Am I looking forward to the Bad Seeds Rarities Box? (Do not read if you hate Nick Cave)

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I'll be buying this.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

The only track I want to hear is "Where The Wild Roses Grow," because it's a demo which features a guide vocal by Blixa Bargeld, for Kylie Minogue to follow. A love duet between Nick and Blixa...it's been too long coming.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I remember buying a US Magazine on import years ago with a flexi with Rye Whiskey on it... what a great track.. can't remember the name of the damn mag tho...

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

12. Cocks 'N' Asses

I'm sure this one's a keeper.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I'll be mostly interested in the first disc but I'll get it -- I was just thinking about how there should be some sort of rarities comp the other day!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

(haha I read this anyway nyah)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Hey, you're mean.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

i will buy this, it's overdue

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Am I crazy, or did Blixa sing Kylie's part on "Where The Wild Roses Grow" when they played it live? I could swear he did.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

what would a bad seeds rarity be? a track that's actually any good? heh heh thanks, thanks i'm here all week.

debden, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Am I crazy, or did Blixa sing Kylie's part on "Where The Wild Roses Grow" when they played it live? I could swear he did.

Sure did. Saw him do just that in 98

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Yes, then, so did I. Holy shit, 98? That seems like so long ago. I don't think they played it when I saw them again in 02. Blixa did a hell of a memorable scream on Stagger Lee at that show, though.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

I'll probably get it if it's cheap (price of 1 CD maybe?) but I bet it's not going to be....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

I've got a Japanese bootleg called Canary Songs that looks unbelievably similar to the first two discs of this, so I'm not sure it's worth me splashing out for disc 3 only (unless it's the same price as the Low box).

God's Hotel from the first disc is worth the price of entry though - a drunk-sounding Bad Seeds having a laugh on Australian TV.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
Finally picked this up (surprisingly cheap, like $20 or something). Listening to the first disc now...SO nice. I am quietly pleased and surprised at how well his stuff holds up over the years -- if anything, I think even more highly of his work than I did when I first heard it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

So, tell me more about this "Cocks 'n' Asses" song...

Love at the Pier (Arthur), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

It is a jaunty children's song about working on a farm.

Telephonething, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Isn't it, though.

It's an instrumental with occasional noises and grunts from Mr. Cave -- it's also more or less an attempt to do some sort of weird synth/industrial thing, kinda. It's only Cave, Harvey and Victor Van Vugt on the track, and the latter only played the drum machine while Harvey provided some samples here and there -- otherwise there's guitar, synth and piano, and that's it. Bemusing enough and very clearly a B-side as opposed to some rare masterpiece.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

The 6-1/2 hours of "O' Malley's Bar" don't even get old. Well, a little.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

www.cd-wow.com are selling this for £9.99. They also have the 3 upcoming Cure reissues at £10.99 each. They have my money.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

Just finished the second disc and started the third. I'm pleasantly surprised what a good listen this is.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Ahh now I'm tempted. The thought of NC doing wacky numbers and 15 different versiosn of O'Malley's Bar scares me, but this seems such a bargain...

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

I'm totally getting this tonight. Pesky Ned always pulls me back to gothness.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh give in. You KNOW you want to. (Did I mention the Gene Loves Jezebel reissues and the Cure reissues and the...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Get back to me when Catastrophe Ballet gets the full 2CD remaster/reissue/repackage etc etc treatment.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

It probably will, actually.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

AWESOME

adam (adam), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Revelation of the night -- the third disc of the more recent B-sides is actually one of the best 'albums' as such he's ever released! Definitely emphasizes the calmer, piano led side in general but hangs together very well (more so than, say, Nocturama). Winners include "Sheep May Safely Graze" and "Little Ghost Song."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 April 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Some of the best singing I've ever heard him do too!

"Did I mention the Gene Loves Jezebel reissues and the Cure reissues and the.."

That reminds me: does anyone know if there's any truth behind the rumours of an expanded 2CD version of The Scream?

