Never in my life would I thought I would hear these words being sung by Nick Cave, but I just did.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago)

i think it's a great lyric

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:40 (twenty years ago)

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Is it a Frampton cover?

Second worst lyric on the new album.

That's the people's frappe right there.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:58 (twenty years ago)

I like the song where he makes funny noises to illustrate the lyrics (like bombs and I forget what else).

I don't understand at all how anyone could think the frappacino line is bad.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 24 December 2004 01:13 (twenty years ago)

I'll take the bait: Sean, what's the worst?

derrick (derrick), Friday, 24 December 2004 02:58 (twenty years ago)

"God was a major player in heaven"

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:15 (twenty years ago)

I mean, at least the frappucino line is supposed to be amusing. The line about God being a major player is just dumb.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that is really dumb.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:25 (twenty years ago)

So you think the major player line is merely sincere? Uh...

Both these lines, and many more, are so Dylanesque to me, it's insane. In tone and effect, the frappucino line is exactly like Dylan's line about buying a "brand new plether coat," from Time Out Of Mind.

I don't know the new Nick Cave album, but that frappacino line is great.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 24 December 2004 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Naw, I don't think he meant the God line sincerely either, but when it hits, it doesn't sound Dylanesque to me, it just sounds clunky, like the kind of "profound" line a teenage would write trying to find a rhyme for "G minor 7". It's not particularly funny or clever, to me, and it just hits me in a bad place.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 24 December 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago)

it encapsulates the existential absurdity of modern life in one fell swoop and made me spit out my vitamin water all over my monitor

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Friday, 24 December 2004 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Hi usualchannels!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 24 December 2004 14:01 (twenty years ago)

I love both these lines (ESP the first, ESP coming from Nick Cave) but I haven't heard the record so who cares
