Why haven't Can records ever been reissued on vinyl in the US?

why is the only Can vinyl available in the US $30+ imports? It has been this way for as long as I can remember, regardless of fluctuations in Can's hipster currency. Obviously there is a demand for it, or I wouldn't see this endless succession of pricey imports...

Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near?

"why is the only Can vinyl available in the US $30+ imports?"

Because Mute is crazy.

there have been US vinyl reissues, just not anytime in the past 10 years.

hahahahaha! What I wouldn't give for some Carpenters version of "Why isn't Can vinyl available in the States?"

Seriously, though Shakey I think you should write to Mute and complain. I would.

I used to buy imports in the 80's for under 20 bucks. I bought one a day until i had them all. i worked in the bourse in philadelphia which was conveniently located near 3rd street jazz records off of south street. And I still listen to them all to this very day. True story!!

A: Because two losers were on vacation, so there were only three left to write whimpering letters to the label.

Sorry, I was just reading the jokes thread.

Can always had expensive CDs too. Admittedly they were some of the first CDs made available comprehensive-discog. style of any band of any real interest in the early days of the CD. Hey, being pioneers with CD-back-catalogs as well music, imported from Germany/ Europe added value CDs were always going to keep everybody at the indie record company happy. Yeah ask Mute to explain Warm Letherette w/out resorting to Ballard while you're there.

They SET the price for indie import (NO US LABOUR) when they could do it. CDs were scarse. They ruled and so still do. Other imports cheaper ? yeah Italian boots of a major chunk of the a-g genre. Sonic Youth ? sorry, where are the American bands as interesting as these records ? No, i'd rather pay and pay more for decent art.

at tower in mahattan they used to sell all the swell maps reissues for 2 bucks. wait, that was the 80's too. lotsa mute stuff actually. i made out like a bandit. i never asked why.

Couldn't you mailorder?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

Short answer: because they have a relatively small audience.

shookout (shookout), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't think they do by indie/altrock standards, actually

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Longterm anyway

yeah there were the swell maps cut-outs, but they're a sonic youth lo-fi type band (like the Gordons, they inspired Sonic Youth apparently) so no.
I think MAYBE maps re-issue and subsequent cut-out just proved to one arm of Mute that the maps weren't the band Can were

but as i recall, Can had there CDs in line way before the maps, even thought the maps were early and expensive initially. Can are a proven seller, and had there act together and organised maybe using Mute, but German (European/ Sterling) economics,... (eg no cut-outs either way). Get used to it you US kiddies.

I loved the re-issues. Does anyone know if they're planning on giving "Future Days" the same treatment?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 6 January 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

by the way, Swell Maps' Trip to Marineville and Jane from Occupied Europe are coming out as very very nice reissues in the states, by Secretly Canadian. (so nice and affordable, as well as lovingly put together).