Can't imagine what they might put on there other than Voices and maybe Love In A Void unless they go back to pre-Polydor demos / sessions / live recordings - but that doesn't mean that I don't want.... no need it urgently!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 15 April 2005 07:24 (twenty years ago)

Yes, SATB are gonna start a reissue series in the same vein as the Cure. On the first one, I guess Peel sessions and scattered singles can be expected.

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 15 April 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

Any idea?

(As with The Cure) I think I'm only really likely to be interested in the first one.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 15 April 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

Sorry: Any idea when?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 15 April 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, dunno. I think Severin just mentionned it would happen soon on his website. I'm not that interested in bonus material for these reissues but I really need to replace my albums by remasters. Some of them sound really bad (eg Dreamhouse).

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 15 April 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

i was on the fence about this - i was obsessed with Nick in college and a bit beyond college, but found everything post-Boatman's Call (which, I still argue, is a masterpiece) more and more disappointing (tho I saw him on the No More Shall We Part tour and it was AMAZING - but afterr reading this thread, i'm totally going for it. Heading to the shop after work today to treat myself to some weekend listening. It's just gonna be damn hard to kick this Gal Costa thing I've got going on right now, and prying that new Eclipse / Time-Lag 3xLP comp off the turntable is gonna be almost as hard...

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 15 April 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

tho I saw him on the No More Shall We Part tour and it was AMAZING
Seconded. Show was surprisingly lively considering the material at the time. Still waiting to hear of a US tour for the new one(s)..

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 15 April 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I remember being kinda bored by the No More Shall... tour, esp. upon hearing that dreadful O'Mally's Bar

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 15 April 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm enjoying the hell out of this box. Haven't made it to disc 3 yet but Ned's got me all pumped now. Pesky Ned making me appreciate recent Nick Cave!

adam (adam), Friday, 15 April 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

A third vote for being blown away by the No More Shall.. tour - that show was out of control, I couldn't believe how great it was. Roger, you didn't like Abattoir Blues any?

Hey, who sings on "What a Wonderful World"? This friend of mine used to swear up and down that he'd heard a deliciously twisted version of that song sung by Blixa, and I could never find it & wondered if he dreamed it up.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 15 April 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Just Cave and McGowan on the official release

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 15 April 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

I saw the little 'pre'-tour for No More that he did as a solo thing -- sorta -- where it was him on piano, Ellis, Susan Stegner from Band of Susans and I forget who was on drums. Absolutely blinding show at the Wiltern, really grand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 April 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Just Cave and McGowan on the official release

Well, damn. More and more I suspect this friend of mine just wished that every song in the world was sung by Blixa Bargeld.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 15 April 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

That third disk is wonderful! The best nick cave album in many years!

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 15 April 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Ha, see, I'm not alone! It really is something of a revelation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 April 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

My passionate love affair with the music of Nick Cave = rekindled x100. And I'm still on the first disc!!

Anybody else, after listening to this, kinda getting the feeling they've maybe given the last few a raw deal?

It was more expensive that I thought ($27 with tax) but as soon as I heard the back-to-back trio of the Roy Orbison cover, the Leadbelly cover, and "Scum," it was already worth every penny. I was suddenly reminded of why I was such a big fan for many years (opposite reaction to the Pavement reissue, which left me wondering what the hell I saw in the band all those years)

"God's Hotel" has been a mixtape favorite of mine since high school - the version here sounds a tad different - maybe remastered? I mean, it doesn't have the false start - and I definitely don't remember the "what did he say" ad libs in the right channel during the "Everybody is deaf" verse.

One complaint - why the crap packaging? I mean, I know it kept costs down, but really - paper sleeves?

Anyway, this made my weekend. On to disc two!!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 16 April 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Jim White?

And I think Blixa may have done Wonderful World at live shows.

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 16 April 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

I kind of dig the packaging. A little cumbersome, but it feels sort of homemade, or something. Feels like a keepsake, anyway.

