Your votes, pelase, for a "Best of 2004" DJ set I'm doing on NYE

I've been asked to play records somewhere really bloody trendy on NYE in London. I'm billed on the flyer as playing a "Best of 2004" set, and even though I never actually agreed to this, I'm happy to go along with it as most of my set is current anyway.

The venue is a pub/bar with a £10 cover charge and a 3.30am closing time; I can certainly play guitar-based stuff, but the plan is to keep it party music stylee since I'll probably be on for an hour-ish around 2am and everyone'll be ninged off their nong - so some hip-hop, r'n'b, pop etc will no doubt sneak in too.

Your thoughts, ILM? I have plenty of ideas, naturally, but I just want to make sure I don't miss out on anything essential!

i'd go through the 'rolling best singles of 2004' thread if i were you

then just put on my CD for a bit

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

So far, off the top of my head:

Polysics - My Sharona
Fans Of Kate - Tape 23
Basement Jaxx - Lucky Star
Madrugada - Blood Shot Adult Commitment
Dogs Die In Hot Cars - Celebrity Sanctum
Girls Aloud - The Game
The Black Keys - Summertime Blues
The Magic Numbers - Hymn For Her (final tune)

etc

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and Snoop Dogg - Drop It Like It's Hot

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Lucky Star was 2003 dude, Good Luck and Cish Cash would count tho i guess

Futureheads 'Hounds Of Love' and Streets remix
Daft Punk remix of Franz
er...Stellastar*?

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd go through the 'rolling best singles of 2004' thread if i were you

If you were me, sure. But i'm too lazy to sift out the dancefloor-friendly stuff. Jentina's a good call though, as is Annie obv.

Hounds Of Love is indeed in my sights, but I think their Streets remix, while entertaining once, is a bit "novelty". We'll see.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Annie of course.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't see what makes the Futureheads remix of FBYKI any more 'novelty' than the Kano/Donae/Lady Sov/etc. version...or even if it is why that's a problem

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

some vitalic maybe? since its a bar not a club the lamz0r middle track off 'fanfares' at +8 might be perfect.

:| (....), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, it's like hearing a comedy bootleg of "Parklife" or something - it's all terrible clever and amusing for about a minute, then you either want to hear the original or, more likely, something else entirely. Both artists involved - that is, The Streets and The Futureheads, dunno much about all those MCs - have better work.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For (Jacque Lu Cont remix)
Kelis - Trick Me (Basement Jaxx remix)
Trillville & Pastor Troy - Get Some Crunk In Yo System

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Def some Lady Sovereign. You could pick the Streets track that features her and, I think, Kano.

Also The Go Find, delicious Electronic Indie Pop.

Kelis: Millionaire

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoah, "Trick Me", shit! Yupyup. Where do I find the Jaxx mix and what does it sound like tho?

Will also play The Go! Team in some capacity, and The Walkmen's "The Rat".

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

you actually want the tiefschwarz mix of "trick me", not the bjaxx one. maybe coupled with the original tho, considering the two sound little alike.

m. (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the tiefchwarz mix is real nice, i've been listening to the jaxx one a lot though.

i'd upload it if i wasn't on 56k.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Armand Van Helden - Hear My Name
M.I.A - China Girl
Ada - Maps (this could either be really successful or really not depending on the type of place it is)

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, MIA, yes. If someone could email me the Tiefschwarz mix of "Trick Me", that'd be fab - do the necessary with my address, hey.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, Kano 'P's and Q's'

maybe 'Stand up tall' as well

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

back to back with 'The Show'

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Fave dancable rap tracks of the year:

Cee-Lo feat. Pharrell: "The Art of Noise"
Cee-Lo: "Glockapella"
The Alchemist feat. B-Real: "Bang Out"
The Alchemist feat. Stat Quo & M.O.P.: "Stop the Show"
The Alchemist feat. Mobb Deep: "It's a Craze"
Infinite Livez feat. Sir Ster: "Claati Bros"
Infinite Livez feat. Shadowless: "Tek Fi Joke"
Dead Prez feat. Jay-Z: "Hell Yeah (Pimp the System) [Remix]"

Nas. feat. Maxwell: "No One Else in the Room"

Hmm, seems like I haven't been buying much new rap this year. Anyway, you should especially check out the Cee-lo and the Alchemist tracks, they're all bangers.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

And obviously "Hot love"

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie, have I sent you any randoms lately? Plus-Teh would be right on here.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Covered In Punk - Portobella

Tell me more about this song/band please.

