David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Jack White shops at Guitar Center? Is Wal*Mart too far away from his house?

Pleasant/Plains, Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:54 (twenty years ago)

was it a victrola?

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Y'know, it could be a Christmas gift.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Oh, yeah right. Like Renee Zwellinger would know how to operate a turntable.

Pleasant/Plains, Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:30 (twenty years ago)

I saw him at Target.

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:34 (twenty years ago)

My friend saw Joe Montana at Toys R Us.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I saw Joe Montana on my TV!

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why everyone is leaping to the DJ conclusion, he probably just wants his nephews to stop listening to mp3s or something.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it was a cake turntable.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:04 (twenty years ago)

[ DJ 3l1t3 ]

hmmph, bet it was a gemini or stanton or denon or something lamo like that

[ /DJ 3l1te ]

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:06 (twenty years ago)

geminis and stantons aren't cool? my friend (very same friend who was at guitar center) is a DJ and said they were nice.

what are considered cool in the dj world?

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:07 (twenty years ago)

TECHNICS

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:13 (twenty years ago)

anything not technics 1200 is just for hoseheads eh. 1200s can flip over backwards and kill children, and still work perfectly afterwards.. not these fisher price spinning plates. maybe theyre good for grilling back bacon. *snort snort gasp* hey, take off eh?

DEEEEEEJAY L3333333T MacKenzie (donut), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:13 (twenty years ago)

sorry, T3CHN1C5

I thought they hated hip-hop. I remember JW saying something in Rolling Stone along the lines of "Kids today with their video games and their weed smoking and their hip-hop and their nu-metal - they have no culture" or somesuch.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:30 (twenty years ago)

"Dead Leaves and the Ol' Dirty Ground"

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:32 (twenty years ago)

I bet he made sure to get one that played 78s.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Maybe Loretta's gonna be getting jiggy wit it for her next album.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

i'll see him tonight at the magic stick, i'm pretty sure. will make sure to quiz him about it.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:26 (twenty years ago)

You totally should!! I was looking through the archive of shows at the Empty Bottle in Chicago and saw a show as recent as March 2001 where the Stripes were playing for $8.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Steely Zan! excellent.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 24 December 2004 02:59 (twenty years ago)

I heard that you (Jack White) and your band (The White Stripes) have sold your guitars and bought turntables! I heard that everybody you know is more relevant than everybody I know!

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm not all that surprised he likes vinyl to be honest

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:35 (twenty years ago)

i just inherited a turntable that plays at 78 and 16!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:36 (twenty years ago)

oh wow. my parents had a record player with 16.
Hot tip: Play some 45s at 16, omgwtf.
Beck's Loser 12" sounded like a Melvins song with Chris Barnes on vocals, but heavier.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:40 (twenty years ago)

( I never tried a 78 at 16. I can't even imagine.)

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:41 (twenty years ago)

I saw Paul Oakenfold buying a copy of 'Elephant' at a petrol station yesterday.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

I saw Flava Flav buying a big mac once

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 24 December 2004 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Lock thread.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 24 December 2004 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Let's not forget that Kanye West cited White Stripes as 'the white band that black people like'.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 05:02 (twenty years ago)

Several posts on this one have left me in hysterics. But I have only two questions: 1) Can a turntable REALLY kill children?? 2) Are there really honestly records that can be played on some turntable somewhere at 16 for god's sake?!

Bimble..., Friday, 24 December 2004 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Can a turntable REALLY kill children??

If you put knives on it

STOP WITH YOUR PTANS (natepatrin), Friday, 24 December 2004 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Maybe he bought it for his wife?

(Hi Ken!)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 24 December 2004 05:32 (twenty years ago)

ok thats what always got me. they have the 16 setting on these old turntables, but I have NEVER seen a record that is meant to be played at 16. What do they look like? Are they 10" like a 78? bigger? smaller? someone find out for us...
xx-post

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 05:33 (twenty years ago)

I think we should hold off on the White-Stripes-going-hip-hop assumptions until someone sees Jack White buying TWO turntables...

"33 1/3 is the slowest speed used for music. LPs were manufactured to revolve at 16 RPM, but these were predominantly spoken word educational discs."

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 December 2004 05:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, someone has gotta make a song where those 16rpm bible records are sampled at 78. I bet it would sound kinda like the backwards horn sample in "Rebel Without A Pause".