That 3rd disc is amazing, tis true. I loved the new album, but was somewhat indifferent over the last two, so having these additional b-sides is making me wonder if I shouldn't give them another spin.

Can I tell everyone that I'm loving "Rye Whiskey" and "The Train Song". And I'd forgotten how much I love "Scum"...

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 16 April 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

"Knoxville Girl" is my favorite unofficial Murder Ballad. I heard this years ago, it's just so damn good!

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 16 April 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

Anybody else, after listening to this, kinda getting the feeling they've maybe given the last few a raw deal?

I'm definitely thinking that now. I mean geez, this REALLY is something of a revelation.

I was a bit bemused by the packaging sparseness, but the basic black/silver/white presentation is kinda cool, and it gives you all the liner note info you could want, so hey.

It's been a ridiculously good year already for rarities comps, reissues and the like, whether single artist like this or overviews like I.M.'s 1981 box. That and lots of great new stuff as well! I'm extremely pleased by this year, one of the best for me in a while.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 April 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

me too, and like i said upthread, i was sorta blindsided by it. It was a "wellllllll....OK" purchase (I know you all know that purchase) and I've been listening to it all day.

First disc still my favorite though

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 17 April 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Damn it's cheap! Three boxes and it's on sale at Vinyl Fever for just over $20? I'm definitely going to get this when I'm not-so-broke.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 17 April 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Just picked it up. I can't WAIT to soak it up.

So should I single out "Cocks And Asses" first? Or just start from the beginning.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Sunday, 17 April 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

From the beginning. Just let it flow. (Interestingly, the collection is only generally rather than specifically chronological, but starting with the acoustic cuts of Tender Prey songs is still a sharp move.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 April 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

i'm not into "Cocks and Asses," guys. It's a cool title, but that songs is NOT a highlight for me.

Best previously unheard song: "I'll Love You Till The End of the World" (wow!!)

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 17 April 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

Cocks and Asses!

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Sunday, 17 April 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

I like the flow on each of the discs, and I like the way they've been broken up into eras, or at least to my mind. 'I'll Love You Til The End Of The World' is a great track, indeed.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 17 April 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

Best previously unheard song: "I'll Love You Till The End of the World" (wow!!)

Ah, you'd not heard that? I was familiar with it from the movie soundtrack, which is rather better than the movie itself, according to donut debonair.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 April 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

Nope! Never heard it. In fact, I had only been familiar with MAYBE ten of those b-sides (acoustic versions of well known tracks notwithstanding) - God's Hotel and Little Empty Boat have been favorites of mine for years, but beyond those and a few more, it was all new to me!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

Oh fuck of God, I probably need to have this.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah me too. thanks a lot you guys.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

nine years pass...

So I've had this great box since it came out and only just discovered that some of the tracks were edited to make everything fit! After just a cursory inspection, I've found that "Shoot Me Down" and "Swing Low" were both faded about 30 seconds early. Anyone know if any other tracks suffered similarly?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 3 August 2014 23:59 (ten years ago)

I got it, a quick bit of research led me to one of the Discogs.com entries. Here's the affected tracks and the correct lengths and sources:

1-11 The Train Song - 4:46 (The Ship Song)
1-14 Helpless - 4:30 (The Ship Song)
1-15 God's Hotel - 3:16 (Rare On Air)
1-16 (I'll Love You) Till The End Of The World - 4:40 (Loverman)
1-19 What Can I Give You? - 5:31 (French promo)
2-4 Jack The Ripper (acoustic version) - 4:51 (Straight To You)
2-5 Sail Away - 4:40 (Do You Love Me?)
3-13 Shoot Me Down - 4:02 (Bring It On)
3-14 Swing Low - 6:02 (Bring It On)
3-17 Nocturama - 4:37 (Rock Of Gibraltar)
3-18 She's Leaving You - 4:16 (Nature Boy)

Very annoying! I'll be replacing my digital copies with the proper versions.
