Justify your hate: "Groove is in the Heart" by Deee-Lite

I fail to see how anyone could dislike this song. However, knowing ILM, I'm sure there are people who don't like it. I would like them to explain why, so that we may better understand your malformed minds.

I don't hate, I like. I want to dislike Lady Kir Kir, Lady Di Di (what is her name?) as a poor man's Kylie Minogue, but on the basis of this song I can't. Want to dislike gratuitous use of Bootsy, but is good use of Bootsy. Sorry to disappoint. But at least now your thread won't bear the stigma of being Unanswered.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Lady Miss Kier, I believe.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

the qtip part is kinda ok

chaki in charge (chaki), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I've just decided to change my name.

Gentleman Mister Nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I imagine that in any other song, forum or medium, Lady Miss Kier would be the most annoying person on the Earth. But not here.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

i need to change mine too

chaki in charge (chaki), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

qtip
But is it as good as his cameo on Ill Communication?

Sorry, still no real hate.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

dee lite didnt suck until World Clique

chaki in charge (chaki), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

this song is perfect. A weirdly unrepeatable perfect combination of elements with everyone at their best.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 3 January 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

It's all about the slide whistle mixed in with the conga breakdown.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

xpost:
video pretty good too.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

surely at least Geir or chuck must hate this song?

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 3 January 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty certain Geir likes this song.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Bootsy Collins says that thing or something too.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

"Groove IS in the heart. And Deee-Lite definitely smokes- on stage, that is." Or something like that.

surely at least Geir or chuck must hate this song?
Who will be the first to use this on another thread?

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

It doesn't sound like anything special to me but I don't hate it. It's just tiny and underwhelming.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Liked until it was overplayed to the tune of, oh, 10,000 times during the early 1990s and then picked up again and replayed to death as music for advertisements and bad movie soundtrack filler.

firehorse, Monday, 3 January 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Great song but I could never figure out why Bootsy was in the video when the bassline is really a sample from a Herbie Hancock record.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

"I - II - II - I - I - I couldn't dance with another."

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Nothing but annoying downtown dial-twiddling with a yapping-yelping dog-whistle of a vocal.

Alexei in NYC, Monday, 3 January 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Masked Gazza, Monday, 3 January 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

It's one of those rare dance tracks that transcends the usual crappy and dull fare that I normally despise, simply because it's such an infectious goof. Betty Boo's "Doin' the Do" is another.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I quite like it, actually.

Nothing but annoying downtown dial-twiddling with a yapping-yelping dog-whistle of a vocal.

-- Alexei in NYC (wassil...), January 3rd, 2005.

Uncool. Don't do that, please.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Masked Gazza, Monday, 3 January 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Melissa otm. there's just nothing there, though the finger-snap breakdown is cute. it's not I like hate Deee-Lite. I even bought their shitty techno record. but when they're capable of minor glory like "Rubber Lover," this is just a forgettable novelty.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Considering all of the records out there that actually don't have anything to them, picking out the definitive exercise in proto-Jaxx maximalism and saying "There's just nothing there" completely boggles my mind.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

It's based around a sample from Herbie Hancock's score to Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up, which -- of course -- immediately renders it a classic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Dan - I like songs

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Uh-huh...? (IOW there's absolutely a song in there! Songs like "Baby Boy" or "Come On Over" get away with far more egregious melodic noodling without people questioning whether they are songs or not so why does Deee-Lite get "special treatment"?) (ans: because it's house music more than pop music) (to which I say PHOOEY)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I love this song, but I thought the album kind of sucked ass in comparison.

darin (darin), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

It's all about the slide whistle mixed in with the conga breakdown.

which comes from Vernon Burch's "Get Up", of course.

"What is Love?" is ten teimes greater than GIITH - and that's pretty great!

jed_ (jed), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

"E.S.P." is actually the best single off that album.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

ILM Scoop! Look for the New Country Crossover version, featuring an all-star cowboy team of Jimmy Buffett, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow and John Mellencamp and Gordon "Sting" Sumner - "Groove is in the Heartland."

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

I fergot the link I reckon I oughtened to have hung fire a little before I hit that ol' Submit button.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

I like the SNL performance of this, with Bootsy and Maceo.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

there are so many kitschy, wonderful elements of this song (catchy Bootsy lick, the other stuff noted above), but somehow they never come together. Which might be the point, of course.

don weiner, Monday, 3 January 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah ive always found it a bit disjointed.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Groove is in the Hate

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Groove is in the Ass!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh God, if I could turn back time...

The Ghost of Cher (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

Too late. You've crossed the river Rubicon, my friend.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

I love "Good Beat" waaaay more, but this is ridiculously classic.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Bootsy isn't on the song but is in the video? Yeah, and so? It's Bootsy. Nuff said (unless you're Fatboy Slim, who turns shinola to shit).

C'mon, it's a glorious song, unaffected by a million plays in shitty meatmarket student union clubs.

stew, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

It's based around a sample from Herbie Hancock's score to Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up, which -- of course -- immediately renders it a classic.

That's funny...I never realised Herbie Hancock did the score to Blow-Up...but then again, I found it to be an utter disappointment (as did the girl I was dating at the time), and scarcely wanted to pay attention to it. I think it's the worst film ever made. I guess Italian neo-realism doesn't translate well into English, because I loved L'Avventura. That's a bit off-topic though...for I Love Film, I suppose. I still didn't realise Hancock had anything to do with the movie...but then again, I don't remember Jane Birkin being in it either.

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

I've always heard that it was Bootsy playing bass on this song.

And even if it's not Bootsy, that's a sick-assed lick that is still fresh, fresh, fresh.

Song will always be classic--yes, it can be overplayed but it's not like "Stairway To Heaven" where once it's overplayed, you never want to hear it again. Haters of this song can eat me.

don weiner, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Bootsy isn't on the song but is in the video? Yeah, and so? It's Bootsy. Nuff said (unless you're Fatboy Slim, who turns shinola to shit).

So I was just saying it confused me, that's all. My 13 year old brain couldn't handle the contradiction. I only had the vaguest inkling of who Bootsy was anyway (Hancock of course meant "Rockit" to me) and this only confused matters further.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough. I didn't know who Bootsy was when I was 13. But a couple of years later I discovered P-Funk and my life was all the better for it.
Nobody's mentioned Q-Tip's little guest verse in Groove. That's a nice touch too. The video is a total classic. Mike Myers was obviously taking notes.

stew, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Wait, hold on, there really ARE people who don't like this song? My head hurts.

I remember Melody Maker's staff voted this the song of 1990, and you know? Even though that was the year "Soon" was released as well, I can't argue with that decision at all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

(Matos OTM re: "Good Beat"; that's the second-best single on _World Clique_.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)
