Yep. It's that "Fanbase hit" once again. A protest single in support of Brighton FC. Number 10 in the midweeks.

‘Tom Hark (We Want Falmer)’ by Seagulls Ska, released yesterday (Jan 3rd) is Number 10 in today’s midweek Top 40 chart, outselling Kylie, Green Day and Lamarr and one place behind Blue!

The whole thing's daft
We don't know why
We have to laugh
Or else we'll cry

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 6 January 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh Wonderful! Attila is a top geezer - last bumped into him when we played in Brighton last year.

"I don't talk to pop stars
And they don't talk to me
It's a mutual arangement
The way we like to be....

.... one day,
If I'm a pop star,
Will you still talk to me?"

The punk band I was in supported Atilla several times back in the very early 80's - he actually wrote "The Russians Are Running The Henley Regatta" the day he came down to play with us on our home turf.

On one occasion when we were opening for him and the Newtown Neurotics (who were all mates of his from Harlow) at the infamous "Skunks" bar in London; we and the Neurotics had done our sets and I was on stage with John doing backing vocals for his version of "Garegeland", when suddenly glasses and bottles started flying at the stage, rapidly followd by chairs, tables and everything else that wasn't securely nailed down - and a bunch of us ended up having to hide in the basement while a minor riot kicked off over our heads.

Happy days.

Haven't seen him to speak to for several years now.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Heh - we supported him 2 years ago. Since then he's turned up at several of our gigs.

We're playing in Ipswich on Saturday - that's *near* Essex!

A looong time ago, Keith Allen was doing a stand-up spot as part of the Redskins' residency at the Mean Fiddler. Part of his act involved slagging off the England Team and "we're shit and we'll be shit in the World Cup" etc, to which Atilla replied "No we're not we're great" while he was packing up his mandolin behind him.

This'll be the one before "World in Motion" obviously...

I'm a long-time fan - I really think his 'This Is Free Europe' was a tremendous record.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Is he from Harlow or Brighton? I have a song by him on a right-on album I bought when I was a teenager called 'Not Just Mandela', which was mostly by Harlow bands (including the Neurotics), but in the song he sings about Shoreham Harbour.

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

I always assumed that he came from Harlow - that's certainly where he was living in the early '80's.

Whether he originally came from Brighton, has subsequently moved there, is actually even a fan of their football team (as opposed to just being a fan of football in general, which of course he most assuredly is!) or whatever, I'm afraid I have no idea.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 7 January 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

I've just checked on his website. He grew up in Southwick (part of 'Greater' Brighton), but moved to Harlow in 1979 and lived with one of the Neurotics just before becoming Attila the Stockbroker. Why would anyone choose to move to Harlow?

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Friday, 7 January 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

.. to become a stock broker?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 January 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

didn't Steve Lamacq move to Harlow as well? or was it from?

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 7 January 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

He definitely lived in Harlow in the 80s because he wrote a music column in the Harlow Star. Oddly enough, in September 2001, just after England had beaten Germany 5-1, I was in an Irish pub in Camden and saw Steve Lamacq. I went up to him and said "You're Steve Lamacq and you used to write for the Harlow Star". He agreed.

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Oh bollocks. As someone who works in Falmer and is totally against building a stadium here, I'd sort've hoped that this would have just died a quick anonymous death. Always hated that fucking tune too.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Gosh, sudden rush of nimby-ism to the head there. Apols! But still the whole issue is, let's say, a little more complex than that dumb-ass song makes out.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Heh! For some reason, I thought Falmer was the name of the bloke that would "save Brighton", as well as the Stadium. But that's probably cause I live in Reading... (Majedski, for those who don't no)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

No, Falmer's a village on the outskirts of Brighton, but it's where the Universities are located too. Here you go...

http://www.angelfire.com/space/falmer/falmervill.jpg

The field in the foreground is the one that old fucknuts wants to build a stadium on.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

Falmer's lovely, can't they build it in Moolsecombe instead?

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

You'll never fit that into "Tom Hark"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Here's the latest hot chart news (I know you don't really have to sell bobbins to get a hit but, the numbers involved here are crazy low... post Xmas slump?)

Down to 17, total sales so far (up to close of business yesterday) 1,917 - 80% of that online! Skint well pleased with everything so far, the online sales are great, but we need to shift more local stock at HMV and Virgin in Churchill Square as part of the campaign if we are going to have any realistic hope of staying in the top 20.....

Rounder have done over 200 alone but the big HMV/Virgin stores so far only about 100 between them, and they've got about 500 copies each. Of course everyone else going for the Top 40 has national distribution/ promotion/ pluggers and they are catching up with us every day..with the big retail sales days when teenies buy their singles (Fri/Sat) to come. And of course we're away at Spurs on Saturday....

Top 20 wise it's a bit like going 3-0 up inside the first 10 minutes (presales) with the others pulling back to 3-2 by half time, with the wind in their favour in the second half, and us down to 10 men - so we are going to have to do a Leicester/Forest/West Ham and then some if we're going to stay there! But we are Brighton...look at what we've achieved so far against the odds....so anything's possible!

All conceivable evidence says we'll definitely make the Top 40. That was our aim, initially, and we've done it - well done everyone! But now we're aiming higher. Top 30? Quite possible if we keep plugging away. 20? BIG PUSH NEEDED!

So let's make sure all the rest of those MPs get copies, and ask everyone who possibly can to get to Churchill Square and buy their copy/ies there - this afternoon at our HMV instore with Charlie and Jonesy perhaps, if work will allow, or maybe on the way to Spurs. Anyone who's really keen could of course buy a few extra copies and flog 'em to fans on the train on the the way up....we did 100 at the Mobile Shop in an hour after the Watford game, seems there are loads of people who will buy one if it's dangled under their nose!!

But all in all we are doing brilliantly, and great news too is that Skint have had a charity discount on their costs from their distributors, which means more money for the club when everything is totalled up, which will be after the main rush in a couple of weeks. (I've paid out £605 in recording/publicity costs but I won't be asking for that back, I'll take some leftover singles and flog 'em via my website and at my gigs to recoup my costs, those German ska skinheads who've ordered online already love it!)

Just to let you know - we have 5000 pressed, 4500 of which are out there in the various outlets. So no-one's going to run out!

Most importantly of all, the message - that Brighton & Hove Albion FC need a new stadium at Falmer or our club will die - is getting out nationally. One 5 Live already, with at least 2 more lined up. Sky Sports News (and Meridian) coming this afternoon. Skint say we should get Newsbeat on R1. And if we stay Top 20 we are guaranteed a play on the chart rundown on Sunday afternoon......

In addition, of course, once the chart placing is announced, it becomes a national news story - of increasing importance the higher we finish. That, ultimately, is what this is all about: getting the message about Falmer across to as many people as possible. So let's try and stay in the Top 20!

This is the latest news we have received from Attila working with Skint/Falmer For All Records.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

Remind me - those online sales count now do they?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Yes they do.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Ah right. Presumably flogging 100 copies at 'the mobile shop' ain't gonna do buttons for their chart placing though?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 7 January 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

And wait a second there, this is being bought up by German skinheads? What the hell have they got to do with this?? Time to wake the Falmer Home Guard from their slumbers! Permission to panic Captain Manwaring sir!

NickB (NickB), Friday, 7 January 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Did this get into the charts in the end, or not?

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

yes, number 17 in the end.
