Sez our mr s in thee harpsichord thread

norman you must list yr fave 14, 16, 17 or 21 prog releases and post them post-haste — it is CD-purchasing time for mark s and is after-xmas list requires urgent balance tipping away from chart and/or wire-type material

here we go, in no particular order (off the top of my head also, 'cuz 2yo little adam is asleep, but not very, so can't check studio. May post more later)

Anglagard – "Epilog"

King Crimson – "Starless & Bible Black"

IQ – "The Wake"

Genesis – "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"

Genesis – "Nursery Cryme"

Yes – "The Yes Album"

Yes – "Close to the Edge"

Magazine – "Secondhand Daylight" (ha! HA!!!)

Twelfth Night "Fact and Fiction"

Van Der Graaf Generator – "Pawn Hearts"

Van Der Graaf Generator – "H to HE Who Am the only One"

Peter Hammill – "In Camera" (NB I like nearly all PH albums)

Henry Cow - "In Praise of Learning"

Caravan – "The Land of Grey and Pink"

King Crimson - "In The Court of the Crimson King"

Mansun - "Six"

Gryphon – "Red Queen to Gryphon Three"

National Health "Complete"

Gong – "Camembert Electrique"

Hawkwind – "Hall of the Mountain Grill"

Man – "Live at the padget rooms, Penarth"

High Tide – "High Tide" & "Sea Shanties" (2 on 1 CD hooray!)

Third Ear Band - "soundtrack from 'MacBeth'" Certainly I wouldn't recommend all of the above to prospective purchasers, thee IQ and 12th Night are for obsessives only, I phear, and there's some stuff - the hawkwind and man - that shades into brit '70's underground music. I'd include the two Harvest label classic Shirley & Dolly Collins LP's - "Love, Death and the Lady" and "Anthems in Eden", but they're folk, really. If MS bought either of those, I'd love to read his thoughts on them. On the surface, ultra-trad folk (all instruments = crumhorn, shawm, viol, all compositions "trad; arr..." etc etc) but they were really quite groundbreaking at the time, and very, very beautiful, if Shirley's unusual voice does it for you. I haven't included any "Krautrock", because if I did I would double this list easily.

Whatever. Phire away all U lot.

xoxo, & HAPPY NEW YEAR

Of course we know how miraculously and convincingly Mr Sinker's been known to exaggerate his folk knowledge ...

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haHA i already own three ov these and know five (camembart elextrique where art thou did i really sell thee?) (starless and bible black i kno full well i sold THEE cuz of singing *nevah* the Crimble strong point)

(ps 23 not a number as kate m'boom will testify)

mark s, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hush you, carmody

beside it is now the trendy thing to stress inexpertness: authority = uncool

(also: heh, padgett to thread!)

mark s, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No criticism, Mark - I was impressed. But 'twas it the done thing in 1984 when you, er, did it?

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Come now, surely KC's singing was *fine*, it was the LYRICS that sux0red so horribly EG

"The black queen chants the funeral march/the cracked brass bell will ring/to summon back the fire witch/to the court of the (drum roll, huge mellotron break) Crimson Kiii-iii-i-i-ing (etc)

Once I saw Pete Sinfield on telly being asked what a "Prism Ship" was, and how one could "Taste it's wind" (this from the above number also) his deadpan reply - "we used to take a lot of acid". Jon Anderson's lyrics also perplexing. (BTW I would poss add "Olias of Sunhillow" to the above list. Paul Stump's spiel on it in "The Music's all that Matters" is OTM IMO) However, prog lyrix at worst still nowhere near as bad as worst britpop lyrix. Time 4 bed, I think. Later U all....

Norman Phay, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

rich*rd c**k was my model as ever was = mistah authoritah! (yet he told me yrs later it was mostly front hurrah)

mark s, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You missed out Grobschnitt's GROBSCHNITT album and FLOATING by Eloy.

Kodanshi, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and compare lyrics from Buck's Fizz "Land of Make Believe" also by pete sinfield w/crimson lyrics. Same far out maaaan hippy filigree apparent IMO, even after all these years. I spoke to Robert Fripp once (V. briefly) he was weird too.

Norman Phay, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

best grobschnitt albums surely "Ballermann" and "Solar Music Live", Kodanshi? I also missed out Nektar's "A tab in the Ocean" which is quite terrible, but somehow absolutely great as well. Like I said, german bands would have doubled the list (like with about 11 popol vuh albums for starthers. I was listening to "das hoheleid salomos" last night, really good & reaches fingers into yr subconcious mind in my experience. "Das Hoheleid...." is my currend FAVE rekkid, NOTHING comes near it I digess....

Norman Phay, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I always have trouble with the prog rock tag. Is Can considered prog? Is Kraut a subdivision? I must label everything!

bnw, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Magazine – "Secondhand Daylight" (ha! HA!!!)

Wheeeee! Magazine come from the land of the ice and snow.
Formula inna Wakeman/Emrrrrrson stiiiiiiile.
"I will drug you and fuck you on the..." -- oh nvrrrmnd.

