Crawling Chaos, The Gas Chair

...and the Wipers 3 CD box set and the Devo The Complete Truth DVD. Rah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 January 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Ahh, I'm absolutely adoring that Department S compilation. You'll love it, Ned. I picked up it up alongside DFA Compilation #2 on Monday (among other discs...Ian Crause, Y Pants, The Gun Club) and I'm enjoying that more and more with each listen.

I haven't bought anything yet, but I should be purchasing Catherine Wheel's Chrome when it comes in next week. I'll probably rush to Vinyl Fever as well next Friday and purchase the re-issues of The Gun Club's Death Party and The Las Vegas Story.

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 2 January 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

Damn, do I want that Wake compilation...actually, I want all those LTM/Boutique discs you mentioned... If I were to purchase one from there right now, though, it would either be The Passage or 23 Skidoo.

I picked up it up alongside
Up it up? That's interesting, Ian...sounds like a lost Liquid Liquid track.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Sunday, 2 January 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait, I should also be getting Fats Waller - 1926-1927 soon. Obviously I'm a bit too obsessed with Eraserhead lately.

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 3 January 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

today i went to the princeton record exchange. selection was kinda picked over (it's right after xmas -- what do you expect?) but i'm satisfied with what i got.

on cd:

va - thank god it's friday ost
liza minelli - results (produced by the pet shop boys)

on vinyl:

starcastle - fountains of light (no idea; i just bought this because the cover art looks almost exactly like jefferson starship's dragon fly. same guy?)

bernadette peters - s/t (1980; there's a cover of "chico's girl" on it!)

two albums by the shirts (the s/t one and street light shine)

the corner grocery store and other singable songs sung by raffi with ken whiteley (1979, from canada, and produced by "dan lanois")

original broadway cast - follies (early '70s sondheim)

v/a - roadie ost

disco gold #4: top tunes of today (all music by "dimensional sound") (this is still sealed in its original shrink wrap; i can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to open it!)

the men - "i don't depend on you" (more about which here)

up with people! - the '75/'76 show album (the cover design is so great; i've gotta rip it off for something)

roger daltrey - ride a rock horse (for the cover art and all the russ ballard songs)

the Devo The Complete Truth DVD

the commentary track is priceless and 100000000000000000000 times better and smarter and cooler than anything that's ever been said or written about the band. but you knew that.

Turkey versus Eagle, McCauley is my Beagle (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 January 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

dlp9001, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

Bargains, bargains. I've gone all post-punk on yo' asses:

The Homosexuals - The Homosexuals CD
£5 in the Virgin sale for possibly the definitive ILM band (i.e. no-one's heard them and no-one knows who they are). Starts off like the greatest thing you've ever heard in your life before petering out rather dismally, then rallying heroically towards the end. Definitely worth a fiver.

S.Y.P.H. - Ungehörsam (Essential Recordings 1978-2003)
German post-punk outfit, even more obscure than the Homosexuals. 2CDs, forty tracks, 2 and half hours of fun fun fun! Extremely, errrrrrrrr, patchy with nothing as good as their 18 minute plodfest "Little Nemo" but it's growing on me. This should have cost me £3 but I got it for nothing - because obviously no-one else was going to buy it.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

post-Xmas purchases in the sales / using HMV discount vouchers:

Lene - Play With Me
Cristina - Doll In The Box
Cristina - Sleep It Off
Adam & The Ants - Dirk Wears White Sox
Nouvelle Vague - s/t
Michel Polnareff - Polnareff's
Phoenix - United
Phoenix - Alphabetical
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (finally! i've still not actually listened to it tho')
Beach Boys - Smiley Smile/Wild Honey
Beach Boys - 15 Big Ones/Love You
Annie - "Chewing Gum"/"Kiss Me" CDS

and last night:
Death From Above 1979 - You're A Woman, I'm A Machine
(which is sounding pretty great so far. Canadian. Best description I can think of is: a bit like Big Black but slightly poppier)

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

After a year of "Oh, I keep forgetting to hit the HMV / Oh, I don't have the spare cash this week / Oh I'll get it next week", I got a CD gift certificate for Christmas. This meant I could finally buy "What Doesn't Kill You" by Candiria, and the KOC's "Riot On An Empty Street". I don't think I could have bought two more contrasting albums if I tried, but they both get a big YAY from me.

S.Y.P.H.

Yay! A nice slsk-user once pointed them out to me, I'd never heard of them. Even though Czukay produced and played bass on a few records! Searching them on ILM I only found a few mentions of 'Little Nemo', by, of course, Dadaismus. I was wondering about buying the compilation because I feared the later material wouldn't be as good as their earlier work. I've heard and enjoyed the first single and the excellent S.Y.P.H. and Pst albums but found Wieleicht a bit dissapointing and thought that maybe those other two albums were enough.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

Wombat - it's pretty ace! No amplified instruments, N!c singing really *well*, teenage-heartbreak style songs written by an almost-40 man (or, often, the breaker). If he can get played on likesay Radio National, 2BL, ABC 774, it could be a total commercial breakthrough! But will probably just baffle the market utterly.

(Actually if Ucunt wanted to beat their alt-country bandwagon in a different country than Americanianana for a minute someone might fawn over it. Maybe he should licence it to L@ugh!ng 0ut1@w!)

