"I Am My Own Friend"

(Jon L), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Lars's dad should totally have his own band. They should sound like a cross between Soft Machine, Yahowah 13, and Naked Aggression. I'd sell my car for that record.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:05 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
2 hours of the actual movie under my belt...8 hours left!!!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Saturday, 5 February 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

why isnt this at my local blockbuster? :-(

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 5 February 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

me too, naked bean! I just finished watching the dvd - i like how disc one is basically JUST the movie, and disc two JUST extras - makes it seem less insurmountable. Tomrrow I'll get to the second disc for sure.

My wife's sole reaction, midway through: "These are not smart men."

Kirk is TOTALLY the 'lukewarm water!'

I have a big soft spot for Metallica - I really like most of Load - and I liked St Anger UNTIL I saw the process - the ProTools, the communal lyric writing, the recording in Hawaiian shirts - ugh.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 5 February 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

Kirk is TOTALLY the 'lukewarm water!'

OTM

57 7th (calstars), Saturday, 5 February 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Metallica post-Master of Puppets = shit. This movie is basically a real life Spinal Tap though. I watched it again a few nights ago. Totally awesome, but it kinda lags. I mean... how much arguing do we really care about?

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 5 February 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

I don't find that it lags. The pathos, the tension, even (especially?) in the wordless exchanges...I think it's a really accurate snapshot of a band in serious decline.

It made me wonder, for the first time, though - what will the FOLLOW UP to St Anger sound like? Will there even BE one?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 5 February 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it only lags because it was my second viewing; I don't know. And yeah, wtf are metallica doing to themselves? Just break up, invest some of your cash moneys and live happily for the rest of your lives. Churning out boring, parent-approved metal into your late forties can't be all that appealing?

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 5 February 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Will this movie make me wanna not listen to "Puppets" again? That is my only fear for this movie.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 5 February 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

do they say "'tallica" a lot? I really want to see it but I dunno if I can handle hearing the word "'tallica" repeatedly.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 5 February 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

xpost on the contrary. It'll make you appreciate the youthful dunderheaded genius of Kill>Puppets even more.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 5 February 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

I just watched this.
a. God what a bunch of fucking moron losers.
b. It made me want to listen to Master of Puppets.

shieldforyoureyes, Sunday, 6 February 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

consensus: master of puppets pwns.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 6 February 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Master of Puppets = marvellous

St.Anger = bad Therapy? impression.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Sunday, 6 February 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

has anyone listened to the metallica commentary track? didn't seem to be a whole lot there. but then i wasn't too terribly patient about it.

andrew s (andrew s), Sunday, 6 February 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Just watched this. Enjoyed it immensely as a movie about the creative process (see also Mike Leigh's "Topsy-Turvy")--even though it's a process that results in an awful product. I'm actually pretty amazed that they had the guts to let it come out. Not that THEY did, but that ANYONE would. Although I found myself sympathizing with Kirk a lot--I like his attitude.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 17 February 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

I felt a little weird for the new bass player- how did things work out for him?

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

WHAT A BUNCH OF FUCKIN PUSSIES. SO LAME.

LARS GETTING WINDED!
KIRK LOSING HAIR!
JAMES SOBER MOTORCYCLE DAD!
BOB ROCK, DOES NOT ROCK.

=TEH ZONE.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Enjoyed it immensely as a movie about the creative process (see also Mike Leigh's "Topsy-Turvy")

Hey, nice comparison! (I am a massive Topsy-Turvy fan.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I went in believing the "real-life Spinal Tap" stuff but I don't think it really got to that level.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I know the movie wasn't supposed to be historical, but whenever they showed some of the footage of the old days (stadium madness, recording the black album, backstage in 82 with Mustaine), I got really psyched. And then they would cut back to Lars bitching in the studio while James helped himself to more grapes. Fuck.

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Lars's dad is cool.

shieldforyoureyes, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

"I would press delete" is the greatest quote of this new century...!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

this movie was awesome! hilarious and kinda beautiful. i loved it.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 5 March 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

I found the film depressing and lame, and I can't imagine the DVD improves matters much.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 March 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

The whole Lars-as-art-collector segment made me want to throw my copy of Ride the Lightning on the stove.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 March 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

I read an interview with Phil Towle (I think it was in Vanity Fair but I could be wrong). Well after the documentary had been completed, one of the band members was still paying him for his services. He wouldn't say who. Even money that it is/was Hetfield.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 5 March 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

man, kirk hammet looks like he's about to cry during the whole movie!

latebloomer: Klicken für Details (latebloomer), Saturday, 5 March 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

The DVD increased my respect for them, if that's not a perverse viewpoint. Up till then I thought of them as testosterone fuelled and not very bright. Wrong on both counts.

moley (moley), Saturday, 5 March 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

What, he should be collecting Bolivian marching powder?

The thing that was gross about the art thing was the sale at Sotheby's. Like he needs more money? WTF?

I just totally didn't understand why they bother, The whole ley's-jam-and-use-ProTools-to-find-a-riff thing; Jesus. I could crap better riffs in my sleep. THAT was pitiful.

ianinbrooklyn, Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

this is one of my favorite movies ever. Bonus footage was great too. did that asstastic Ja Rule collabo ever come out? WE DIIIID IIIIT!!!

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I mean the ending is a bit awkward as their setting it up for a hard-earned victory despite the fact that the music blows, but goddamn this thing almost has as many classic moments as spinal tap. Lars even uses the words "shit sandwich."

