Pazz & Jop 2004 Disambiguation Thread

Looking through the PJ04 ballot thread (and also previous years' results), one notices that confusion occasionally arises due to slightly different names for the same thing, or possibly the same name for different things. This is the thread where pedants such as I may ask questions regarding the identity of records, or recommend a proper way to deal with the same. (I have nothing to do with this poll thing, I just like tidiness when it comes to lists, heh.)

1.
STOP WITH YOUR PTANS voted for
LCD Soundsystem - "Yeah (Stupid Version)" - DFA
Rollie Pemberton voted for
LCD Soundsystem - "Yeah (Crass Version)" - DFA
Are these the same one, seeing that both seem to be backed with "Pretentious" versions?

2.
STOP WITH YOUR PTANS voted for
Annie - "Heartbeat" - 679
Tim Finney may vote for
Annie - My Heartbeat
Has it been established what the correct title is here? I notice that AMG and CDDB have registered different titles, too.

3.
Raymond Cummings voted for
The Fall - "Sparta #2" - Narnack
What exactly is this? At CDDB, there are two different listings for The Real New Fall LP, and in one, "Sparta #2" seems to occupy the place that "Theme from Sparta F.C." has in the other. Are they the same track?

I asked about "Heartbeat" vs. "My Heartbeat" on another thread, and no one answered me!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the thread title as "Pazz & Jop 2004 Exsanguination Thread."

Anyway...is it Cecile, Ce'cile or Ce'Cile? (And don't get me started about the proper names of record labels.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Record labels haha yes. Indie fundamentalist: "No, I voted for Tabla Echo's self-released album, not the Sony release, although identical!"

OleM (OleM), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Another question. If I wanted to throw some love Yoko Ono's way in P&J, would I vote for the catchall "Everyman ... Everywoman"? Or would I choose between "Every Man Has a Man Who Loves Him" and "Every Woman Has a Woman Who Loves Her"? And would I have to choose one particular remix out of the many that are out there?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

she spells it Ce'Cile, so that's what i go with. it's pretty changeable and never, ever go with jamaican 7s as spelling reference!

on the album, it's called "My Heartbeat."

(and anyone who doesn't vote for it is disambiguously wrong!)

The LCD Soundsystem question is kinda moot in my case since I filed a last-minute request to switch my vote to "Casual Friday".

What's this place, Biblevania? (natepatrin), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm worse: I filed a request to switch my vote, then rescinded that request!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm telling ya, I still like "Chewing Gum" more...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm coming around to the charms of "Chewing Gum" -- at first, I thought "Heartbeat" was clearly the better single, but now I find myself singing the former to myself quite often.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

on the album, it's called "My Heartbeat."

and, to muddy the waters again, the promo 10´´ and 12´´ from 679 both list it as "heartbeat"

ain't nothing wrong with that one either! and ain't nothing wrong with reserving two spots for annie on your singles ballot this year.

Does the Nick Cave & Bad Seeds double album count as one album or two? (I need a serious answer, please.)

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

and ain't nothing wrong with reserving two spots for annie on your singles ballot this year.

I might just, at that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually (if Chuck's around), I would like to know what happens in cases like "Yeah" (which is exactly how I listed it on my ballot, hoping to lend support to whatever listing charted). How does P&J treat songs & remixes when the vote is clearly going to be split?

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck's not around, but fwiw, i put the annie single as "Heartbeat" into the P&J database (we make a huge database of 2004 albums and 2004 singles, just to streamline spellings and track titles and label names etc as the votes come in). all the "My Hearbeat" votes will just funnel into "Heartbeat". all the LCD stuff will funnel into simply "Yeah" (regardless of stupid/crass/pretentious).

which sort of answers dom's question. just the way the database is set up, it looks like we will funnel remix votes into the original single votes. chuck and bob will make all these decisions case-by-case though. you know how poobahs are.

Nick Sylvester, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

jeanne,

in the database i entered the nick cave double-album as one album.

Nick Sylvester, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I should clarify. It's not like the database corrects your ballot upon entry. we streamline spellings etc against the database after votes are in.

Nick Sylvester, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i've had all this annie shit on my computer for months now, but i've only heard 'heartbeat' once or something. maybe i should actually give it a spin or something.

HEY NICK WHAT'S UP you owe me an email but you're probably busy with this shit. hit me up, homie

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

was the nick cave album for SALE as two individual albums? if not, it's one album, though if somebody votes for just half of it (as a couple people did with outkast's last one), we'll accordingly deal with it, asterisk wise, and if it were to finish, we'd probably say* * - includes 5 points for abbatoir blues alone, or whatever it's called. (oddly, the magnetic fields album that almost won a few years ago was almost always ONLY available as three different albums, i think, but since everybody voted for 69 Love Songs as one album not 3 we counted it as 1.) As for "Yeah," I assume we'd asterisk the remixes of that one as part of the complete vote, too -- this happened with "get low" last year, and maybe a clipse or rapture single or two in the past couple years, so it's hardly unprecedented.

in other news, i am still on vacation. hi nick!
