my friend got me a comp by a band from lagos called blo a few years back. the first half is excellent afro-psych and the second is of the disco variety (not for me). does anyone out there have any of the first couple blo psych albums? amyone willing to burn them?

I have the same CD and agree that the first bit is far superior to the latter bit. anyway...the good folks at dusty groove told me that only one record ("phases", of which you speak) has been re-issued by SoulStrut, which, if I am not mistaken, went belly up last summer. So, good luck finding the rest.

Blo -- Chapters, Steps & Phases . . . CD . . . $14.99 (Item: 404562)

Seminal 70s work from Blo -- a groundbreaking Nigerian group with a sound unlike anyone else on their scene -- a mix of funk, African rhythms, and more progressive jamming that's really mindblowing! The group have a uniquely post-colonial approach to the groove -- a sound that we'd compare with a rare few like Cymande or Demon Fuzz -- and which, like those groups, eventually took London as a locus for some of the group's most experimental directions. Blo has lots of heavy rhythms at the bottom, but a lighter guitar style on the top -- one that's often scratchy and funky in ways that lighten up otherwise heavy tunes -- and which is matched by a fair bit of English language lyrics on most of the tracks on the set. There's a number of tracks on this collection that haven't been on other reissues -- a total of 14 tracks in all, with titles that include "Native Dancer", "Preacherman", "Chant To Mother Earth", "Don't Take Her Away From Me", "You're So Kind", "Scandi Boogie", "Get That Groove In", "Back To The Roots", "Back In Time", "Dance In A Circle", and "Loving & Caring".
