help us pick a wedding song

originally we were gonna have "Oh My Love" by John Lennon, but I don't really want my wedding song to be a John Lennon song.

we're thinking something sweet by Nick Cave or M Ward, but we're totally looking for suggestions

"Herb "Fat" Albpert (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 24 December 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The last time I was asked this question, I suggested "Pictures" by Mojave 3. But they didn't end up using it, so that one is still up for grabs.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

xtc - big day

zeus, Friday, 24 December 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

if you're gonna go the nick cave route, there's nothin' better than "Into my Arms" i'd say.

what about "I Love How You Love Me"?

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down"

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Strauss, "Also Sprach Zarathustra"

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"At Last," Etta James
"I Only Have Eyes for You," Flamingos

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 24 December 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hawaiian Wedding Song" by the Pines, released on A Christmas Gift from Fortuna Pop! (Fortuna Pop, 2000). Perhaps you could write to the Pinefox for a copy. He posts on I Love Books.

youn, Friday, 24 December 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it seems like most Nick Cave songs are pretty tortured over love, but might I suggest "Lime-Tree Arbour" from The Boatman's Call?

Bimble..., Saturday, 25 December 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Go for M. Ward

sibsi (sibsi), Saturday, 25 December 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

beach boys' "god only knows" ? (i have to play a song at a friend's wedding and i really don't know what to play actually... it's such a tricksy task !).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Saturday, 25 December 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Happier Than the Morning Sun," Stevie Wonder
"I Don't Love You Much Do I," Guy Clark

zmelmedge, Saturday, 25 December 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

When my wife and I got hitched in a pretty formal ceremony, a good friend played guitar and sang John Denver's "Perhaps Love". It was beautiful. I'm sure that there are hundreds of songs that would work just as well. Just find one you connect with.

For our first dance at the reception we had a badly scratched vinyl recording of The Muppets' Rainbow Connection played. It's ok to bust a gasket laughing. Really! But I'll never part with that record, or Martha.

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 25 December 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

We used "At Last" as a last minute replacement because I stupidly forgot to bring the Sundays disc with "Wild Horses" on it (my wife fell in love with their version after hearing it during the "Buffy" prom scene). So my advice is, whatever you pick, don't leave it sitting home on the coffee table.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 25 December 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

beach boys' "god only knows" ?

"wouldn't it be nice" is actually about marriage...

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 25 December 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

madeline bell's "this is one girl" would be good for the reception.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 25 December 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"wouldn't it be nice" is actually about marriage...

true, but it's more about all the things that may happen in the futur while god only knows is more about a commitment right here right now, which is basically the idea of marriage...well, i'm just discussing for the sake of it cos both would be good anyway ! (which wouldn't be the case of caroline no, for instance...).

ship song!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 26 December 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

("god only knows"? with the line "i may not always love you?" i dunno man...)

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 26 December 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that line's just like an escape clause pretty much equivalent to the "until death do us part" thing - which does seem to be an oddly cold sentiment in Christian ceremonies anyway, now that I've come to think on it.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 26 December 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

christianity "oddly cold"??? why, i never!

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 26 December 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

into my arms by nick cave is a good one, I played that at the wedding. I also wanted to play Saved by Mark Eitzel but wife said NO although its entirely appropriate and beautiful; she also said no to Falling by Julee Cruise.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 26 December 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well heheh, ok, but was trying to say that it's oddly cold in relation to love and mawwiage, not Christianity. That was just the contextual hoo ha.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 26 December 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

just jokin' around, kim.

but i've found christianity (maybe catholicism particularly) to be kinda dark and creepy... especially all that jazz about the blood of christ. CREEEEPY.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 26 December 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, definitely creepy. the only thing that makes me stand the long and tedious ceremony is knowing how insanely drunk everybody's gonna get afterward ! (and with all the wonderful music written by geniuses, i don't understand why they keep singing/playing those crappy tunes...).
as for the "i may not always love u", it's followed by "long as there are stars above you"... so i guess it's an alright bail out clause !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 27 December 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and by the way, what about "somebody" by depeche mode ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 27 December 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

we picked "in my life" by the beatles. i wanted "god only knows" (i know both of them may seem terribly wedding cliche) but my husband didn't like the "i may not always love you" line.

Molly, Monday, 27 December 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Ours was -- I am shuddering to admit -- "Nobody Does it Better" by Carly Simon (for some reason, we thought it had to be a Bond theme). I was really pushing for "You Only Live Twice," but alas....

I think "WaltzinBlack" by the Stranglers would be a most excellent choice. Not joking, either.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You could do a lot worse than "It's Only Time" by Magnetic Fields.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 27 December 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

We had The Wonder of You - wanted something "classic". It was either that or "Can't Take My Eyes off You". The mister wanted "Never Tear Us Apart" but I put him straight on that one.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 27 December 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

'Fool Says' - M. Ward

wooda, Monday, 27 December 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

nobody does it better is a great song!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 27 December 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I am now wishing we had had Nobody Does It Better instead.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 27 December 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

For our first dance at the reception we had a badly scratched vinyl recording of The Muppets' Rainbow Connection played. It's ok to bust a gasket laughing. Really! But I'll never part with that record, or Martha.

