The Game - Documentary (Your Opinions)

What do you think? He is supposed to be 50 Cent version 2005, overhyped rapper, who'll sell one mill on the first week of release (18th January). Documentary has Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Timbaland, Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, Lil Jon etc. as producers and Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Easy-E, Nate Dogg, Obie Trice, etc. as guests. I don'like his gangstar posturing, but most of the songs are OK. "Count On Me" or "Get Your Money" could be big hits.

karl76 (karl76), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

it hasn't leaked yet.
but of the songs ive heard he's pretty boring.

adam west (adamwest), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

He seemed all right on "The Whole City Behind Us", but that lineup smacks of training wheels.

the game

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 24 January 2005 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

This shit is pretty damn tight. Kanye's beat is fucking amazing. I love all the Dre beats except that one near the end. I think the chord structure is ugly. And The Game is pretty good himself I think. He had some clever lines in there.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 24 January 2005 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

OD on the Aftermath production values. It sounds more like a brand product than a personal artistic expression. I like "Higher" and "Special" best.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"Church for Thugs" is fire, "Put You on the Game" is bananas, the rest is meh. ENOUGH WITH THE EAZY-E DR DRE ICE CUBE DOC BIGGIE TUPAC RAKIM SNOOP EMINEM TERROR SQUAD REFERENCES ALREADY.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree w/ JoB about it sounding more like an Aftermath record than a Game record but isn't that going on with most labels these days?? I actually like that sometimes though. Back in the day you always knew what to expect from a Wu Tang or Def Squad production whether it be a group or solo project.

So Busta's on Aftermath now right?? I hope they get Eve next.... sounds like they might. I heard Shady may sign Pharoah Monch. That'd be sumpin else hah?

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah its really good, but dude, stop fucking namedropping so much already!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

it's meta-rap and it's still great

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 24 January 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

meta-rap?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 January 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

he's fighting serious battles on the authenticity front fwiw (his unreconstructed gangsta image I don't want a part of anyway) and his (losing) battle rap getting back @ Joe Buddens(who ate him up) set new records for tedium. basically, fuck this dude. I'm all ears though.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 24 January 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The beats are great but dude is a boring rapper.

deej., Monday, 24 January 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

meta-rap in that he only raps about hip-hop, namechecking who he's repping, who he loves, etc. there's no substance here beyond hip-hop itself. it's maybe the most self-conscious album (from rhymes to beats) i have ever heard.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 24 January 2005 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously it gets so bad there's one song where the chorus is like nothing but him naming classic hip-hop albums (Death Certificate, Doggystyle, All Eyez on Me, etc.)

I find it ironic that hes out to save west coast rap, yet most of what Ive heard sounds like generic g-unit fodder. Im not saying we should resurrect and rehash all the hits of the 90s, but putting a new twist on it would have been nice.

Juan, the Magic Don (jingleberries), Monday, 24 January 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 24 January 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get all the 'meta-rap' discussion of this album, every rapper references other rappers, other records, the industry, how they're going to fit into the lineage of legends/classics, etc. I'd be surprised if he does that significantly more than the average rapper. remember that stupid Em verse on Get Rich where he compares 50 to every famous dead rapper?

I'm curious to see what the numbers on this album will turn out to be later this week, if all the hype will be a self-fulfilling prophecy. because a lot of people seem to like the album, but does anyone actually think he's a hot rapper? dude is boring even by G-Unit standards. and unlike Buck and Lloyd, he gets totally outshined by 50 on his single, which isn't that big of a hit (yet) anyway, compared to "In Da Club" or even "On Fire". I'm just gonna take the couple tracks I think are hot ("Hate It Or Love It" and "No More Fun And Games") and walk away.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

well of course everyone wants to place themselves in a context of other rhymers, etc., al, but the thing with the game record is that there's nothing else to it! even when the track about the birth of his baby boy is told via dropping other song titles/lyrics and artists. he knows no other way to tell his life but via hip-hop. it's either the first elephant six hip-hop album or nick hornby's first joint. or both.

and yeah, he is totally dullsville as a rapper. no life to his voice, no timbre that separates him from the crowd. but the beats are hot and so are the guest spots, and the album coasts on that. i like the album. i think in a lot of ways it's an amazing distillation of where hip-hop is right now.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

poor Yayo, even Wacko Jacko got more shout-outs.

