Featuring sultry vocals and great guitar work from ExWhiskeytown Member Phil Wandscher Oh My Girl is my favorite cd from 04. Reckless Burning, her prior cd, is also damn good. Bring the love here.

I thought Jesse Sykes was the singer for Eagles Of Death Metal. Perhaps I am mistaken...

Reckless Burning is very nice if you like trance inducing dirge-like country music. good nap music. im gonna have to check out Oh My Girl...

Anyone want to talk about the new record? This sort of American trad music isn't usually my thing but I dig her voice. To those better informed: what is comparable and how does JS stand up?

New one has a lot of Floyd / Dead going on. A grower. Didn't dig it on first pass but this time through it's sounding pretty sweet. Anyone?

Nobody, huh? Shame. I haven't felt so conflicted about a record in a long time. I mean, it's a legitimately great record, and I keep coming back to it, but I keep wavering between 'whoa masterpiece' and 'did this get mixed up at the pressing plant with some weirdo pop psych Radioactive reissue?'I'm not sure I'm listening because I love it or because it's so...strange!

i am liking it a lot

Haven't heard the new one - will have to check it out. Reckless Burning and Oh My Girl are fantastic. Her voice plus Wandscher's guitar = heaven.

I loved her first two albums, but then she kinda fell off my radar. Listened to her new one yesterday, and I'm not sure what to make of it. I think I need to turn off all the lights and give it a hard listen.

this is one of the best records I have heard in forever, agreed, it's more of a psych/UK folk record than alt-country and better for it...

just stunned by this album really. wow.

ha, ok, i'll check it out.

tylerw, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 19:34 (fourteen years ago)

listening on spotify -- this does sound cool!
kind of has a late 60s floyd-y folk thing happening which rules.
i've heard bits and pieces of sykes before, but this sounds more up my alley.

tylerw, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i went through her older albums and they are good, but she seems to have gotten way more psychey and spacey and jammy and better as time goes on, kind of evolving out of alt-country

This is really a game changer for her. Don't expect to find anything else in her disography half this spacey and weird. I'm STILL not sure if I like it! But I listen to it all the time!!

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

i'm pretty much in love after a couple listens

if she had a weird band name and was signed to some drag city subsidiary i think all the kool new weirdo america kidz would boner over this

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah seems that way -- when i see her name, i think of no depression magazine.

tylerw, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

She should change her name Jesse Psych & the Sweet Psychs!

five years pass...

I think Marble Son is the only album of her's that I don't love. good album for sure, but i don't really feel the same emotional resonance with it that I do with the others.

though I'm sure I'll love it after 5 more listens

I completely skipped over Oh, My Girl at the time and just discovered it. might be my favorite one

Just discovering her and getting that urge to plunge... The Air is Thin is practically making me levitate.

Could anyone compile a top 10 primer type thing?

Yeah! Made my No Dep ballot, and like I said:

Jesse's album---from Dave Alvin C or D, because she's also in Third Mind w Dave:
O man, this year's Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter album def has Third Mind appeal, w all original songs, sticking to me like birds on a wire, and, within overall stylization, I could tell 'em all apart on first listen---not a usual thing with this kind of cosmic balladeering. Guitar is more accompaniment than Third Mind, though always just the right turn of a note, slightly extended phrase, and can also step right out, like on title track and finale--so rec to those who would lhave liked more guitar activity, however discreet, on Double Infinity--also a bit like VU ballads--

love her first 2 albums, go back to them pretty often (and lol I see I've made the same comment 2 previous times upthread). the new material also great
