help! track suggestions for DJ-ing that im doing

So my brother knows i like music and he has asked me to DJ at his fiancees sisters birthday party (shes 19 and its at a club with CD decks, and i cant take my turntables because they are slightly fucked).

All i know is her and her friends like slightly electroclash things, hiphop and pop. At the moment im considering either crunk/grime stuff or electro-pop (which would give me the opportunity to play the Lu Cont mix of Gwen and Annie).

Anybody think either of those is a terrible idea or any track suggestions? im a little out of the loop for grime for the last couple of months and pop remixes recently too.

As someone who's tried very hard to insert my own personal tastes into a DJ mix for a pro event like this.. (and if it's at a club, it's a pro event.), I'd go on the side of caution. I would just compromise and pick your faves and "the masses"' faves from the three genres they'd mention, especially known classics. It's her birthday after all.

Then again, dancing usually stops and goes throughout nights like this, so the downpeaks would be best for the more grime stuff, me thinks.

I don't know if you're getting paid for this, but if you are, it's best if you make your brother's fiancee's sister happy, first and foremost. (unless there's a reason for revenge, haha, which it doesn't sound like from your post.)

Just one dj's opinion.

I was going to be Johnny Smartass and list a bevvy of speed metal gems from the 80's like "Rip Ride" by Venom, but I now realize that this would be a predictably juvenile and entirely unhelpful thing to do.

Well they said i can play whatever i like.

I went to one of their club nights before and it was pretty much personal taste and people trying to look cool, but whenever i DJ i kinda like people to dance and stuff. But im just a little out of the loop, i haven't DJ-ed in about 6 months (because of the turntables thing).

Dropping some speed metal in would be pretty great though. Maybe i could throw a beat behind it somehow.

well, you know your friends and family more than I do. :) so, if they told you to play anything you want, and you do, that's their fault.

Usually though, whenever friends and family tell me to "play anything I want" they really mean "we don't give you a list of songs to play. We expect you to play the stuff we expect via mindreading.". haha.

donut christ (donut), Monday, 27 December 2004 20:46 (twenty years ago)

yeah thats exactly what it is.

i keep asking them and they are like "oh i dunno, YOU'RE the DJ!!!"

goddamn.

I don't know any of her friends so i dont really know what her friends are into, just what her and her sister like.

If you're honestly concerned about making everyone happy, then the best thing is to bring as much a variety of dance classics amongst all genres. You always have one person telling you "oh yeah, bring electro-pop and r&b" only to find out those were the genres the messenger likes and not the actual party, who actually wants to hear Bob Seger and Glenn Frey.

But fuck it. Make yourself happy, and bring some universally fun stuff just in case. That knight armor might be handy, though. :)

if I was worried like this, I'd make sure I got a CD from the person whose birthday it was, which they had burned and chosen, for emergencies.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 11:38 (twenty years ago)

If I was worried, I'd quit DJ'ing in shame (Hari, I'm happy to come play with you).

Do play Elephant man's 'Blessed' - it's awesome. And yeah, definitely Lethal B - EVERYONE in Ghana loves the shit out of it.And More Fire Crew's 'Oi'. And Dizzee too.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Hey thanks, some awesome suggestions (stuff i have but didn't think of e.g the felix da housecat track).

Does anybody have a decent sounding version of 'Galang'? Mine sounds kind of shitty. That might be a good one to play.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Happy Mondays and New Order are perfectly suited to a party atmosphere. I've heard some pretty astounding dance tracks off the DFA comp's too - Pixeltan "Get Up Say What" and J.O.Y. "Sunplus".

Bimble..., Tuesday, 28 December 2004 18:55 (twenty years ago)

DFA remix of Junior Senior's 'Shake Your Coconuts'! LCD Soundsystem - 'Yeah'! Beastie Boys - anything off Paul's Boutique!

Just bring the new Mocky "Are + Be" and you're home free!
