MOJO this month says it has 'often been suggested that a combined, scaled down version of illusion I and II would have produced perhaps the greatest rock album of the 90's'. really? let's see all you fans of these have a go at the scaling and combining then if u will.
i only know 'appetite for destruction'.

ooh and before anyone says 'this has been done', it hasn't.

just watched behind the music: guns n roses' and boy was it great.

i'm taking November Rain and Civil War as a given here!

Don't Cry should go on too

Simon Green (fatmancunian), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Anybody here seen the Making of November Rain video video (if you see what I mean)? You get to see Axl's smacked out mate who wrote some execrable sounding short story on which the song was based, and who drones on and on about said tale ad infinitum.

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Vital tracks:

Get In The Ring
My World
Double Talkin' Jive
You Could Be Mine
Coma
Pretty Tied Up
Don't Damn Me
Breakdown
You Ain't The First

and Don't Cry, November Rain & Civil War

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

and Estranged, if it'll fit...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

"14 Years"!

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

"Yesterdays" >>>> "Estranged"

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

This is an excercise in futility.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Right Next Door to Hell should be on it...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

First, replace the drummer with the guy who he replaced.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

When y'all are done with this one, we can move on to whittling Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness down to one good EP.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

(Take that Ned!)

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Myonga OTM. But if you absolutely have to keep the ham-fisted guy, don't include all of November Rain; just Slash's solo near the end.

Anyway you slice it, though, Spaghetti Incident will still be better.

chuck, Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah the Layla part of November Rain rules.

Also, Bad Apples should totally be on....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

First, replace the drummer with the guy who he replaced.

no way. he had a stroke and is all damaged now.

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

steven adler had a stroke? serious? man that's sad if it's true....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

coke-induced. :-(

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Monday, 18 September 2006 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

If GnR were so intent on making The Greatest Rock Record Of The '90s then maybe it wasn't such a great idea releasing UYI I & II in the same week as Nevermind.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 18 September 2006 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone who believes that Nevermind > Use Your Illusion is a cunt.

Eazy-Esteban Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Monday, 18 September 2006 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

"Dead Horse" by Cassetteboy > "Dead Horse" by GnR.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 18 September 2006 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

five years pass...

a "definitive" Use Your Illusion without "estranged"? GTFO

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:00 (twelve years ago)

Or Don't Damn Me? HSISOACKS (holy shit i'm so angry i could kill somebody)

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:13 (twelve years ago)

i've been listening to these albums a lot lately, and you start to realize that GNR lets lumped in with horseshit like Poison and Extreme, but I can't think of a single hair metal band that could have pulled off "Estranged" or anything close.

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago)

Who lumps them in with Extreme or Poison? Even back then they were considered different.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago)

yeah totally -- despite the premise of this thread they were pretty much considered on a higher tier from those bands from very early on: Guns n Roses: Critical Rehab

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 20:44 (twelve years ago)

how were they received in comparison with motley crue? btw, i don't remember people being excited about estranged when it first came out. there's some weird weezer-pinkerton dynamic going on here...

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 21:03 (twelve years ago)

"Estranged" was something like the 8th video and 12th single off of UYI, actually debuted on MTV after The Spaghetti Incident was already out, video was widely ridiculed for its budget and swimming with dolphins indulgences and got minor radio play. but it's a definite 'real heads know the deal' fan favorite.

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 21:09 (twelve years ago)

Who lumps them in with Extreme or Poison? Even back then they were considered different.

I think plenty of casual onlookers think this. I don't think a lot of people make a specific distinction in terms of music, though they might make a distinction in image.

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 21:30 (twelve years ago)

i don't recall extreme or poison being the biggest band in the world at any point. i'm not identifying GNR's overwhelming popularity as a positive thing necessarily, but their prominent place in the spotlight certainly gave people a good chance to pick up on their fairly singular sound and tell them apart from either extreme or poison. for a while there it was nigh impossible not to hear GNR somewhere or other -- there was plenty more to work with than image alone.

I was just looking up record sales and lol Chinese Democracy went platinum

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago)

Given that Axl Rose had 15 years to work on it, Chinese Democracy should have been make of "Estranged"s and "November Rain"s. That would have been better.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 15:19 (twelve years ago)
