Where does some who hasn't heard a note of them but likes what he's read about them start?

I started at age 12 with the "Summer of Love" cassette and that was alright with me. It was indeed.

I'd start with either the Indian Summer singles comp or All Clues Lead To Megan's Bed (sic?) The latter is the best of their albums I've heard, the former includes "Kim The Waitress" and a bunch of other fine things. I sorta get the feeling they're pretty consistent--I have four of their records and none are poor. But these are my two faves pretty handily.

seconded. start with Indian Summer, then either Meagan's Bed or the more psychedelic Strung Behind the Sun. all albums since have been enjoyable but somewhat lesser.

As someone with every Green Pajamas album including all the jeff Kelly stuff i have to disagree.Strung Behind the Sun & All Clues Lead to Megans Bed are good albums but they are more pop oriented than the current Green Pajamas lineup.
I would suggest Narcotic Kisses or This is Where They Disappear which are more indicative of where they are now.Of course there is a greatest hits. For the acoustic side of the band check out Goblin Market.A Jeff Kelly side project which is quite good.Narcotic Kisses is my favorite though.
And if you're still not sure email me & i'll shoot you a mix cd.

i bought "through glass coloured roses" recently, which is a best-of of sorts i'm led to believe, and every track is just wonderful.

definitely get the Indian Summer comp.

Narcotic Kisses is one of the best records of recent years, regardless of genre. I'm not sure where I woudld start with them, but this one is a monster.
