The first 3 back to love are, for what they are, good, expecially if you search for some of the most popular but good early house tracks and similia.

Just wondering if anything else in this label is good, for example the disco kandi compikation... i only recognise one or two good track on each and i'm totally ignorant of the rest... are they good, any suggestion on purchase one of these or one of other Hed Kandi series? Any discussion on this label is of some interest to someome? Are they over or undervalued??

I'll occasionally buy a hed kandi comp because it has some tracks I'd like to have on CD. I really like how they're unmixed and I like the magnet closure. When you're in the mood, they're very listenable.

The Winter Chill series is pretty good for downtempo home listenin'.

Agreed.

Reminds me of some graffiti I once saw in Barcelona: "Kill Jordi Labanda."
I'm just sayin'.

Really liked Beach House from, what, 1999? 2000? Get the feeling they've lost their way a bit since then.

Yeah, I have a whole load of older Head Candy compilations, but I haven't bothered with the more recent ones. I think they function well as a beginers guide to house tracks you were too young to pick up on the first time round and they look and feel gorgeous.

three weeks pass...
so jason brooks is pretty much *the* visual designer in electronic music from the 90s-00s? it feels a bit like saying "national socialism was *the* political philosophy of the 30s-40s" but there's something undeniable about this guy that you don't feel with, say, the designer's republic or whatever.

i revive this thread because i want to ask about the "back to love" and "twisted disco" series. any good??

PappaWheelie V, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)

nah. i always look but never leap. i actually own none of these ...

but i have downloaded and enjoyed this one and i always thought the back to life series (one, two and three) looked awesome, though i never had the luck to find any to buy.

i would also even say the "beach house" (sort of a global underground type of latin tech vibe) and "disco kandi" (very commercial) look acceptable.

from 1-23 i would really only steer clear of the "serve chilled" / "winter chill" comps.

i understand that they recently (either right before or right after the "twisted disco" comps started to come out) canned jason brooks and got someone else to do the art in a very similar but even more aggressively porny style. also around this time the series got really bad, too. whether the two are connected, who can say?

i remember that these were the only things that ever sold from the import electronic section at tower in san diego and that you never see these for sale used, ever, anywhere. and that all the hairdresser / apparel retail girls i knew from clubbing days had these on repeat in the jetta.

The first three Disco Kandi comps are a pretty efficient summation of that filter disco/diva house sound that at the time seemed like it would never lose its stranglehold on gay and commercial house clubs. I mean "efficient" positively. I never heard any after these. I bought vols 1 and 3 for my boyfriend. Subsequent entries in the series may be as strong but I haven't heard them.

My only criticism is that the artwork makes these seem more distinct than they are - there are many many comps of this nature from the late 90s / early 00s, many with a slightly higher strike rate (i.e. greater concentration of hits) than these. Roughly about one third of each of these are classic/canonical - a Best of Disco Kandi would be unstoppable.

Agree tha tthe Back To Love comps have always looked amazing, but I never picked any of them up.

i think what separates this from common-or-garden variety MoS or renaissance or pacha ibiza or mixmag covermount CDs is their slightly techy, slightly woozy deep housiness. just a few steps in the direction of - like i said - glasgow underground or something. that's a big plus for me.

these days i am a big fan of the MoS "Sessions" discs and would recommend you start with the Cajmere and Axwell volumes.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 06:54 (seventeen years ago)

wait, strike that. fuck axwell, i meant seamus haji

Axwell's "I Found U" was one of my favourite dance tracks from last year. Also on the mersh tip at the moment Eric Prydz's "Pjanoo" is pretty great.

But yeah I feel there is a clear distinction between Axwell and Haji and I think I understand why Vahid reps for the latter.

Vahid did you check out those european funky house mixes that Siegbran linked to on the UK funky house thread?

My favourite thing in this overall genre remains Moonbootica's DJ Sounds Good mix. I used it for going on a run the last week and every track almost is mindboggling.
