Radio 1's "Ten Hour Takeover"

...was yesterday. Basically, the deal was for 10 hours they'd only play listener requests, which could be absolutely anything contained in the BBC archive.

Fantastic idea, although in practice it seemed the choices were heavily biased towards:

a) TV Theme Songs
b) Comedy cover versions performed by R1 DJs
c) Songs they'd be playing anyway

Thing is, minus all the terrible ironic choices(stand up, those goons who asked for the News 24 Theme) this could've been potentially great. Just imagine what you could get played on national radio. Imagine!

Next time round, will you be ready to bombard them with requests with Nurse With Wound and Extreme Noise Terror? Uh, assuming they ever do this again.

didn't know about it, sounds like you're right in that it was a wasted opportunity but this ought to be expected. it's like on the request video channels you'll get people actually paying (by telephony) to pick tracks that get played all the time anyway.

Imagine.

Texts:

1) Natasha Bedingfield "These Words" OMG Shee is so kewl...
2) Captain Beefheart "Ice Cream for Crow" Hey, I know you wont, but what the heck...

Now, which one is Moyles/Wez/JK/Joel going to play?

Yeah, I know they aren't about to break out the Van De Graaf Generator, but it does kind of defeat the point of the exercise if they keep putting in playlist stuff.

They had a special website facility allowed you to see the texts coming in, and most of them were in fact like that first one. At one point, there were SIX simultaneous requests for Billy Joel. And one lonely soul asking for GWAR.

Radio 6 mix should do this one day.

i enjoyed what little i heard. biggest bum note was the hi-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-LARious version of Eamon done by Colin and Edith. nobody but C&E would have actually requested to hear that again.

also it made me think "blimey Enter Sandman is rubbish". and then they played Superman by Black Lace which i enjoyed more.

i quite like Enter:Sandman, tho i usually end up wanting to hear Weird Al's 'Enter:Napster' instead

These things are always a bit of a con. They get far more requests than they can fit in, so end up selecting the tracks themselves anyway.
