DVD-R/DVD+R .... Ready to Toss Out Your MP3 CDrs?

For xmas I got a DVD burner for my computer, and I'm in heaven, I just backed up 6 cds worth of mp3s and audio files to one DVD+R, and this is just on a single-sided one (4.7GB of data). The question is...

...has anyone had any problems with the burnable DVDs? I'm saving the CDr originals of all the discs but i am planning on ditching them all (ugh, mountains and mountains....it's disgusting) for DVDs.

I'm getting double-sided ones sometime but right now I'm using what i got at Christmas, which is Phiiliips double-sided DVD+R. The warning at the bottom says, "Write only with special marker," which is a wonderful and whimsical thing to say. I've been using my black Sharpie, which I think is pretty special.

Why not just buy one of these huge hard drives? 400GB? Just fill it up and set it aside.

hard drives can corrupt for unknown reasons. Also, if you accidentally drop them.. CDRs and DVD-Rs are less likely to do that when stored somewhere, or dropped.

Also, hard drives are (currently) more of a pain to connect and disconnect, even if they're as simple as SCSI... whereas you can just throw in a DVD-R or CD-R and then simply eject it.

Hard drives are so cheap now, I'm using one to keep near my computer (Firewire, easy) and another as a backup to keep safe. But then I tend to lose CDs, so it makes sense for me.

Also, I have a CD player that reads MP3 CDs, and I'm sure it won't be long until versions that read DVDs will appear.

fuck discs

I would really like a definitive answer to the special marker question. We don't have 'sharpies' in Britain.

the geex0rs that run the computer lab at university refuse to label their cds/dvds with ANY markers, special or no

Fuck Discs?

I thought the future was Blu-Ray.

I got a burner and some DVDs for Christmas also. The DVDs came with a marker, which I thought was odd, but I haven't given it a close look yet.

Only thing is, some CD players won't read your DVD. Had this problem a few times.

For CD-Rs, if it doesn't say "xylene free" on the pen, it's probably not a good idea to use. Dunno about DVD, but feel free to imagine the same applies.

Yeah, it's kindof interesting the way Sharpies have now been elevated to some kind of sainthood considering they used to be the most ordinary of objects.

i have a 512 ram ,running xp but vd shrink takes 90 minutes to shrink 90 minute dvd then 1 hour to burn a dvd , why is it so slow ?

helpmeboy, Saturday, 1 January 2005 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no desire to download mp3s ,burn dvds , copy cdrs anymore - i have atape walkman that plays nearly 5 songs or 15 minutes on 1 side then i turn it over.

Not enough capacity, I'm up to 200 DVD-Rs of burned stuff now.

I just did the exact same thing and am getting ready to back up my hard drive on dvd's.
I love the future.

I actually did get a big harddrive recently, but only cos I had to, my other one that i got earlier this year was crapping out on me. Hard drives seem to go to shit after a year or so of use for me, unlike discs. I still have some CDrs I burned 6 or 7 years ago that read fine!

But how much did all of those cost!!?? I'm thinking you could buy multiple redundant hard drives and fill them up much more easily (I do know you've been doing this for quite a while though!).

200GB Hard drives are hovering around $100 USD on pricewatch.