jonviachicago, Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, all this talk about "meta-rap" in this thread has aroused more interest for the album from me than anything else I've heard/read. It's funny because he actually does have a bio that reads a lot like 50 Cent's (going to jail, getting shot, etc.) so you'd think he had some real life experiences to relate, but instead you'd think he just spent his whole life inside listening to records. I'm gonna have to check this record out.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I read an interview with him months ago (Mass Appeal or Elemental, one of those design/hip-hop/etc. mags) and his backstory explains the meta-rap thing (if not making it more interesting). He was selling weed, his apartment gets robbed and he's shot several times and laid up forever, so he gets his brother to buy all the classic hip-hop albums he never paid much attention to and listens to them over and over to learn at the age of 19/20.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Al, I'm pretty sure his single is in the top ten.

Yeah that's "Dreams". I just heard it, and I think it's wack.
"How We Do" is ok, though.

bprofane (AaronHz), Friday, 28 January 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

When did he get the massive Eazy-E tat? After the robbery? How old is he now?

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Friday, 28 January 2005 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was just wondering about that today. The NWA one too. He have that shit before he met Dre? Either way it's kinda funny.

bprofane (AaronHz), Friday, 28 January 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

A lot of rap today is bubblegum bullshit that says nothing and means nothing to anybody living in the ‘hood,” says the 24-year-old with a tattoo of NWA’s Eazy-E on his right forearm. “I’m not knocking anybody’s hustle but I can’t feel what’s in hip-hop today. Everybody’s rapping but they’re not saying anything. NWA, Biggie, 2Pac, Snoop and Jay-Z all had something to say then Biggie, Pac and Eazy died and it was devastating. We almost let rap die until the Great White Hype (Eminem) saved hip-hop and 50 dropped the gangsta wake-up call. I feel like it’s my turn now and I can fill the shoes.”

bprofane (AaronHz), Friday, 28 January 2005 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

this guy is terrible

this album has three good songs (higher, put you on the game, church for thugs), the rest is just this guy listing off shit he likes and how BADLY he wants to make this a classic. how many classic albums have the artists foretelling the album's classicness?

he's also pretty monotonous vocally.

if this rates highly by year-end, i'll be completely confounded.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Friday, 28 January 2005 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha "snoop had something to say"!!!!!!!!!

The great thing about snoop records is that he never says ANYTHING - with that voice he doesn't have to...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 28 January 2005 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Al, I'm pretty sure his single is in the top ten.
-- djdee2005 (ddrak...), January 27th, 2005.

it is. but is it a hit on the scale of "In Da Club"? and don't you think the biggest new artist in hip hop shouldn't need a training wheels guest star on his lead single? 50 didn't need Em on a single to sell. Kanye didn't need Jay on a single to sell.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 28 January 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i keep coming back to "hate it or love it" but only for 50's verses.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i completely agree, djdee. i think that's gonna be the huge hit. and somehow it straddles dre and nas, or somesuch concoction. lazy but assertive. and so so hot.

i really love this record. a lot. all of the goofy shit with the game (especially that change of heart pic) just makes me like him more. his bona fides are so transparent, but he makes it anyway. it's charming!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i've listened to it a few times, and as much as it might be considered "meta" i think of it more in terms of nostalgia. but more on that later/elsewhere.

Total snoozefest.

greg ginn thought neubauten was bullshit, why don't you? (smile), Thursday, 10 February 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

that first 50 verse on love it or leave it is one of his best evah (even better than his one on Buck's "I'm a Soldier"). And when 50 says "my favorite rapper sang ch-check out my melody" , The Game should be taking notes on how to namedrop with class.

50 Cent Calls Game Disloyal, Kicks Him Out Of G-Unit
02.28.2005 10:22 PM EST

Rapper drops bombshell during Funkmaster Flex's radio show Monday.
Game and 50 Cent The G-Unit just got smaller. 50 Cent announced Monday night (February 28) that the Game has been excommunicated from the crew because he feels the Compton rapper isn't loyal.

On New York radio station Hot 97, 50 told DJ Funkmaster Flex he was
disappointed with comments Game made on the station Saturday night, when the West Coast MC revealed he would not be getting involved in the beefs 50 is stirring up with "Piggy Bank" (see "50 Cent's LP Pushed Up, Harsh 'Facts' Sound Like Disses On Leaked 'Piggy Bank'").

According to Flex, Game even said he was going to do a song with Nas. "He's gone," 50 scoffed. "He might as well make the record."

50 also said Game should stop saying "G-Unit." "He thinks he's doing me a favor when he says that."