Anyway on Saturday I bought:

William Shatner - Has Been CD
the Streets - Fit But You Know It CD5 (local version with dumb tracklisting)
Treetops - What's The Matter, Baby? EP
Lo-Fidelity Allstars - Kool Roc Bass
Lo-Fidelity Allstars - Disco Machine Gun
Lo-Fidelity Allstars - Vision Incision
Kenickie - Skillex EP
Kenickie - Punka
Kenickie - Millionaire Sweeper
Kenickie - In Your Car [CD1]
Kenickie - In Your Car [CD2]
Kenickie - Nightlife [CD1]
Kenickie - Nightlife [CD2]
Kenickie - Punka [reissue] [CD1]
Kenickie - Punka [reissue] [CD2]
Kenickie - I Would Fix You [CD1]
Kenickie - I Would Fix You [CD2]
Kenickie - Stay In The Sun [CD1]
Upshot - Upshot EP

Some of the Kenickie singles were doubles because I couldn't remember what I had. (Who wants to sell me a Stay in The Sun CD2 or Catsuit City?) And all the Lo-Fis ones were, but one was a Skint instead of Sony DancePOOL edition and I've always suspected the latter was mislabelled. Oh, they were there, alright?

way upthread x-post: if you've got the Erasure gig on video Ned, don't rush to upgrade; the DVD looks like it was mastered from an NTSC VHS tape.

Mastodon - Leviathan

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

NickB, what do you think of Noxagt? I have Turning It Down and whatever the next one was called, and I just can't get into them, very off putting, esp. compared to other Load records from that period.

S.Y.P.H. - I was wondering about buying the compilation because I feared the later material wouldn't be as good as their earlier work. I've heard and enjoyed the first single and the excellent S.Y.P.H. and Pst albums but found Wieleicht a bit dissapointing and thought that maybe those other two albums were enough.

I only had the 2nd Holger Czukay produced album previously (one of their four albums called "S.Y.P.H"!) and that seems as if it's their "weirdest" album. The compilation seems overly dominated by material from "Wieleicht" (nine tracks are taken from it) and "Am Rhein", which are from 1985 and 1987 respectively and seem a bit straight. Nothing from the "Harbeitslose" album which is one of the few of their albums I'd heard of previously. Some of the best stuff is from 1993 however!

Max Richter - The Blue Notebooks
that new Ashanti song
El-P & Ghostface - "Hide Your Face" Single

kinda whatever, all over the tracks i guess

xpost: i've got "iron point" by noxagt and I like it. a lot of the riffs are wicked catchy. i guess when it comes right down to it a lot the tunes are compositionally kinda straight-up metal riff-rockers, but the noise, the viola, the whole extended sonic spectrum really makes it something worth repeated listens imho. the billy anderson production really works for them too - it so obliterates any potential eggheadedness (in as much as stomping distorted-viola freakouts can be eggheaded). haven't heard "turning it down"

owen reading, Saturday, 22 January 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

tokyo jihen - kiyoiku (I have to admit it's a let down, even by its own standard of simply wanting to be a glossy fun pop record. but there is one fantastic song, 'sounan'.)
david tudor - live electronic music 1970-1984 (new on EMF)

(Jon L), Saturday, 22 January 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Have obtained Rebore 0, which I liked more than VCN (which I don't like, although it had potential), but possibly not quite as much as I was hoping to. Pretty good though.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 22 January 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Thanks to Direct Connect, the amount of stuff I've downloaded is...fairly substantial.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 January 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I might try that out. I'm afraid that once you've all downloaded my Oum Kalthoum files, you'll discard me like a cheap whore.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 22 January 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Ned, same here! hehehe We now have everything Justus Köhncke recorded - maybe aside from a few farts he's done. ;-) I also have M.I.A. 's Arular as well as a ton of other stuff. My internet provider just warned me I am close to my tranfer limit. :-)

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Saturday, 22 January 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Anniemal - first I've heard this too, I like it.

ethiopiques (has anyone heard this series? incredible)
Second that emotion.
I can't even begin to list what I've dl'd, bought, borrowed and been comped this month.
For some reason, the main things I'm listening to are MIA, Terror Squad, Trick Daddy and Phoenix.
I am an indie fux.

Got "Alien Lanes" by Guided By Voices recently, never owned it before, I've come to the conclusion that I prefer their later stuff. Can anyone explain to me what exactly is the point of "lo-fi"? Why is sounding crap considered in any way desirable?

Rabbieismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

For me, it's been a rather rich month

Chin Up Chin Up -- We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers
Adorable -- Against Perfection
Kitchens of Distinction -- The Death of Cool
Breathless -- Wave After Wave
MIA/Diplo -- Piracy Funds Terrorism
Heavenly -- Operation Heavenly
Buzzcocks -- A Different Kind of Tension (or something like that)
Neko Case -- The Virginian
Stars -- Set Yourself on Fire
Animal Collective -- Sung Tongs
The Go! Team -- uh, whatever the latest one is
M83 -- I D/L'ed a bunch of tracks off the last album and the new album.

I think I out indie fuxxed Forksclovetofu.

new @ full price:

Fairport Convention: Heyday (the BBC Sessions)
Panda Bear: Young Prayer

thrift shop @ $0.75 ea:

May the Circle Be Unbroken (awesome! awesome! awesome!)
The Doors: Other Voices (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!)
Ray Manzarek: It Started with Rock & Roll Now It's Out of Control (imagine me laughing even harder than before)
In a Medieval Garden - (Nonesuch Medieval lute/vocal ensemble music).

That Ray Manzarek record is the pinnacle of so-terrible-it's-priceless, up to and including Patti Smith reciting Jim Morrison's poetry (in 1974, mind you!) over the worst music IMAGINABLE, courtesy of Ray, Joe Walsh, George Segal on banjo, et. al.

Seventy-five cents well spent.

Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld and Lama Rabi Rabi Both great, HU is especially mind warping and hooky. I can't believe I didn't get this sooner.
Opeth - Blackwater Park - Meh, a little slick for my tastes, will try again, though.
Ghostface - Pretty Toney - What can I say, really fun record, smart beats, great hooks, Ghostface flow.
Sunn O))) - White2 Holy drone mastery, will mess your mind.
