aka Diva vs.
Ingenue

(and if you have both records, should you even bother with anything else* these two have done?)

*=does not include the Eurythmics

Lennox
I saw her back in the beginning of summer 2003 and she was nothing short of a POWERHOUSE. For me, she is quite simply the greatest female singer of all time. And Diva is a classic. Her work with the Eurythmics ranks as highlights of the 80's. Bare and Medusa are pretty damn fine as well, .... but Diva is an absolutely perfect beast.
Lang is great as well and can sing her ass off.

Is the new Lang covers album good? I've heard lots of nice stuff about it, but a cursory listen to "A Case Of You" put me off - the changes she made seemed gratuitous, like she felt she had to make it her own but didn't know how (Tori Amos did much better in identifying the actual problems in the original and fixing them).

I like Hymns of the 49th Parallel quite a lot, and I'm very familliar with over 3/4 of the originals. Most of the takes are straight, with very little ornamentation and a clear vocal; some have dubbed it 'frosty' or 'icy', and it's definitely 'detached'. 'Reverent' is a good word as well, and the title of Hymns is appropriate for how she treats the songs. Only her Cockburn cover, 'One Day I Walk', rings false for me; the Siberry songs are exquisite. 'A Case Of You' is a bit drawn out, perhaps, and it's not among my favourites, but even disliking that, I think the album is worth a listen.

back to the topic, I say Lang. She's more iconoclastic and creative, and gets big points for being a wildly butch lesbian in 1980's Alberta. Search 1995's All You Can Eat as well. There's a lang C/D from a few months back where we discussed AYCE pretty well, as I recall

Never been wild about Annie Lennox's solo stuff, with the exception of "Why?" and "Love Song for a Vampire" (which is truly sublime, actually, especially the middle-eight "STILL FALLS THE RAAAAAAAIIIIINNNNN!!"). "No More I Love You's" makes me want to eat a big heaping bowl of Agent Orange and tatoo my eyelids.

K.D. Lang? Hmmmm. "Constant Craving" was a nice enough tune. You could put a gun to my head and I couldn't name another song by her.

I've got my old KD Lang albums hanging about but I would also make a case for Shadowland.

Alex in NYC otm about "Love Song For A Vampire" which does better in one song what a thousand pale-skinned young women do on LiveJournal.

KD Lang, is probably better though - "The Mind Of Love", oh the strings, actually Ingénue and All You Can Eat are both excellent albums.

They've both got great voices.
