What's this place, Biblevania? (natepatrin), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

well, it's Metacritic. the Acclaimed Music site has Kanye at 10th too. they're both wrong.

aint that where you have it?

danh (danh), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

well, Metacritic takes into account negative reviews and low ratings. something like P&J, on the other hand, only takes into account the votes of people who like something. so a record that's critically popular but has its share of detractors, like Kanye, is going to score highly on P&J but not as highly on Metacritic.

it is, Dan, but I'm not attempting, with my list, to figure out the consensus of the nation's (or world's) music critics. I'm just putting it where I like it. were I trying to judge where it stood in critical consensus, it wouldn't be tenth, it'd be first.

8 Last Exit by Junior Boys 2004 88

8th, damn! I still can't say I get this album. I do enjoy most of it... but the title track and a few others do little/nothing for me. I think I'd like them to be more dancey or have more texture.

I think the sorest thumb on this list is Van Lear Rose. Sure, we all agreed it was a solid album, but look at the year-end lists. Where'd she go? I guess it was a better album in theory than an album we all actually enjoy listening to...

and i'm still pissed they even include the Talking Heads re-issue? if that's up there, where's London Calling and Another Green World-- or Swell Maps? i'd love to see them sittin' pretty on that list haha.

oh yea, and i can't stomach SMiLE, either.... but i'll still respect it's signature capitalization haha

goddamn, finally! i always feel like i am saying something sacriligeous when i voice my hate for this release.

as far as the junior boys at 8,that seems about right. this release had me with *teach me how to fight*.

agreed on the re-issues. should really be left off or at least have a separate list.

william (william), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

While I agree in theory that reissues ought to be considered separately, Q magazine sent my wife a best-of-04 CD that had "London Calling" in there, and I found it quite refreshing to hear it in that context--that familar slashing D-minor up against the Franz and Aliyah or whatever.

When it comes on, I make a lame joke about "Hey, this is a catchy tune. What was the name of this band again? The... Clash, is it? Maybe we can expect good things from them in the future."

And then my wife kicks me in the shins, because it's a joke I've made too many times before.

the title track and a few others do little/nothing for me.

that's the only funny thing about the album, the title track is the *worst* thing on the album, for the rest i find it absolutely gorgeous. love on first listen. would have put it on third place.