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

and Kirk one-ups Derek Smalls with his bitchfit about being denied solos (really the only thing he has in life, aside from a giant pile of money)

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

moley - you don't think they all come off as "not very bright?"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

hmmm brighter than I thought they'd be. I thought that they'd be what you Americans call dumbasses. No, not that dumb. Inarticulate, filled with repressed rage and testosterone, sure - but surprisingly full of goodwill too. I especially liked Lars - and, of course, his dad. The guitarist was a little annoying.

moley (moley), Saturday, 5 March 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

I really disliked the psychiatrist however. He appeared to be trying to make them his personal project. Those affirmation signs in the studio and that dreadful conversation about 'the zone'. When he broached the zone, the sarcastic look that flashed across Lar's face was so priceless we had to rewind and see it again.

Someone said here that Metallica were aspiring on that album to the kind of sound that Meshuggah were already achieving. That is so TRUE. Although my impression is, only Lars could hear the wisdom of that linear riffing approach in his head, and the others weren't quite hearing it in theirs. Each of their tracks they were jamming - perhaps all they needed to do was hang on the one riff and just groove with a textural blur of instruments, with the vocal pasted over the top of it, but damn they just kept complicating the structures.

moley (moley), Saturday, 5 March 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

I'd actually hear the whole album remixed with a 'real' snare replacing the 'half snare' (ie a shitty tom) that Lars chose - why didn't anybody step in and say "Hey man - that sounds like popcorn popping in a distant room...NOT heavy, dude"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 5 March 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Torben Ulrich saying "de-lete that" is the heaviest thing in the whole movie.

Kirk Hammett already looks like he's going to cry on the back of Kill 'Em All! (Is that what Douglas likes about him?)

They spent millions on a production team that had obviously never used Pro Tools before. The rehearsal DVD that came with STANGER is honestly good.

But I haven't listened to Master of Puppets since seeing the film over a year ago.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Saturday, 5 March 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

That psychiatrist is the funniest guy in the movie. I can't believe he lasted as long as he did. I love how there's this bright white light on Hetfield when he calls the guy an angel.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 March 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

The Zone is definitely one of the Top Ten Things Christopher Guest Probably Wishes He'd Thought Up

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 March 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Another classic moment: Lars talking about his dad Torben, who is in the background, with a walking stick, flexing and stretching one leg, looking utterly eccentric, like Tolstoy preparing to run a sprint race.

moley (moley), Sunday, 6 March 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Not eccentric at all, just 10x more human then anyone else, carrying the humanity for the film. He probably soaks his hand in a glass for water for nutrition. Maybe he meditates to Dr. Suess, I dunno, but he was Denmark's answer to Bjorn Borg.

Here's his art -- tennis balls on rice paper, naturally:

http://www.play-the-game.org/pictures/torben_ulrich/painting1.jpg

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Sunday, 6 March 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Wonderful! And what you say is quite true of course. Although I wonder if it might be a little intimidating to have Torben as one's father.

moley (moley), Sunday, 6 March 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

That artwork you posted, Ian, strikes me as entirely in the spirit of Zen calligraphy - all the more so for being done with his own familiar tools, ie a tennis ball.

moley (moley), Sunday, 6 March 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

Sentimentalist that I am, I loved Trujillo's reaction when Hetfield tells him how he makes the band sound so much better, man.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Sunday, 6 March 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah, trujillo genuinely seems like a sweetheart, doesn't he?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 6 March 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

shit yeah!! when they're like "you're in metallica and we want to give you a million dollars" he looks like he's gonna start crying tears of happiness.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 6 March 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

this is one of the greatest movies ever made.

james hetfield, in this movie, is one of the worst singers and worst lyricists of all time. hammett's "your lifestyle is your deathstyle" or whatever is easily better than anything hetfield comes up with the entire movie.

typo hell # 8: many beers at this point and is ready to retirement (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 October 2021 19:37 (four years ago)

i will put on a phil collins mask and marlon brando method act lars ulrich playing that beat, i promise you that

typo hell # 8: many beers at this point and is ready to retirement (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 October 2021 19:38 (four years ago)

i have to say, lars comes off so well when he's talking about painting. it's the best side of him, the person who truly gets PSYCHED about art. especially when breaks that wine glas

typo hell # 8: many beers at this point and is ready to retirement (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 October 2021 19:41 (four years ago)

i realize he's supposed to look like the ultimate dick when he sells his collection for many millions of dollars and instead focuses on "his pain" in letting them go. but i dunno. he's had a lot of money for a long, long time. he does seem sad to see them go, for real.

the psychologist is an asshole because he didn't suggest the one thing that would have made early 21st century Metallica worthwhile.

he should have suggested the KISS approach and had all of them do their own solo albums

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Monday, 4 October 2021 13:41 (four years ago)

James Hetfield's album probably woulda been some warmed over Waylon Jennings-styled rock

Kirk woulda tried to write a jazz/blues album and it woulda sucked bad

Lars might have done a spoken word album

least interesting woulda been Jason cos we already know what his stuff woulda sounded like

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Monday, 4 October 2021 13:43 (four years ago)

Love this movie (I saw it in the theatre!), really such a foundational touchstone and the perfect sequel to "Year And A Half In The Life".

I really think Lars in general comes off the best in the movie, he's annoying and arrogant, but he's genuine and the eye-roll he does when Mustaine starts crying is like seriously all-time, I could never hate the guy after that
