Snakeless Voivod

Question being: is it any good? Sampling a few tunes from the early Voivod (War and Pain, Roar, Killing Technology), and sampling a few demos from Voivod.net (great site), I think it is not to far off from the earlier noise. It still sounds Voivod-like thanks to that cold steel guitar, but there is probably more bass.

This is really all I've heard of the new-old Voivod powertrio version. It sounds to me like some of that 90s stoner rock stuff mixed with some thrash. Is it as good as Acid Bath or Melvins?

What about that Kronik album full of remixes? Computers and Voivod go together like ham and swiss, but maybe a remix is the wrong kind of computer relationship? I don't know, you tell me.

Who's playing bass now? Is it still Jason?

that era is kind of hit & miss - there's definitely some good tracks in there, but I never thought any of the albums were all that hot as a whole. live, the power trio thing actually worked pretty well. even though Eric fucked his back up and couldn't move much on stage, his voice sounded great on all the material both new and old.

Alex, yes apparently Voivod will release a new album sometime in 2005 with the same line-up as last time. I don't really get why some people didn't take to the last album with Newstead. It sounded just like their classic era stuff to me, and that is exactly what I'd hoped for. Actually, I hoped for a little more psychedelia, but what I got was a harder Angel Rat and that's cool with me. Angel Rat was an album that people didn't seem to like much either and I can't figure that one out.

Avi, would you say Phobos or Negatron is the better album?

Triple Ho, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, I'd maybe say Negatron, but it's really been awhile since I've heard either.

fwiw, I'm a big fan of Angel Rat. I hated it when it first came out, but decided to revisit it a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised.

Angel Rat is a pretty psychedelic little rocker. I'll never forget the first time listening to Angel Rat blowing out potsmoke during an LSD trip to the lyrics "it's full of clouds in my house" which seemed like an awesome coincindence.

Outer Limits is very good also. I think Dimension Hatross through Outer Limits were 4 equally cool albums.

Is it just me or does Voivod actually sound "cold"? Maybe that's why tripping to it seemed so great during the winter in the frozen tundra up north.

Hmmm, well everyone else online seems to be saying Phobos is better than Negatron, so I went with Phobos. We'll see. The comparison is generally Negatron = Killing Technology or earlier and Phobos = Dimension Hatross.

Listening to Phobos now. Currently on the 5th song and WOW this is way cool! This sounds very Voivod but doomy slow like Sabbath or something. I love this! All these years I'd avoided it like the plague just because it wasn't the same band.
