grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

rem --> nirvana is totally OTM, no firehose intervention necessary.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

youn, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

I must say I don't jump to REM when thinking of Nirvana influences, but it can't be a secret one either!

Perhaps Bauhaus -> Nirvana

Piers, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Leo Sayer -> Bronski Beat

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

Debbie Googe: "Bilinda joined in 1987, she came for an audition and sang 'Bargain Store' by Dolly Parton which was more than enough to win me over."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

aah!

youn, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

-- grimly fiendish (simonmai...), January 5th, 2005.

shadows/mogwai - seems so clear now dunnit? Genesis/Franz, for sure.

Not to mention Genesis -> Mr Bungle.

Piers, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, IINM Kurt Cobain frequently namechecked REM as one of his all-time favourite bands and was planning to collaborate with them if it wasn't for that incident.

Does Jack White cop to Bon Scott?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Voivod -> Sonic Youth & Pantera

Triple Ho, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Youn, I was surprised to read that, but it actually makes a lot of sense when you listen to something like "Drive It All Over Me".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Rivers -> Joey Ramone

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Has SY said that about Voivod? I can see them loving Nothingface but it seems to me that SY's guitar sound had been established years earlier, when Voivod was a lo-fi screamy thrash group. Also, Voivod seems like a more obvious reference point for post-hc math rock than for the (relatively) lighter dronier sound of Sonic Youth.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

There might be parts of Dirty that are in debt to Nothingface. The wonderful Voivod I imagine are a (secret or otherwise) influence on so many outfits including math rock stuff as you say.

Piers, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Taiko drumming -> Boredoms.

Good Dog, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Steve Reich -> Captain Beefheart

Evidence: Lyrics to "Moonlight on Vermont" (Come out to show them, come out to show them, come out to show them...)

Dr Benway (dr benway), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

Void → Sonic Youth

LSD ARISTOCAT (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

Has SY said that about Voivod?

Apparently, but possibly not actually. I am going by a review which says, "Voivod are still looking for the sales figures to match their critical acclaim. Cited as the influence by bands as polarly opposed as Pantera and Sonic Youth..."

Perhaps the author is a big fat liar or mistaken.

Triple Ho, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

Has SY said that about Voivod?

(see above for part 1 of answer)...

and then there's this:

"When singer Denis Belanger left Voivod before the last album, drummer and self-proclaimed "conceptualist" Michel Langevin considered breaking up the band to pursue a career in computer animation. He changed his mind though, prompted by support from other groups, including Soundgarden, Sepultura, the Ramones, Pantera, Sonic Youth and the Foo Fighters." from http://www.gazette.uwo.ca/1997/October/3/Entertainment3.htm

Triple Ho, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Triple Ho, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Robert Plant -> Cee-Lo

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Forget Voivod.
Billy Joel, "You May Be Right, I May Be Crazy" or whatever -> Sonic Youth, "Dripping Dream"

queen -> gary numan, johnny marr
yes -> the replacements

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 6 January 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

prog in general -> bruce springsteen, circa e-street shuffle and born to run. SOMEONE in the e-street band HAD to be listening to close to the edge, the lamb lies down on broadway, and maybe even some early king crimson or zappa.

(maybe that's a thread idea -- "bruce springsteen: closet prog rocker?" -- anyone wanna run with it?)

synthpop in general -> bruce springsteen, circa born in the usa. though i suspect bruce's tastes ran more towards the likes of naked eyes, not numan-depeche mode-human league.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 6 January 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, i hear a lot of the numan/mode/league/OMD stuff i loved (and still do love) in brooce.

today's thought: frankie goes to hollywood + ACR -> !!!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 6 January 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

which, incidentally, is a GOOD THING

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 6 January 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else think that Sean Ryder's vocal style is unusually similar to Damo Suzuki's?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 6 January 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Anita Baker->Sarah McLachlan

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 5 March 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Alice Cooper -> Sonic Youth

Evidence:

All of "Alice Cooper Live: Toronto Rock n' Roll Revival 1969" album, especially the guitar one minute guitar feedback intro on #3 which sounds like it could be on Goo and the rest songs 3 - 6, in particular sound very much like the early SY sound up through Goo, but especially the S/T, Confusion Is Sex and the feedback guitar tonalities that punctuate everything up through Goo. If you haven't heard it, you will laugh upon hearing it.

Sonic Youth covered "Is It My Body" as a straight cover.

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Boston -> Weezer

For years, I've theorized that Weezer's big rock harmonies are an homage to Boston's "More Than A Feeling".

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Here it is, in case you couldn't find it:

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Elvis -> Everybody

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Michale McDonald -> Anita Baker -> Rick Astley

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

For years, I've theorized that Weezer's big rock harmonies are an homage to Boston's "More Than A Feeling"

that would imply tunefulness/hummability on the part of Weezer

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

that would imply tunefulness/hummability on the part of Weezer

Uh, actually, yeah.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

one more bit of evidence for:

Alice Cooper -> Sonic Youth

SY also did a straight cover of "Hallowed Be Thy Name".

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Thursday, 12 May 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

yes -> the replacements
This is a secret? I thought it was an integral part of their Origin Story.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 12 May 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

Sparks --> Andrew W.K., Scissor Sisters, The Darkness (esp.), Junior Senior, Electric Six, etc.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 12 May 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

Although it should be noted that the forthcoming cover of "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us" on Darkness dude's solo album might not make them a "secret influnce," but the absence of Sparks in all those Darkness reviews that consisted of nothing but namedrops (Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Cheap Trick, QUEEN) is criminal. I hear much more Mael than Mercury in his voice.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 12 May 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

Blonde Redhead --> Henryk Górecki

bucket.pete, Thursday, 12 May 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

Roberta Flack --> Antony and the Johnsons
Van Morrison ---> Antony and the Johnsons

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 12 May 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else think that Sean Ryder's vocal style is unusually similar to Damo Suzuki's?
-- Dr. C (petethane...), January 6th, 2005.

This has been mentioned a good deal in reviews of the recent Can reissues, but I don't recall it ever being said in the Mondays' heyday. Perhaps someone can prove me wrong, but I don't remember a single Can comparison (even to Halleluhwah, which is uncanny)

bham, Thursday, 12 May 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

I always thought
Creedence-> nirvana did i read somewhere kurt was in a ccr covers band aged 15 ? it all makes sense...the catchy riffs and chorus. the flannel

grapple (grapple), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm convinced Pink Floyd (or at least Roger Waters) was secretly really into to the Osmonds' 1972 live album circa the making of "The Wall".

For those who've never heard the Osmonds Live LP, here's how it starts.

drench, Wednesday, 31 May 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

Not neccesarily very secret but:

Tyrannosaurus Rex + Incredible String Band --> Devendra Banhart

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

Boston -> Weezer

For years, I've theorized that Weezer's big rock harmonies are an homage to Boston's "More Than A Feeling".

More like Cheap Trick -> weezer, I think. Also KISS -> weezer and Pixies -> weezer, the last one being one of the biggest reasons weezer were ever good, I think.

Steve Goldberg (Steve Goldberg), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

sun ra --> the who

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think KISS -> Weezer is a particularly secret influence.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think KISS -> Weezer is a particularly secret influence.

No, neither is Pixies -> weezer, I was just speaking generally, sorry. I just think it's a pretty interesting mix of shitty and good influences for a band that has made both shitty and good music.

Steve Goldberg (Steve Goldberg), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

Agree with Steve about Weezer. They have never been renowned for a particularly polished sound, which makes them have more in common with the mentioned acts, and also The Replacements, Sugar and Go-Betweens, than with Boston.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)
