy Boy), Monday, 27 December 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

kissin' and dancin'

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm looking forward to lots of both.... i start practising tomorrow!!!!!!!

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Lady Sovereign deserves to be HUGE in 2005

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus-Tech will gain more cult cachet - the Spongebob soundtrack might be the tip of an iceberg.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Monday, 27 December 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hopefully the Cut Copy album will get a proper re-release in the UK.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 27 December 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes to that! XL, do it now.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Monday, 27 December 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict that some as-yet-unknown band will become extremely successful in 2005 that's even worse than our most extreme musical nightmares.

Bimble..., Monday, 27 December 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post - i stumbled across that El Presidente single/video for 'rocket' on cd:uk a couple nights ago. Think I hate them with a passion already & it's not even 2005 yet, my heart sank involuntarily within after all of about 10 seconds of it, like i'd gotten sucked into daytime Xfm. An Electric 5-esque quick rise & subsequent even quicker disappearance would be preferable, if we must have them at all. argh!...

and the Departure too, haha, oh god just one of many who will hopefully fuck off & die painfully...

tipssss......? Rusty Sheriff, with any luck/justice. that'd be nice. his new stuff sounds absolutely deadly, if that's what'll be on his album. finally portsmouth has more to give the musical world than the Cranes and piles of awful noelrock bands (still! hello, 21st century!!?).
When's the bloody Durrty Doogz album ever coming out, too? Or will that get buried in the most useless new-releases week ever, like with 'Forward Riddim'...
And "Heartbeat" to be no.1 for the whole year......

petef (pete badmusik), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

new Kidz Bop will be amazing

Mickey, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

mark my words!

Mickey, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard pas/cal play a song off of their album on the radio the other day and while they won't be huge they'll surely get four or five commercials out of their album. the song 'o honey, we're ridiculous' sounded like of montreal playing a belle and sebastian song. they said the album is going to be heavier.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

jeff chang

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

they (pas/cal) have already got three commercials!! m4tt j4cobsen is making a killing off 'em.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 06:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i think cut copy is getting a UK release through Modular in early 05.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

chinese democracy

2005, not 2050.

MIA? Don't think so. Lady Sovereign? I'm hoping, rooting, kriss-krossing my fingers. Give it to me, baby!

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

AGAIN on Lady SOV.
She's one guest on an Eminem track away from lighting up America.
Ch Ching!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Deadlines & Diets" will give Girls Aloud their first US hit.

assseenontv, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

And "Heartbeat" to be no.1 for the whole year......

Rizz (Rizz), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

matt boch, did zach baron ever put out that tiny hawks album this year? or was it a split? either way...

Nick Sylvester, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The Shins, Bright Eyes and Death Cab for Cutie will be like Madonna, Prince and Bruce in '84.
