S/D: This Mortal Coil

I know this isn't much of a thread with the three or four albums they have, but I still figured it would be useful for a TMC beginner.

Michael Copeland, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's probably fine to have a S/D thread even if the artist only has two songs! Maybe even less.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only heard their cover of "Kangaroo" but it is very spooky and cool.

youn, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah and most of their albums have like 20-30 tracks so it's cool.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Search:

It'll End in Tears: "Kangaroo" (spooky, yes), "Song to the Siren" (of course), "Another Day" (twee!).

Filigree and Shadow: "The Jeweller" (spooky and creepy)

Blood: "Mister Somewhere" (more twee!), "You and Your Sister" (attractively befuddled), "I am the Cosmos" (vast).

Come to think of it, I might as well stop here and just say: Search all TMC's cover versions, pretty much. But they're tough artists to do a S/D on, anyway, since much of their stuff has to be heard within the unique world of each album, they're truly an album "band" that way. Even weaker half-formed snippets are often tendrils holding together the most sublime moments, so it's hard to want ot destroy any of it, really (yes, even the sounds of babies gurgling).

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone who says "Destroy" or "Dud".....DIES TONIGHT!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

they are all worth having. i never listened to the last one as much though. i did like the stuff on it though. especially the chris bell covers. i was always too chicken to buy that hope blister album (albums?). i don't know why. the first TMC can be painful for me sometimes. as it reminds me of my icky painfully awkward youth. but i love it to death.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only heard their cover of "Kangaroo" but it is very spooky and cool.

My GOD, man! What are you waiting for? Get thee to a music- selling establishment pronto!!

Bimble..., Wednesday, 5 January 2005 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, okay, I realize "Kangaroo" by itself might not convey just what earth-shatteringly incredible music you are missing out on.

Bimble..., Wednesday, 5 January 2005 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think I'm ready to do this. I should go to Amoeba tomorrow and see what they have.

youn, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

the hope blister record sucked FWIW. I listen to BLOOD often...I wish i bought the boxset when i had the chance. ALL THREE ALBUMS PWN.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

also search "acid, bitter and sad" from the lonely is an eyesore box-set. search it like a muthafucka, because it is exquisite.

umm ... i must say, though, i'm not sure "blood" and "filigree" have aged particularly well. i bought them both on CD recently and they were much, much less impressive and awe-inspiring than i remembered. "it'll end in tears", though ... wow.

when i was 16, i made a C90 with that on one side and "seamonsters" on the other. it didn't come out of my walkman for about two months.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm wearing an ill-fitting Seamonsters t-shirt right now, as fate would have it.

THIS MORTAL COIL NEVER MADE A BAD RECORD, AND MAY A THORNY GAGGLE OF EXCEPTIONALLY AGITATED HORNETS TAKE RESIDENCE IN YOUR UNDERWEAR IF YOU SUGGEST OTHERWISE!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Search: What David A said plus 'A Single Wish' and 'Holocaust' from It'll End In Tears, 'I Want To Live and 'Drugs' from Filigree & Shadow, and 'Carolyn's Song' and 'With Tomorrow' from Blood.

THIS MORTAL COIL NEVER MADE A BAD RECORD
They made an ambitious but ultimately patchy one in Filigree & Shadow but there are enough stand out songs on there that it doesn't really matter about the slight filler. I certainly wouldn't say Destroy to any of it.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Blood is certainly an outstanding album. I'm going to listen to it tonight.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, this thread has made me realise i should listen to blood and filigree again at some point soon.

once i've finished the johnny cash box-set.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

A quote from Pitchfork's Filigree review...

"Filigree and Shadow is the second in a line of three This Mortal Coil releases, and is considered by many to be the best. (I'll still take their third album, It'll End In Tears, even if it does have that godawful cover of Big Star's "Kangaroo.") If you're into 4AD, you're probably on your third copy of this disc. If you're not familiar, this is a great place to start... that is, if you like your music spooky and woozy."

Is that not a glaring mistake in there?

Michael Copeland, Friday, 7 January 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that was apparent the moment the word "Pitchfork" appeared.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 January 2005 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Lonley as an eyesore was and is Fantastico!

I actually just recently threw Filigree on the ipod and it inevidably delights. I remember loving It'll End in Tears more though.

Alex is a softee!

hector (hector), Friday, 7 January 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Alex just recognizes quality when he hears it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 January 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The lack thereof makes his blood boil.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 January 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This is true.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 January 2005 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll still take their third album, It'll End In Tears, even if it does have that godawful cover of Big Star's "Kangaroo."

"ARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH! It WAS THEIR FIRST ALBUM NOT THEIR THIRD! GRRRRRRRR!" - Mr. Hopelessly Obsessive Detail-Oriented Man

"It'll End In Tears" = Classic x10.

"Filigree" = classic x6.

"Blood" is...very good but I never play it.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 7 January 2005 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Do people rate the TMC albums in the order that they heard them?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 7 January 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

When I heard the TMC cover of "Drugs" I was disappointed, I thought it was spindly and bland, so I've never listened past It'll End In Tears. That's a fantastic album, obv.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 7 January 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

If I had to rank'em.

1. It'll End in Tears...which is truly a work of fucking art.
2. Blood -- comparitively a little heavy handed, but still gorgeous
3. Filigree.. -- Lovely as well, but it's the one I picked up last...and I've always been slightly put off by Dominic Appleton's lisp.

The non-LP tracks "Sixteen Days" and "Acid, Bitter and Sad" are also well worthing tracking down.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 January 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

My Ranking:

1. Blood
2. Filigree
3. End in Tears

ddb (ddb), Friday, 7 January 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The singer's lisp on "The Jeweler" is hilarious.

shookout (shookout), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Do people rate the TMC albums in the order that they heard them?"

I do! Definitely. From first to last.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Lovely as well, but it's the one I picked up last...

This seems to bear out Dan's theory as well. Strange.

BTW Scott you recommended me Eluvium on a thread about Roedelius/Krautrock eons ago and I finally got around to checking it out when ILM was down recently and like it quite a bit. Thanx!

Bimble... (Bimble...), Saturday, 8 January 2005 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool, Bimble. The new Eluvium is great as well. Really nice electronic/electric drone music. Reich/Eno kinda stuff.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 January 2005 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait! That's right I forgot!!!! There's supposed to be new Eluvium! Damn that would have completely slipped my mind if someone hadn't reminded me of it - what with all the exciting new releases due this year. I'm really beside myself with anticipation about 2005 on a scale I have not yet experienced before about any year. Even if 3/4 of the albums I'm excited about suck, it'll still be a very good year!

And I think it's just SO perfectly ironic that Eluvium has appeared in a This Mortal Coil thread! I have absolutely no problem comparing the two - very quiet, contemplative, gorgeous music. But I admit I liked the first release a little better...he did things on the piano that really resonated with me somehow...like as if I was on the piano myself choosing the some of the same notes in my head. Eerie.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Saturday, 8 January 2005 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
'You And Your Sister' almost makes me blub, after hearing it on 6 Music the day after Peel died and now associating it with that/him. thanks to N for mailing me a copy last week! oh the loveliness...

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Any point picking up the Hope Blisters album?

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, that's just too wonderful to imagine. (xpost)

youn, Wednesday, 30 March 2005 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

no (xpost)

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

sure there is, if you find it for $5 or something. it's got a nice cover of heidi berry's only human and hanky panky nohow is interesting too.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

The only meh moment on It'll End in Tears is the cover of "Not Me."

thirdalternative, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

I actually like that cover, I think its placement on the album before that perfect concluding song sets everything up well -- a brusque mood-shatterer followed by a last swoon.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah in of itself it's a great song, I like it!

Trayce, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

I am in the "it ruins the flow" camp on that one. It could have been so good as, say, the second song on side 1. But by the time side 2 has lulled you into a dream state, it feels like a rude awakening.

sleeve, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

Similarly "Hot Doggie" introduces the 4AD compilation album in an abrupt way it doesn't then follow for any of the rest of the album... maybe Watts-Russell is just efil =)

Trayce, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

LOL yeah, "Not Me" does ruin the flow. I agree with the Hot Doggie problem as well, but somewhere along the way I forgave these things and just accepted them.

Glow In The Dark (Bimble), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

I always thought that it was the rest of the album which was the problem in that it was downhill after 'Hot Doggie'.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

Blasphemer!

Glow In The Dark (Bimble), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

Not downhill by any means, but "Hot Doggie" is excellent.

ilxor, Thursday, 29 January 2009 04:26 (seventeen years ago)

fifteen years pass...

Considering all the bloodthirsty invective I spewed when this thread was first initiated, here's a bold statement .... FILIGREE & SHADOW has in no way aged well.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 12 April 2024 12:32 (two years ago)

Whatever prompted this conclusion!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 April 2024 12:40 (two years ago)

two weeks pass...

I just gave it another spin recently, and compared to IT'LL END IN TEARS and BLOOD, it just doesn't hold together quite as well.
