if everyone was a music nerd...

how would life differ? for instance, if you were in the car with your buddy and his offspring record started to skip on the cd player, you could quip "oh, you got the screwed and chopped?" and it would be vaguely acceptable once.

(i'm, well... stoned)(if in the morning this thread requires justification)

"I didn't know Oval remixed The Offspring!"

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 30 December 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"Dude I thought Offspring was banned by the government! Where'd you get that?"

I should hope that in such a world we would all have a tighter grasp of the subjunctive mood.

"Dude I thought Offspring was banned by the government! Where'd you get that?

Alternately:

"Dude, is that the new Autechre???!!!"

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Friday, 31 December 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to try to make the Kid 606 variation of that joke even though everyone is not a music nerd. I don't know why I bothered

W i l l (common_person), Friday, 31 December 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

haibun: perhaps i mean, if *most* people were music nerds. still, i feel this thread has been limited by my lone hypothetical example.

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 31 December 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

If everyone was a music nerd...we'd all be out getting laid.

stew, Friday, 31 December 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, if everyone was a music nerd... then no one would be a music nerd. Think about it.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 31 December 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

If everyone was a music nerd, rare records would cost ten times what they do now.

vs.

There would probably be more orgies if everyone was a music nerd.

THE HERBALISER
Same as It Never Was (!K7)
Downtempo vets go live, get funky

Mid-'90s downtempo stalwarts The Herbaliser are back with a new, funkier sound. London's Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba have gone the way of Mark Ronson and recruited a live band for their new release, which seems largely inspired by old-school funk. A major highlight is Jessica Darling, the new young singer who lends soulful vocals to five tracks, including the jazzy 007-esque “Stranded on Earth.” The album also features a few instrumentals and some guest rappers, including Jean Grae. Same as It Never Was isn't a musical revolution, but it is a funky good time. — Dustin Glick

J-LIVE
Then What Happened? (BBE)
Underrated MC keeps it coming

J-Live completely kills it on his new album. J-Live is a NY-bred MC/DJ/producer who has been in the game for more than a decade, garnering plenty of underground props but less commercial success. But if this album doesn't go gold, then either there's not a drop of good taste left in hip-hop fans or there's too much downloading going on. Tracks like “It Don't Stop,” “We Are!” and “The Upgrade” should be mandatory listens for all hip-hop heads this year. Throw in guest stars such as DJ Spinna, Jazzy Jeff, DJ Nu-Mark, Posdnuos and Chali 2na, and you've got yourself a winner. — Dustin Glick

The Outside (Mush)
Gritty analog funkster hits the mark

With his latest album, The Outside, Eliot Lipp brings 12 tracks of beat-fueled, modern trip-hop that make a perfect soundtrack for the city streets. Lipp's analog synth-based sound mixes the urban vibes of DJ Shadow with the glitch-hop stylings of Dabrye and Prefuse 73, adding just a tinge of '80s. His sound isn't strikingly original at first listen, but there is something unique there that keeps evolving with each release. Album highlights are in tracks like “Beyond the City” and “The Area,” which offer up heavy doses of gritty electro-funk that are bound to get heads nodding. — Dustin Glick

HOT CHIP

DJ Kicks (!K7)
Zany upbeat DJ magic
UK dance act Hot Chip has earned a well-deserved reputation of fun-loving groove kings, and their contribution to the popular DJ Kicks series will only serve to further that image. With what is surely the only mix to ever contain songs from both Positive K (“I Got a Man”) and Ray Charles (“Mess Around”), Hot Chip has put together an eclectic mix of music that is guaranteed to make you move. If you're not already a believer in Hot Chip's technical abilities and musical knowledge, just wait until you hear them blend consecutive tracks by New Order, Young Leek and Etta James. Weird? Yes. Fun? Definitely. — Dustin Glick

On first look, Hot Chip's DJ-Kicks has the look of forced diversity, like a record geek (or five) trying to prove a point that isn't exactly crying out to be made: Hey, look, guys, New Order and Young Leek and Tom Zé and Audion and Ray Charles, all in one mix!