Barima, I've not been able to hear any of your kindly forwarded randoms as yet due to PC trouble - but thanks for sending 'em anyway!

So is it like some horrible George and Dragon type place where people dance to dire straits?

I'm *really* hoping it won't be - it's a pub/bar venue owned by J0n C4rt3r in Sh3ph3rd's Bu5h, not been there yet myself but have quite liked spending time in its C4md3n equivalent in the past.

Down with irony! Only playing songs I like, yo.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 30 December 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 30 December 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Try Get Up Stand Up for the Jacques remix of "What You Waiting For".

haitch™ (haitch), Thursday, 30 December 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

>> Covered In Punk - Portobella

> Tell me more about this song/band please.

From the recently-deceased Enthusiastic But Mediocre:

The reason why everyone is so keen to point out that Lucianna was in Crush with Donna Air is because Crush's Jellyhead is one of the best songs ever, and if you disagree, YOU ARE WRONG. It's that simple. Few people get to make two masterpieces in two separate halves of a career, so for god's sake people, stop hating and RECOGNISE that Covered In Punk is ludicrously catchy, pumping, pounding, incredibly fun to dance to AND suitable to be played extremely loudly in car. Of course, that means it crashed out of the charts and unlike Jellyhead didn't get a stomping Motiv8 remix that at least made it a minor hit overseas.

And how about Lethal Buzzle - "Pow! (Forward)"? It makes people riot, donchaknow?

Acme (acme), Thursday, 30 December 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, quick straw poll.

If, hypothetically, I were to choose one song from the list outlined above, and print out the lyrics in 72-point Bookman - one line per side of A4 - so I could hold the sheets up one by one as the singer sang them on the night, which song should I pick?

Right now, I'm leaning towards "The Rat".

(NB. I've done this before, with The Flaming Lips' "The Gash", so I know it can be quite effective!)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 31 December 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Filthy/Gorgeous

Alba (Alba), Friday, 31 December 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

d'you think enough people know it well enough though? i mean, if i was gonna go down the scissusissus route, I'm thinking "Laura" would be better.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 31 December 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say "Sad Ass Strippa" but it's not there, either "What You Waiting For?" or "Some Girls".

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 31 December 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a Sad Ass Strippa and a Bad Ass Strippa?

My initial thought was Jentina, just for the St Tropez/Burberry line, but I doubt enough people know it if you want a crowdpleaser. Also, it's a bit too specific a lyric, no?

Charlie - everyone knows the Scissor Sisters album. Surely it's better known than 'The Rat' at least (this assumption is possibly based on my never having heard anything by the Walkmen).

Alba (Alba), Friday, 31 December 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

My second choice would be 'Some Girls'.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 31 December 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba - Bad Ass Strippa is the entina original, Sad Ass Strippa is the Lady Sov diss

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 31 December 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

if things get desperate try mixing 'Float On' into 'Take Me Out'

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Friday, 31 December 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha - I only know the Lady Sov dis. Somehow Jentina herself completely escaped my attention. Then my brain got messed up when typing the above post and I typed Jentina instead of Lady Sovereign. As you were.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 31 December 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"Some Girls" also crossed my mind, but it's quite hard to sing, being high up the register.

Good point re: Scissusissssuz, might go for it.

Woo! Ta folks.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 31 December 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could come.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 31 December 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

bte. I can send you the Gwen Stefani if you still need it, but not till about 6.30 this evening.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 31 December 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks alba - bought the album yesterday tho, and found the LRD remix online. woop!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 31 December 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie, 'Some Girls'!

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 31 December 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)
