at times, i think they do a better job than half the real music mags out there. the end of year issue has some great stuff there. shame they didnt bother covering the albums in their end of year top 20 more throughout the bloody year though, rather than just at the end of it. as for kanye west being number one album though, ummmmmmmm, no.

new york or london?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

TO LOndon is passable in this respect. I miss TO :(

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I hate that prissy "royal we" writing style.

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

release the hounds

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

didnt smash hits used to do the royal we thing too? its not that bad.

ppp, Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

it's coming to chicago soon!

ToNY had some good music writing with Gail O'Hara, and then Elisabeth Vincentelli, were at the helm. Stephin Merritt in particular wrote great reviews, which invariably ended with him mercilessly insulting the artist.

SF should have it, it could be a 5 page monthly.

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Definitely great writing and good perspectives, aside from the hip hop coverage, which is annoyingly predictable. I just let my TONY subscription lapse though.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

I heart Mike Wolf at TONY.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 7 January 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

Bob Bannister rulez, bitches.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 7 January 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

i wonder what miss o'hara is doing now... is chickfactor still going?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 7 January 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

I think CF is finished. I'm totally biased as I've had many a byline in TONY but I do think it's a good mag w/a good section and I like Wolf and Jay Ruttenberg a lot as people as well.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 7 January 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

yeah actually it's been forever since i read it but i was gonna say it has mr. matos's byline (and i like yo' writing, fule, have since i lived in chicago).

I'd say TO London is the only magazine with which I've had a good relationship as a contributing writer, even though restrictions on freelance budgets mean I appear there relatively infrequently (ditto HKM and Peter Watts of this parish) bah humbug. John Lewis is a good editor to work with.

hi dere! [6 months and not counting any more for yrs truly: but who needs paper and ink, right? i'm an *internet journalist* now]

henry k, Friday, 7 January 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

their hip hop coverage is a bit weird/typically liberal. am baffled they gave the kanye west album the number one album of the year rating. i mean, WTF? then you have idiots like franz ferdinand talking about kanye being the future in terms of production and sonics when you have people like dizzee and wiley in the same country as them. deafos.

goldie sovereign (goldiesovereign), Friday, 7 January 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

That's right, Bob Bannister is on there too. Bob = super good

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Saturday, 8 January 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)
