brooksie, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

That's so polite of them.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

I thought I was seeing spots for a second.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Oh well. It think it was pretty inevitable, especially after their show at the Knitting Factory last year where that crazy roadie poured honey all over himself. They were smashing their guitarys, leaving the stage, and all about to kill each other.

Fuck. What a loss. Still, WWCOHWTG is in my top 10 since 2000.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

say "la vee"

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Wait, check out:

http://www.the-unicorns.com

it seems to be up and running. maybe they just mean that their old web-site is dead. or maybe i'm just in denial. after all:

Nihilo sanctum estne? *tear*

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

GEE ... this couldn't possibly have anything to do with that rap album that they were rumored to be working on, now could it?

Carl Winslow and Jeanne-Claude (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

This would be the best news I've had all week if it turns out to be true.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

It's a joke. That's the band's shiny new site but there's some bandwidth issues.

Bruce S. Urquhart (BanjoMania), Thursday, 6 January 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

I think it may be a joke as well- this band's whole schtick is that they're 'death-obsessed'. 'Killing off' your band just furthers that.

cdwill, Thursday, 6 January 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

*whew*

I love these guys.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Apparently this wasn't a joke...

cdwill, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

yeah, rolling stone said the same.

damn.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Woo hoo!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

when did DiS start rewriting press releases in such a sub-pitchfork obnoxious manner?

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

"a senior source close to the band"

Huh?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Aren't they one of the millions related to the Brian Jonestown Mascara?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

i can find out for sure if you guys really wanna know

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

please do!

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

that DiS article refers to them as a four-piece, so i'm not sure how reliable the story really is.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

i'm on the case.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
apparently they're starting a hiphop thing called th' corn gang

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 February 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

yuck... that's a gross name. i hope the unicorns aren't actually dead though. and i hope it's not yet more obnoxious white hip hop crap.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Saturday, 12 February 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

these guys were excellent. it's a shame none of their post-unicorns projects ever touched the brilliance of "who will cut our hair when we're gone?"

cutty, Sunday, 11 October 2009 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

slocki, u really dropped the ball, buddy

a perfect urkel (gbx), Sunday, 11 October 2009 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

read this thread title a few times before noticing it was on ilm

thomp, Sunday, 11 October 2009 15:25 (fifteen years ago)

god what if they'd actually been murdered and slocki P.I. had been on the case

think of their poor families, left wondering

a perfect urkel (gbx), Sunday, 11 October 2009 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

Clues are and will be great, I think.

sean gramophone, Sunday, 11 October 2009 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the clues album is a wonderful treat, kind of like if the unicorns of "les os" was fleshed out into an entire band/album. also "let's get strong" is the best song he's ever written. it's weird how little press it's gotten, but i think this may be a result of alden's fame-fucking anarchist ways. like more got written about nick's sideprojects than this.

samosa gibreel, Sunday, 11 October 2009 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

also here's a lonely clues thread i started a while ago.

samosa gibreel, Sunday, 11 October 2009 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

+1 on that Clues record. So, so good.

Tourtiere (Owen Pallett), Sunday, 11 October 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

Yes. The Clues record has been swiftly ascending the ranks of the year's favourites. Picking between Clues and Fever Ray @ popmontreal was difficult. Let's Get Strong is great, but it's all awesome, esp. that opening run of Haarp --> Remember Severed Head --> Approach the Throne.

Need to give this a few more spins. And probably post it in the Clues thread.

Binkie & The-Dream: One is a Terius, the other's insAY!ne (Alex in Montreal), Sunday, 11 October 2009 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

Vapours is also pretty good, mind you, although much more unassuming than Islands' first two outings.

Binkie & The-Dream: One is a Terius, the other's insAY!ne (Alex in Montreal), Sunday, 11 October 2009 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

yuoowemeone, Monday, 14 March 2011 11:19 (fourteen years ago)

hipsters be comin' to the hipster-hop store (bernard snowy), Monday, 14 March 2011 11:30 (fourteen years ago)

for a while right after the band broke up i used to post on the 'secret unicorns forum', which had a lot of twee goths and, weirdly, Destroyer fans (i think that's actually what first got me listening to him!)

hipsters be comin' to the hipster-hop store (bernard snowy), Monday, 14 March 2011 11:31 (fourteen years ago)

yeah really good album. I had a phase of listening to this and the Russian Futurists' 'Let's Get Ready to Crumble' a lot recently.

i love it when a suggest ban comes together (cajunsunday), Monday, 14 March 2011 12:04 (fourteen years ago)

alden's new Baha'i project, HIDDEN WORDS, droppin soon

sean gramophone, Monday, 14 March 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

also, if any of you unicorns stans missed the totally totally great, underrated CLUES album, a couple years back - get on it.

sean gramophone, Monday, 14 March 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that Clues record was really good.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 March 2011 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

Feel reunion time coming. I mean if DFA79 getting back together can be spun as an "event" I mean come on, damn that album was joyous ("Who Will Cut Our Hair...")

two years pass...

I really like Islands (the first two albums anyway), but haven't quite understood this album, except for a few that I like a lot ("Sea Ghost" and "Jellybones" in particular). Someone help me 'get' it!

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 29 July 2014 15:18 (ten years ago)

We used to play 'I Was Born...' a lot at parties, it's a real fun track to sing along to. Strangely I probably feel the same way about Islands as you do The Unicorns, haven't really ever got into anything other than 'Rough Gem'.
Personal fav cuts include 'Child Star', 'Tuff Ghost' and 'The Clap'.

On a side note, good news for UK (and I presume US) Spotify users - the reissue of the 'Who Will Cut Our Hair...' has created it's presence on Spotify :)

nxd, Tuesday, 29 July 2014 15:25 (ten years ago)

they're doing reunion shows coming up, I think