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 06:02 (twenty years ago)

My friend Jack White saw some guy checking him out in Guitar Center. I wonder if it's the same guy. He said it was really uncomfortable and he wished he just sent his butler but his butler doesn't know shit about equipment. He's the singer in that band White Stripes. Anyway, he sent me a pic on cell phone, so if it's the same guy, then I saw your friend seeing my friend in Guitar Center... and he's a douche.

Metal Braces, Friday, 24 December 2004 06:08 (twenty years ago)

Hi Meg. Glad you're getting you're teeth fixed.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 06:15 (twenty years ago)

Oh like Jack only has one friend! Seriously, how'd you know it was me?

Meg, Friday, 24 December 2004 06:19 (twenty years ago)

METAL BRACES = NEW LCD SOUNSYSTEM SINGLE

TITS.JPG (ex machina), Friday, 24 December 2004 06:20 (twenty years ago)

I have never actually listened to this LCD Soundsystem.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 06:21 (twenty years ago)

Yeah!

Metal Braces, Friday, 24 December 2004 06:22 (twenty years ago)

OMFG! The Bible at 16 RPM. That explains SO MUCH!

Bimble..., Friday, 24 December 2004 06:30 (twenty years ago)

Also I really like this idea of Jack getting a turntable at guitar center and Meg getting a guitar at turntable center and them meeting up in some brilliant LCD Soundsystem mash-up or something.

Hang on, most of y'all have never bought a turntable for, like, listening to stuff?

Jack Buying Turntable = Jack Sometimes Listens To Music For Leisure. No?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 24 December 2004 06:55 (twenty years ago)

crazy talk from a crazypants!

STOP WITH YOUR PTANS (natepatrin), Friday, 24 December 2004 06:57 (twenty years ago)

So you are accusing Jack of being an audiophile?

Metal Braces, Friday, 24 December 2004 07:00 (twenty years ago)

Hang on, most of y'all have never bought a turntable for, like, listening to stuff?

Now, now. There's no need to be nasty Mr. Cabaret Voltaire.

Bimble..., Friday, 24 December 2004 07:02 (twenty years ago)

Haha, sorry, pesky voices in my head. Anyway, let's hear more about turntables killing children...

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 24 December 2004 07:17 (twenty years ago)

I wonder what would happen if you played the bible thing backwards?

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 24 December 2004 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it would kill children.

kephm, Friday, 24 December 2004 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Time for me to bug out.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 24 December 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago)

I always thought the 16 RPM setting was for playing 33 1/3 records at to transcribe fast passages of music, but I probably made that up.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 24 December 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago)

You'd have to get up pretty early in the morning to pull one over on our donut friend.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 24 December 2004 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Sean, the icing on the cake of that cat scratchin' photo are all those groovy yellow 45 RPM triskelion spindle inserts, or whatever they are called, in the background.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 24 December 2004 19:24 (twenty years ago)

I saw Spike Lee buying a meatball sub at Subway in a Malcolm X cap in 1996.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 24 December 2004 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Further proof that Evolution Control Committee is utter genius.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 24 December 2004 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm not all that surprised he likes vinyl to be honest

Didn't he have Elephant sent out on vinyl to journalists for review, saying he didn't trust the opinions of someone who didn't own a turntable?

Oh man, someone has gotta make a song where those 16rpm bible records are sampled at 78. I bet it would sound kinda like the backwards horn sample in "Rebel Without A Pause".

The horn sample is a str8, untouched sample of the JBs. Nothing was done to it.

Vic Funk, Friday, 24 December 2004 19:53 (twenty years ago)

The ironic thing is that the lead single off the upcoming Jack White hip-hop album samples the first track of The Go's self-titled.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 24 December 2004 20:29 (twenty years ago)

I was kinda hoping it'd sample that opening riff from "Time For Moon" instead. That thing is diseased.

STOP WITH YOUR PTANS (natepatrin), Friday, 24 December 2004 20:40 (twenty years ago)

the icing on the cake of that cat scratchin' photo are all those groovy yellow 45 RPM triskelion spindle

Totally. Takes on a whole new psychedelic thing. Groovy.

Bimble..., Saturday, 25 December 2004 00:11 (twenty years ago)

xxxpost- The riff in "Rebel Without A Pause" is a combination of a JB's sample and a John Coltrane sample.

-- Nag! Nag! Nag! (MarquisChaCha...), December 24th, 2004.

Well, I'd assume he'd already have one for listening. And you don't go to guitar center to get the kind of turntable just to listen to music for. They're the specialty DJ kind, I think. But I wasn't there.