Andy K., Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Brain Salad Surgery' (ELP), 'Animals' (Floyd), 'Suspiria' (Goblin), 'Kohntarkosz' (Magma) 'Farewell to Kings' (Rush). (As you can see, my tastes tend to gravitate toward the more crass end of things.)

barring mansun and high tide i am now familiar with all of norman's suggestions, what a difference 20 years makes eh

singing in king crimson still the primary barrier, this is now unlikely to change i feel

mark s, Saturday, 8 May 2021 10:15 (four years ago)

those high tide albums are pretty crazed

unknown or illegal user (doo rag), Saturday, 8 May 2021 11:50 (four years ago)

vocals are a big part of why i avoided prog in general for many years

unknown or illegal user (doo rag), Saturday, 8 May 2021 11:57 (four years ago)

high tide is godlike, what a band

way heavy

Also featured Simon House, later of Hawkwind, although I think he failed Hawkwind's requirement to be a worse musician than Dave Brock so had to go.

they were still booing him when we were tanking in hartlepool (Matt #2), Saturday, 8 May 2021 13:20 (four years ago)

yeah they definitely feel more like a heavy rock/heavy psych vibe to me than prog I guess, that makes sense there's a Hawkwind connection

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 8 May 2021 13:28 (four years ago)

imprtant fact: simon house toured with bowie and plays on LODGER (the best bowie LP)

mark s, Saturday, 8 May 2021 13:31 (four years ago)

Boz Burrell's singing on Crimson's Islands is more approachable and less stentorian than Lake's or Wetton's. So is Gordon Haskell's on Lizard, but it's also thin and quavery.

It's nice to see Gryphon mentioned in the original post; perhaps because they were composers before they were a rock band, there are some genuinely beautiful melodies and harmonic passages on Red Queen to Gryphon Three. This in contrast to a lot of the lesser-known prog bands, who could imitate the styles of the big-name groups but didn't bring much originality to their compositions.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 8 May 2021 13:37 (four years ago)

I first saw Simon House credited with violin on Gentlemen Take Polaroids by Japan. Later, I noticed he played on Quark, Strangeness and Charm, meaning I got into Hawkwind via Japan. He's also on the Third Ear Band record mentioned above.

Putting in a good word for IQ, the best of the 80s prog revival bands. They used to encore with 'Sweet Transvestite' inc. the singer in full Frank-n-Furter drag, which isn't something you got with the likes of Pendragon.

they were still booing him when we were tanking in hartlepool (Matt #2), Saturday, 8 May 2021 14:24 (four years ago)

yeah IQ are exactly what I hoped neoprog would sound like. they're still making quality material too, all five albums they did in the 21st Century are amazing

frogbs, Saturday, 8 May 2021 21:24 (four years ago)

Is the band It Bites any good? A scritti politti fan raced about them to me once but I’m a little scared.

brimstead, Saturday, 8 May 2021 23:31 (four years ago)

raved not raced

brimstead, Saturday, 8 May 2021 23:31 (four years ago)

I've got their first album (The Big Lad in the Windmill) and it's a lot of fun, kinda close to Invisible Touch though there's much less filler. all the songs were stuck in my head at some point. it's not really proggy at all. I'm pretty curious what their later records sound like.

frogbs, Saturday, 8 May 2021 23:39 (four years ago)

I bought that It Bites album, and said elsewhere "they were a combination of Go West and 80s Yes" (aside from a funky Prince pastiche); the only thing I liked was a 30 second acoustic guitar instrumental at the end. Aside from some flashy guitar/keyboard dueling and fancy layered harmonies, they're even less prog than Marillion.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 8 May 2021 23:54 (four years ago)

frogbs, the second album, 'Once Around The World' is the best It Bites record, and has the most progressive touches, but still very much in that rather 80s fashion in a way that you could draw easy parallels with late Genesis or A-ha (or yeah, maybe even Go frickin West) The keyboard and drum sounds are especially of their time, but it's really exuberant and a little eccentric.

My fondness for it is lasting purely because I grew up listening with it but gimme that over the dowdy 'Script From A Jester's Tear' any day.

If you like this track you'll get along with the rest.

I didn't like them, but I'll agree that they are "exuberant".

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 9 May 2021 00:57 (four years ago)

well, yeah. Script for a Jester's Tear does have the excellent "Garden Party" on it but overall it's kind of a poor album right? I always felt it was prog catered exclusively to weird teenagers. does still listen to this in the year 2021?

frogbs, Sunday, 9 May 2021 03:08 (four years ago)

prog catered exclusively to weird teenagers

*cough*

I'm not eating that foreign muck *pulls face* (Matt #2), Sunday, 9 May 2021 08:50 (four years ago)

As opposed to prog catered exclusively to men aged 50+?

doug watson, Sunday, 9 May 2021 12:23 (four years ago)

Posting style was so weird in 2001.

Haven't heard IQ in several years, I seen a rave review for one of the solo albums, sounded interesting.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 9 May 2021 14:49 (four years ago)

i can't deal with it bites or francis dunnery at all. tripe. I do like one Lonely Robot album.

akm, Sunday, 9 May 2021 15:25 (four years ago)

Don't know anything about him. Lauryn Hill and Ian Brown credits are surprises.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 9 May 2021 15:40 (four years ago)

he's done a bunch of session work, yeah, and is one of the other people rumored to be the new genesis vocalist before Ray Wilson (along with Kevin Gilbert).

akm, Sunday, 9 May 2021 15:45 (four years ago)

Wow at High Tide. Really cool band. Guy sounds like Jim Morrison.