During his conversation with Flex, 50 claimed Interscope was going to drop the Game until 50 stepped in and got involved with The Documentary. 50 also insisted that he's making more money off The Documentary than Game is, and that he wrote more choruses than he's credited for.

Believe it or not, Game was on Hot 97 earlier in the evening, talking to host Angie Martinez. When listeners called in to ask about his and 50's problems, Game simply said he was going to continue to make "good music." Two nights prior, Game had said on-air that he and 50 did not have to be friends as long as they worked toward that same common goal: making good music.

For weeks there'd been rumors of friction within the G-Unit camp, but they'd always downplayed or outright dismissed the talk, and they even held it together long enough to shoot a joint video for "Hate It or Love It," which debuted Monday on "TRL."

A rep for Interscope had no comment on the implosion.

50's interview seemed to end abruptly around 10 p.m., and it was later revealed that the reason was a shooting that occurred either at the station or just outside. An NYPD spokesperson said a male in his 20s from Los Angeles was shot at least one time in the left leg, but no further details were given.

According to sources on the scene, 50 and his crew, which included G-Unit members Tony Yayo, Olivia and Lloyd Banks, were not involved and were escorted out another entrance.

In February 2001, Lil' Kim was at the station when a shooting occurred outside, and she was later indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice for allegedly lying to police and failing to cooperate with their investigation (see "Lil' Kim Indicted For Lying About Hot 97 Shootout With Capone"). That case is currently in the jury-selection phase.

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i just had a long convo with a friend about this...totally could see it coming... 50 totally put the Game on G Unit as a favor to Dre, they were never tight...and now that everyone's heard The Massacre and says it's not as good as The Documentary, 50 knows he's in for a (relative) flop and he's desperate, trying to blacklist half the industry. dude's killing himself. Game was on 106 & Park today and they asked him about rumors and he just kinda shrugged and acted like he heard things but didn't know anything.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

also I have no doubts about 50's claim that he wrote more than he's credited for on The Documentary...it's painfully obvious that the "Church For Thugs" and "Put You On The Game" choruses are his.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

haha "relative" flop is right, seriously its like 50 did his best work on games album - "hate it or love it" is a good song bcuz of 50, so is the first single, and both are better than "candy shop" or "disco inferno."

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, totally, it's insane how big the discrepancy is between the quality of the Game/50 singles and the Massacre singles. and it's like he has no clue what actually sounds good to people.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 06:01 (twenty-one years ago)

50 and Nas have beef? Rap is way too complicated.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

50 had this stupid line on piggy bank about kelis.

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

someone should tell 50 to chill out

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Rappers are all like professional wrestlers now.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

it really is shocking how much better the Game's album is than the new 50, and I didn't really even LIKE the documentary.

one major problem - TOO MUCH 50! you are not Biggie or Pac or Eminem, you cannot carry an entire album virtually by yourself, out of 22 tracks maybe 6 are decent-to-great, with "Hate It or Love It" being the best of the bunch, of course after it was already on the documentary.

and what's with 50 putting Vivica Fox on blast? I wish she'd go Kill Bill on his dumb ass.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Documentary is about 90% marketing, 10% the Game himself. I've never really been a 50 Cent fan, but it really looks like Aftermath turned him out. Half of 50 Cent's promotion was based on his beefs and a couple Dre beats. Next, G-Unit feels a lot more like a marketing experiment than any sort of group. Finally they get 50 to write half of Game's album, then leave off half the credits. I really wonder if Eminem/Dre really ever planned on a long career for 50 Cent or if they're just using one best-selling artist to kick off another. The idea of a "new artist" is almost a sales cliche at this point.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

*coughpublicitystuntcough*

the timing of all this is just way too coincidental. i don't doubt that there's some beef between the two, but the timing of all these interviews and revelations seems pretty convenient.

jonviachicago, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

alright, disregard much of what i said. i hadn't read all that about the shooting when i said it. bullshit needs to end.

jonviachicago, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ten years pass...

Haha, I'm probably bumping the wrong thread but Game is killing it lately. Documentary 2 and 2.5 are really well constructed albums and, despite however odious his persona seems, he's become a great album artist. He's somehow worked his fanboy 'watch your toes' name drops into assured style exercises and relaxed collaborations.

The last time I checked for him was Doctor's Advocate (which was great, too) so I think I'll have to check in on the intervening years. I encourage all goons to check his latest 2.
