JD from CDepot, Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

wider age range with dylan, more to talk about

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

happy new year ILM!

I don't know much about Dylan fanatics but I imagine they are into bootlegs and minutiae, Morrissey fanatics seem the obsessive bedsitting types. Dylan fanatics over for dinner, Morrissey fanatics out for drinks. I dunno.

gspm (gspm), Saturday, 1 January 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

the only Dylan fanatic I have known was a bearded recluse who lived in his parents' guest house. The only Morrissey fanatic I've known was an extremely hot girl that I made out with a couple of times.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 1 January 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I have not met ONE female Dylan Fanatic (as in: has all the bootlegs and has memorized all the lyrics, etc).

So Moz fans win.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Saturday, 1 January 2005 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I once knew somebody who used to listen to Smiths' songs backwards for secret messages.

I've never known a Bob Dylan fanatic.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 1 January 2005 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I know Dylan fanatics. They are everywhere in America.

Vote Smiths

Atnevon (Atnevon), Saturday, 1 January 2005 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Dylan. Better music, wider range.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 1 January 2005 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but Moz is the better singer, pound for pound.

JD from CDepot, Saturday, 1 January 2005 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

how do you know how much they weigh?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 1 January 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I try to avoid both.

Andy Hart (AndyHart), Saturday, 1 January 2005 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Right now: Dylan fanatics. Dylan fans are probably raving about the kickass autobiography right now, which I can totally get with, while Morrisey fans just have "Morrisey, You Are The Quarry" to talk about and anyone trying to defend *that* particular album is bounf to hurt me in my head. Mind you, ask me again when mozzer releases his collected letters.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 1 January 2005 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Bob beats Steve by being able to sing both slow AND fast, for a kickoff.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Saturday, 1 January 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Fanatics are all the same. They should all be put in concentration camps.

RS LaRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 1 January 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I have no Dylan in the apartment but I do have every Smiths album and Morrissey album and single, and I like to think I approve of myself, so Morrissey fanatics obviously.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 January 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ, the only Morrissey fanatics I've known were back in college. I've got Dylan fanatics all around me, of every age and every walk of life. The last time I caught Dylan, there were 20-something girls dancing in front of the stage -- a sight to behold, bizarre as it first seemed.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Saturday, 1 January 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So Dylan, obv.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Saturday, 1 January 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't seen any dylan fanatics crying because bob cancelled a show. anyway i agree with RS Larue, all fanatics should be interned.

joan vich (joan vich), Saturday, 1 January 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I once knew somebody who used to listen to Smiths' songs backwards for secret messages.
i did that i heard:we hate the soho covre and the tatu cover but crowded house did a good cover .

shoplifter united club, Saturday, 1 January 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The dangers of fanaticism

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 1 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Dylan fanatics: Volvo-driving middle-aged straight white guys
Morrissey fanatics: pan-sexual, multicultural, suicidal folks of mixed gender

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 1 January 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

It's easier to spot Morrissey fanatics.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 January 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

that link is fucking ridiculous. "The Diana-Morrissey Connection"?

and what does pan-sexual mean?

JD from CDepot, Saturday, 1 January 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

gay, straight, un-, and every combination of the above

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 1 January 2005 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's easier to spot Morrissey fanatics.

What type of fanatic would you say I look more like, though? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 January 2005 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Well yeah, but you'd need a little goatee and some wire frames to complete the Dylanite look, Ned.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Sunday, 2 January 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm listening to Blonde on Blonde and I really like it. Can someone recommend an order for listening to Dylan's albums? Thank you.

not yet a fanatic, Sunday, 2 January 2005 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Morrissey fans stalk their idol with a fanaticism approximating love. They just want to give the guy a hug and be hugged back. Dylan fanatics stalk him with something close to devotion, in the religious sense. Reading Dylan's book, he really seems creeped out and peeved by - and scared of - those who consider him some sort of prophet or messiah. Morrissey, on the other hand, probably welcomes such comparisons, and were they not offered he'd probably proffer them himself.

Oh, also, Dylan fans are indeed into bootlegs and minutia. But Morrissey fans are the trainspotting sort who collect multiple editions of albums, rare singles, and other tangeable but hard-to-find stuff, then wait outside the show to get the drummer to sign them.

"Blonde on Blonde" is as good a start as any, but I might go with "Highway 61 Revisted" next, or perhaps "Bringing It All Back Home."

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 2 January 2005 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

out of the ones I know well, I'd go in this order:
Blonde on Blonde
Bringing it All Back Home
Highway 61 Revisited
The Freewheelin Bob Dylan
Another Side of Bob Dylan
Times They Are A Changin'
Blood On The Tracks
Basement Tapes
Love and Theft

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Sunday, 2 January 2005 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a hanging in turkey
two necks fr the noose
one's a Mozist
the other's a Dylanist
what the fuck
fanatics

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 January 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but Moz is the better singer, pound for pound.

pardon me while I pick myself up off the ground. thanks.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 2 January 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

*whistles idly*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 January 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, its true. i don't necessarily mean more emotive, or more appropriate.

JD from CDepot, Sunday, 2 January 2005 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Or better?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 2 January 2005 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

or "singer"?

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Sunday, 2 January 2005 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

morrissey could sing a wide range of songs than dylan good and still sound somewhat appropriate.

maybe this is what i mean.

