I'm a huge fan of the Dream Babes brit-girl comps & Velvet Tinmine (both compiled, at least in part, by St Etienne's Bob Stanley) so I'm very curious about these two recent st etienne-cherrypicked compilations:

trip

songs for mario's cafe
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00025OI3S/026-1486158-6410041

but they are extremely expensive here in the New World so i'm hesitant... anyone heard them?

oh damn i couldve posted this here, i suppose: Saint Etienne - The Trip

The Trip is great, particularly the first CD; utterly sublime mix of 70s disco-soundtracks-soul etc.

Tom May (Tom May), Friday, 31 December 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i love the trip

Another vote for The Trip. I have 'em both, and there's some great stuff on the Mario's Cafe one, but if feels more like a (semi-) haphazard collection of songs. The Trip is better curated. And disc two ain't bad either.

haven't heard either but mario's cafe has that great tammy st. john track.

Fritz, I bought my copy of The Trip from Buy.com, which has it for only $19.98, here. And, as everyone has mentioned, it's excellent.

Anyone go to the Ets' NYE gig at Shepherds Bush Empire ? Bloomin' marvellous it was. Complete with a segue into the Countdown theme a minute before midnight (a nice nod to "Foxbase Alpha" too).

SO WONDERFUL. I like Mario's Cafe beter, but that's because it's easier to get a handle on and I've had more time with it. Both are easily my most-listened-to albums of the year. The Trip's first disc is all funk and disco detritus, while the 2nd disc is lovely and eerie folk/pop/AM-chorus. The Trip is definitely more carefully sequenced and mixed, but that's ok, as Mario's Cafe then sounds like a radio station rather than a club.

that Tammy St. John song is incredible; who was she?

btw, I would love to find the Dreambabes compilations now. Are they avaliable anywhere?

I was able to find the Trip for $23 CAD and Mario's Cafe for the steeper $32, both on import.

basically just an also-ran who made some singles for pye records that never really got any attention until the flood of '60s compilations over the past 10-15 years. i have no idea if she's still alive.

i have the girls go zonk one (covering US artists) -- a total winner, especially for the murmaids' version of traffic's "paper sun."

thanks jody.

i really like the Ruth Copeland song too; is she laughing? crying? having an orgasm? who's to say!

A friend pointed me last night to Jeff Britton's "Rub Out" from The Trip -- ace stuff...

darren, i loved the nye party, particularly the build up to midnight. sarah seemed a little nervous, stepping in and out of a fixed spotlight and walking off stage when her parts were over. it drew attention to their songwriting. annoying I noticed how often they'd start songs with a cracking euro-beat then segue into the live band. I supposed it adds to the performance

four years pass...

New comp - a belated sequel of sorts to Songs for Mario's Cafe, out on Monday!

Can't wait, though it's sad that just as Mario's Cafe was a requiem for all the disappeared greasy spoons, this one might be a farewell to the traditional London boozer.

ah 'Smoke Rings' on it, that's the only one on the tracklist i know

modescalator (blueski), Thursday, 29 October 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

Mmm, that one and 'Driver's Seat' and the Zombies track are the only cuts I'm familiar with. Those are all great, however, so I have high hopes for the rest.