That's beautiful!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 December 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"Two of Us" by the Beatles

youn, Monday, 27 December 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously it should be "Wedding Song" by the Psychedelic Furs. I love that song.

But you could always do "You're My Best Friend" or "Somebody to Love" by Queen.

Aja (aja), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but how would one dance to "Somebody to Love"? Especially that big oomphy choral bit at the end? It would look damn silly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright fine!

What was your wedding song?

Aja (aja), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

SAWII Disc One Track Three.

It is an odd choice, but I always think of watching an old film with all the crackles and visual noise that comes from old filmstock, and the people are walking out of a gigantic gothic church after the marriage ceremony. There is a vast gray eastern european sky that towers over everything, You can see out into the town, the buildings and people are a bit sad but there is a beautiful sense of meloncholy surrounding everything.

Yeah, maybe you should just play the beach boys....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and by the way, what about "somebody" by depeche mode ?

OMG, that would be my # 1 choice, too! Well, that and, um, strangely enough, David Sylvian's "Orpheus", which might be more of a song about faithful friendships, really, but aren't the best marriages partnerships between people who view each other as best friends first and foremost? Hm.

I can't stand ooshy gooshy, squishily overromantic songs. But "I Only Have Eyes For You" IS a good, solid choice I would actually enjoy. Kudos to Rickey Wright for that mention.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

bangles: eternal flame
corny as fuck, but very sincere and pretty.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG, that would be my # 1 choice, too!

yeah, for the moment, it's also my #1. seems just perfect to me (romantic but not too silly lyrics, no overblown arrangements, sweet melody...).
i also had "precious love" by marvin gaye in mind.
still, "somebody" wins it until something better pops up...
(although i enjoy it, eternal flame feels a bit too much... not sure i could handle it !).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The best one I've heard in a while was at a wedding last year where they used Blue Rodeo's "Lost Together". The right sentiment, perfect to slow dance to, minimal cheese factor - everything you'd want a "serious" love song to be. I highly recommend.

Strange and beautiful

Are the stars tonight

That dance around your head

In your eyes I see that perfect world

I hope that doesn't sound too weird

And I want all the world to know

That your love's all I need

All that I need

And if we're lost

Then we are lost together

Yea if we're lost

Then we are lost together

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Make like Peter Kay and spin 'Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy' for the bride by her father.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Pearl Jam's "Better Man" - there won't be a dry eye in the house.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck it. Make it "Black to Comm" by the MC5 and have a goddamn sweaty barn-burner of a wedding. Let there be dope, guns and fucking on the dance floor.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

best songs about weddings ever are easily "you never can tell" by chuck berry and "i knew the bride" by nick lowe, but perhaps they don't apply here.

chuck, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

'Into the Mystic' by Van Morrison was 'our song,' and we're about to celebrate out 10th anniversary, if that's any help. :)

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

WEEN "YUO FUCKED UP"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I sang the first verse of "Somebody" to my wife when I proposed to her! It was the penultimate song played at our reception (our first dance was the tango from Scent Of A Woman and True Lies, and yes, WE DID DO A TANGO).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, sorry. I did look. I guess I just scrolled down too fast. I didn't see it the first time.

And this is really weird. There's an Mp3 of "Somebody to Love" on my mom's laptop now.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I sang the first verse of "Somebody" to my wife when I proposed to her!

i hadn't listened to it for a while but as i had to pick a track for the wedding it came back to mind and i still find it beautiful. especialy the lyrics which are quite original when it comes to "love" songs.
anyway, great choice (auto-congratulation)

A and T used "I'll Stop the World and Melt with You." Cute!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

I hate to admit it but the second I woke up on my wedding day I had XTC's "Big Day" in my head. That seemed like a bad sign. We didn't have an "our song" set to play during the wedding, but the song that happened to be playing during our first dance was "Mama Said Knock You Out" and the one playing during our last dance before fleeing that joint was "Avalon" and we both thought we could've ended up with something a lot worse and so it has since become our official song.

Petroski (petroski), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

"Power of Two," Indigo Girls. Great lyrics.

Justin Shumaker (shueytexas), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

I've always thought of using "Something Changed" by Pulp, but I probably won't get married, so go ahead!

daavid (daavid), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

Another (maybe) perfect one could be "Maria, Maria" by Stephin Merritt but it has one pretty obvious limitation.

daavid (daavid), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

We used the Johnny Cash version of "memories are made of this".

chad (chad), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 05:46 (nineteen years ago)

The Wing and The Wheel by Nanci Griffith - not because it's particularly appropriate but because she's one of the very few people we both like. Also the last line is nice...

"And we'll have memories for company long after the songs are gone"

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 07:40 (nineteen years ago)

"Always And Forever", by Heatwave

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

We had 'Quiet Life' by Japan. Inappropriate but fun. We did not touch one another whilst dancing. All our friends and relations think we are weird: I am happy.