JD from CDepot, Sunday, 2 January 2005 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

*wider

JD from CDepot, Sunday, 2 January 2005 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry--I'm not trying to make this personal. my argument is that Dylan is a far better phraser and Moz just seems catch-as-catch-can with that aspect of it. neither have especially "good" voices, obv.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 2 January 2005 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the world really demands that we decide which is the better singer, morrissey or bob dylan. and quick.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 2 January 2005 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

no, i think the world needs more posts to ILM, this most vital and life affirming of internet forums

JD from CDepot, Sunday, 2 January 2005 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Dylan albums in order, partly-knowing/partly-guessing:

first cut - the great albums, in chron order
The Freewheelin Bob Dylan - folk, smart
Bringing it All Back Home - rock, cock-eyed
Highway 61 Revisited - garage, motoring
Blonde on Blonde - carnival, veiled
The Basement Tapes - mystery, riverboat
Nashville Skyline - country, generous
Before the Flood (live with the Band) - proto-punk, confrontational
Blood on the Tracks - singer-songwriter, epistolary
Love and Theft - American music, testament

second cut - other good or great albums, in chron order
Bob Dylan
The Times They Are A Changin'
Another Side of Bob Dylan
Live 66
John Wesley Harding (some would say it belongs on the first list)
New Morning
Planet Waves
Greatest Hits, Vol. 3
Empire Burlesque
Under the Red Sky
Good As I Been To You
World Gone Wrong
Time Out of Mind

you can also stick The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3, in anywhere there or at the end

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 January 2005 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and you don't need Desire, but you should hear "Isis" from it

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 January 2005 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

if you want to cut things even further (for quicker breadth, but not greater quality, necessarily), start with Freewheelin -> either Bringing It or Highway -> Blood -> Love and Theft.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 January 2005 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, I might add Greatest Hits Vol. 2 to the first cut, or as a replacement for Nashville Skyline

and if you were to divide the second tier in 2, the first might go
The Times They Are A Changin'
Another Side of Bob Dylan
John Wesley Harding
Greatest Hits, Vol. 3
World Gone Wrong
Time Out of Mind

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 January 2005 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

gabbneb do you have a beard, by any chance?

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Sunday, 2 January 2005 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i am the least beard-ish individual you could hope to meet

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 January 2005 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

also, i've heard about half these albums

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 January 2005 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

wait a sec...

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Sunday, 2 January 2005 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i fucking hate moz fanatics.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Sunday, 2 January 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

:-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 January 2005 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.globalhermit.com/ilx/neddissey.jpg

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 2 January 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Dylan's been a better singer. Maybe not these days with his blown-out voice, but he's certainly more expressive. Morrissey doesn't seem to be able to capture a wide range of moods like Dylan.

shookout (shookout), Sunday, 2 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I look so happy!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 January 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Why compare two very different crowds? And why compare Morrissey to a mere mortal?

obvious!, Monday, 3 January 2005 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

hey JD why don't you fuck off then

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 3 January 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah it's just I adore Morrissey but he's about as good a singer as Mark E. Smith

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 3 January 2005 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you for the recommendations.

youn, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ummm No.

And why are you telling me to fuck off?

JD from CDepot, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Cos I love you but I'm too shy to say

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 3 January 2005 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, im celibate.

JD from CDepot, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 3 January 2005 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but for me, its by CHOICE.

JD from CDepot, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

god i love the exchange on this thread between Matos -- very good listener -- and raggetttt -- horrible listener.

beautiful stuff.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 3 January 2005 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, yeah -- my two cents on Dylan intro prolly goes:

1. Highway 61 . of course.
2. Basement tapes --- official 1975 columbia version

i swear to god

i love that official columbia version

with all the later Band tracks and shit,. "I a hard time waking this morning..."" ORANGE JUICE BLUES !!!!

ARE YOU kdding me? of course i love '75 'Tapes'. Gotta have those later Band tracks. Odds and ends, odds and ends -----lost time is not founf agaiN!!!!!

3. Bringing IT
4. new Mronign ===== SHIT. NEW MORNIGN IS SO GOOD. this is seriostly the lost Dylan classic. No doubt.

5. LIVE 1966. Bootleg series 4 or whatever it's called. GUITARS KISSING AND THE CONTEMPORARY FIX.

haha

my fellow dylanophiles ... big up ya chest. what is it those pathetic whitey hip-hop fucknuts say? i think it's big up ya chest. something like that abyway.

but yeah.

Dylan pretty much takes a HUGE dump on some pathetic english puke, that's for damn sure.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 3 January 2005 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

god i love the exchange on this thread between Matos -- very good listener -- and raggetttt -- horrible listener.

I'm a wonderful listener! And yay me for it. Matos is equally wonderful, and thus yay for him. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 January 2005 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Stormy, I'm with you on the Basement Tapes, which is actually my very favorite Dylan album (Blonde on Blonde being a very close 2nd).

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My roommate is BOTH, and it's TERRIFYING.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone else read the first volume of Dylan's autobiography? Curiously, the only recording sessions he dedicates any time to are those for "New Morning" and "Oh Mercy." Daniel Lanois loses his temper and smashes a mandolin!
