"Run To The Sun"! hurrah! (I think I've heard some of the others, but I can't place a tune to any of 'em.)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my own commentary...john cale - a child's christmas in wales: for the time of year. but fading fast, i suppose. off paris 1919. n.e.r.d. - run to the sun: obsessed with this for a while now...the best thing the neptunes have ever done? black sabbath - war pigs: like most sabbath songs, i think it kinda speaks for itself. wire - outdoor miner: it's so oddly...tender. especially considering what bookends it. al green - let's stay together: if i could be one human, i would be al green. the dead c - sky: the trapdoor fucking exit version. eno - by this river: one of the saddest songs i know, for reasons i can't adequately explain. faust - krautrock: the bbc sessions version which sounds cleaner - and maybe better - to these ears than the one on iv. james brown - bewildered: off sex machine the live disc...gives me chills at how a 31 yr old cd transfer can still crackle with the sort of raw sexuality the man must have been able to call up in his prime. new order - crystal: if the rest of the album had been this good... the specials - stupid marriage: novelty records you can dance to = infinitely better than the other kind. cabaret voltaire - nag, nag, nag: the "where's yr head at?" of 1979? mri - as a child i could fly without wings: click-soul? bubba sparxxx - twerk a little: utterly vile and utterly infectuous. the human league - all i ever wanted: the best kind of comeback record...you know, good.

I think the "masses/masses" rhyme that opens "War Pigs" disqualifies it from perfection if only just. "Paranoid" seems more perfect to me.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, sundar, i was actually bothered by that tonite too in the car. jesus ozzy, work a little man. however, as a protest song, it whups everyone louder than everyone else.

jess, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

note also that - with few exceptions - i'm not proposing these as ethan's 15 "perfect" songs. like tim's they're just 15 i've been listening to and obsessing over.

jess, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i need someone else to confirm this of course but my list seems to be the only interesting one.

ethan, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

You're wearing your mirrorshades backwards.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ethan, an interesting idea, but i'll think you'll find that my list was better. (*sticks tongue out*)

gareth, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations, Ethan! I didn't think a human head could actually fit inside of an asshole!

Clarke B., Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad someone else is prepared to acknowledge the utter utter brilliance of "Twerk A Little" - perhaps the most infectious groove of the year (although you're right that it's also perhaps the vilest - battling it out with "Oochie Wally" I think). Meanwhile I have to hear that MRI track.

This list brings up something I wanted to say though about the list phenomenon generally: I'm probably not going to do a best- of list for the blog, if only because the very idea exhausts me, but I love tossed-off, irreverant lists like these, and could read them until the cows come home - the more irreverant the better. Of course, if it becomes a CorD/S&D situation where they're the only thing on ILM, there might be cause for concern...

Tim, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, tim, i was driving around on saturday and playing "twerk" at least 8 times in a row. tim's fucked up non-flow makes it just as exciting as the rhythm itself. the way he speed- slurs "inyrdaughtersguts/or just spazzinout." nancy and i both agree (although i forget which song its in), bubba's line "although i may "love" them/i dont really like women" is the most vile of the year, perhaps the most blatant misogyny in any hiphop song we've ever heard, BUT almost respectable for being so upfront.

jess, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that's "tim's flow" as in timbaland of course. (although we all know finney's flow is just as fucked up.)

(ooooh, burn.)

jess, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim could kick all our asses! And Mr. Finney is devilishly attractive too, the bastard. *seethes hate at Tim and strangles him out of disaffected jealousy* Wait, that's mean of me.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess - yeah that love/like distinction is almost a bit too self- knowing, almost as if it was a spoof of rap misogyny rather than the real thing (unfortunately I doubt that). There's a couple of songs on Dark Days, Bright Nights which really seem to be aiming to break records in the nastiness stakes. The scat references in "Regardless" come to mind - although again what's strange is how often the most misogynist songs have the most awesome grooves.

Ned - um, thank you? (presses security button under desk).
