Why does everyone hate "Acky Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus. I actually think it is a fun song. ( and i am afro american )

It's weird, as I remember it the whole deal was that Garth Brooks in fall 1991 was essentially heralding 'the new country' in a goes-commercially-overground sense (parallel to Nirvana with its deal), but this was actually the song that got a lot of airplay soon afterwards, or so it seems to my mind. I also remember Travis Tritt complaining at some sort of awards or festival show that Cyrus was turning country into 'an ass-wiggling contest' while allegedly Cyrus was covering "Rock and Roll" by Led Zeppelin at his shows, so clearly the man was ahead of his time.

a wedding reception staple until the end of time

The song is pretty innocuous for about 45 seconds, maybe even sorta cute. From 45-85 seconds, it starts to grate on the ears. For the remainder of its duration, it is not unlike the sound of an uncouth gentleman neutering hyenas in a dirty alleyway. And if it happens to be played on the jukebox twice in a row — well, pray that it doesn't happen.

I am adding "( and i am afro american )" to the end of every one of my posts from this point forward.

trendster

Because it's the only station that comes in, contemporary country radio is continuously on at work and I haven't heard this song in years. Maybe I'm just blocking it out. But that's ok.

"it is not unlike the sound of an uncouth gentleman neutering hyenas in a dirty alleyway."

You say that like it's a bad thing.

TS: "Achy Breaky Heart VS. "Baby's Got Back"

Choose carefully. Crossover ass-wiggling is a serious business.

polyphonic has nailed it; forced exposure to the song really makes the skin crawl. It's like a completely charm-free version of "The Macarena".

Coz he has a mullet.

Ceezargh, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

line dancing is totally fucking fascist

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Every time Billy sings that "You can tell my feet to hit the FLOOR" line I wanna kill somebody.

Man I fucking hate country music.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

I like country music. I just hate Hee-haw.

I think in this case, it's not so much the song as the singer. The song is incidental (though at the time it was inescapable and, let's face it, awfully stupid). The man himself, however, is an utterly indefensible clown....hence the hatred.

It's the song for me. I think some people would defend him by saying he was in a David Lynch movie.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

he was in a David Lynch movie

Ah, B.F.D., so was Lara Flynn Boyle.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

I do not speak for myself in this case. I am wholly indifferent to Billy Ray and have no idea how he compares to Trace Adkins or any other country star. I just know this song is like a tumor doing the hokey pokey.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

it is more the singer than the song. He had a mullet, didn't he? At a time when no-one else did, either ironically or non-ironically.

This song is intrisically linked to line dancing, indeed, it may have heralded the arrival of line-dancing in the UK.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

The song is incidental (though at the time it was inescapable and, let's face it, awfully stupid).

It really wasn't that inescapable; I think I've heard it in its entirety maybe once.

Bill Hicks summed up my feelings to that man quite well, he was eager to start an NBC series called "Let's hunt and kill Billy Ray Cyrus".

blount, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

anyhow this song's way too slow and, not to get all geir, but basically 'the itsy bitsy spider' with less, um, melodic variation or something. it's slow and boring and not nearly funny enough, i think there's a lil bit of harmony at the end (??), a 'wooohoo' to let you know 'this song is over' that's alright if i remember correctly.

blount, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

the reason they invented a line dance was that otherwise you'd just sink in your jaw, do a chicken strut until your friend laughed, and then stand around till it ended. What ELSE could you do to this?
