there have been two more Do They Know Its Christlas singles since 1984, most recently last year, but to my knowldege there have been no new versions of We Are the World since 1985.

So why's that then?

proposed new lyrics:

WE are the best
WE are the winners
WE are the ones be stacking up the cash so let's get dinners
There be people dying
But we're saving OUR OWN lives
It's true we make a better day JUST YOU AND ME and not them

Because there are very few singers on the charts now.

Well, the Western world has become all thug and bling now.. expect Bush One, a collaboration of high ranking Republicans, to produce a hit single called "F**k Kyoto And Their Protocol!"

Any time there is a need for some disaster relief, the people who will not give unless they get something back should be sold a copy of We Are the World. There is no need to make a sequel or make any new songs of this type. One will do. Just tell people it's We Are the World 2005 and they'll buy it.

Radio stations could also raise money by playing it nonstop until enough pledges come in to shut it up. Just like NPR.

"We Are the World" not only made me (more) ashamed (than usual) to be American, it made me ashamed to be a member of the same species.

So, is this new version a charity record or what? That article doesn't mention it is for any cause except "making history". Since the only redeeming thing about the original (and likely the remake) was the fact that the proceeds went to famine relief, you'd think they'd advertise that fact.

i still think "so let's get dinners" is a great line and should be used

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Stevem, your version is beautiful.

And I thought it was a faultless song to start with.

I love that mtv.com chose a press shot of Jermaine Dupri that makes him look like he's reeling from being jacked in the face with a tube sock full of quarters.

Dupri said this new track is automatically going to be different from "We Are the World" because it'll have rappers on it, but he's hoping that it will strike a chord like its predecessor.

I have almost no doubt that the chord it will strike will be the same utterly revolting one indeed.

The last paragraph in that article is the best ever though:

"This feels like what we were waiting on. I know Usher was waiting on this. This is his year to at least win the Grammys and have a good Grammy shelf in his house. The [awards] I'm up for, I don't know if I'm gonna win. I can't really say 'cause they're tough. One of them categories, "My Boo" and "Burn" are nominated in the same category. I have a better chance in that category."

Clearly it was important to report that Jermaine has mastered simple statistics.
