Man, I love singers called Cantrell. I have just discovered her through John Peel playing 'Queen of the Coast' (see, he's not just there for the nasty things in life like a siege mentality festive 50) and I love her to bits. Also, she looks like someone I (wouldn't) meet at one of Michael Jones and Pam Berry's parties.

What do you think?

I think she's great. Queen of the Coast is actually one of a handful of originals on her album-- it's mostly covers but the performances are precious. Here's a link to the webpage for her radio show (on WFMU, the best station anywhere in my opinion) webpage http://www.dieselonly.com/radiothriftshop/

>>> Man, I love singers called Cantrell.

You mean there are others?

I feel astounded that you've just discovered her, as Stevie T has been going on about her (and successfully converted me) for what feels like decades (but is really mere months).

Yes: good material, sparse arrangements, fine voice.

actually you can listen to her show online right now at http://www.wfmu.org/audiostream.shtml

So you like Alice in Chains too, Nick?

I was about to say, Josh.

[Laura Cantrell won the Festive Fifty last year]

You're thinking of Niko(sp?) Case, but Ms. Cantrell did v. well too. As I sort of said on the F50 thread, where was the country this year, then?

six years pass...

So, she's got a new digital-only EP out (apparently it's been out since, er, April, but I only just noticed it on the Bob Harris Country tracklisting). Anyone heard it?

Nope, and she's touring again for the first time in awhile (since she had a baby). I was kinda disaapointed by her live and on disc several years ago (she was not bad just average), but liked her radio show the 2 times I heard it.

The only thing I've liked by her is that 14th Street song.

three years pass...

she's doing a DJ fill-in at her old stomping grounds right now

cool, "the radio thrift shop"

Loved the first two albums but the third one didn't grab me and that was that. No new full-length album of original material for seven years. Shame.

i've liked the albums of hers I've heard. what's her deal, she's actually a banker or something? too much banking to do to make new albums?

tylerw, Monday, 5 March 2012 22:39 (thirteen years ago)

I thought she was just a busy Mom

curmudgeon, Monday, 5 March 2012 22:42 (thirteen years ago)

She used to work on Wall St around the time of the first two albums but I was never sure if she gave it up for good or not.

Both a busy banker and a Mom of a 5 year-old

One of the things I liked most about those early records was the clarity of her voice. Not only does she sing very sweetly but she also enunciates very carefully, like a female Al Stewart or something.
