LET'S IRON OUT A FEW WRINKLES!

This is the first proper mix I've made since 2020. I got burnt out on putting my energy into dumping my un-listened to mixes in an oversaturated sea of online music, but recently had a mushroom-epiphany that I should make something new, just to create something with the love and care I'd put in if it were, say, a commercial release. And I should go full DIY: record it to cassettes, design the cover art, make the packaging by hand, write blurbs about each track, create my own website to host a digital version. Cassettes are forthcoming, but I just finished the web-version.

This is made up of favourites: favourite records I've found over the last several years, life-long favourites, and tracks that have made me think "I should make a mix just to include this." I wanted to create something that was the opposite of a spotify playlist, foregrounding personal and historical context, literally telling a story about 20 years of record collecting (I wrote bits about how I found each record and what it's meant to me), and without the anonymity and hyper-convenience of streaming platforms, and without new releases.

The first 45 mins goes from ambient and beatless electronic music to IDM/ambient techno, ca. 1994-2021, then about 45 mins of mostly UK and US house and techno ca. 1993-2002. Was going for a "journey" style mix with big narrative arcs.

last night I was called upon to take over for a bar's local prog rock night. I did it a bunch last year while the normal guy was experiencing some medical issues but he's been back lately. I guess he hurt his leg so he asked me to fill in...about two hours before it started. I was still at work. So I ran home, grabbed a bunch of records and put something together. For the first hour there was another guy helping (in case you're wondering why there's a track from Union in there). given how impromptu it was I won't even pretend these transitions make sense. some of them I think I hit and some were pretty botched. oh well. by the end I was just playing whatever came to mind. including a bunch of my own mashups. most of the mashups you hear are mine...but not all

very nice afternoon listening, loved the Greg Hawkes track and "Love Cascade" most thus far

"Peri Pherial Vision" was also great, looked up the tune and was taken to a YouTube link where the top comment is by....you!!! funny because I'm pretty sure that is also the case with a few tracks i've used in my own mixes :)

I noted on facebook that the Lot has a new feature where it automatically logs the songs played. I figured it wouldn't be able to get all of these and it only got 9. I don't know if it's the mixing (sloppy or not) that throws off it's shazamming, or the obscurity, but what was really weird is that Per Pherial Vision track is one of the few it DID recognize. I'm guessing the software is the same used by NTS or something and somebody manually added it and now it knows.

There hasn't been a copy for sale on discogs for as long as I've been looking. I even emailed two of the people who listed it as owned and neither were interested in selling. I may just have to reach out to him. And finding somebody to repress it. It's so good.

seasoned ILX-or Scott Seward was happy to see Greg Hawkes played, as he would. Kinda shocking that record isn't better known considering he's in one of the biggest bands of the era and it's a really cool new wave album?

yeah. I lost my mind over it when I discovered it a few months ago. It's gotten some play from the Chances with Wolves and Universal Cave DJs, which makes sense. I saw the list of people who own it in discogs and recognized two names. Wrote one directly but he's keeping it. The other guy is a discogs seller I've ordered from who's a friend of a friend, asked my friend to tell him to name his price but never heard back.

This morning I emailed the guy from Sundazed via LinkedIn who I think was responsible for the Model Citizens reissue to see if has any info. No response yet.

Hey everyone, this is a pretty big one for me. I've worked extremely hard on selecting and perfecting these two mixes and I can't wait to share them with you.

I wanted to to showcase the music we're exploring and boosting at our monthly TERRAIN: 'Bangers Without Borders' nights in Bristol.

It's about joining the dots between new and interesting sounds from across the world with what's currently happening in the underground electronic music scene.

So what you get is a big pan-global riddim'n'rave melting pot of everything from Amapiano and Gqom, Bollywood and Bhangra, Arabesk and SWANA-based drill and techno, Coupé Decalé, Kuduro, Latincore, Baile Funk, Baila Riddim... you get the idea.

We also throw in US and UK-centric tunes influenced by world and multi-diasporic sounds.

So here are not one, but TWO mixes to celebrate two years at our current home of the Jam Jar in Bristol.

Oh! I had no idea about that. I knew it was in a Bollywood movie which I haven't seen. It's such a fun tune. I had to do some clever hot-cueing as it's quite a long track to open with, and I wanted the mix to whip along at a fair pace, but the full length song is very good

Hey frogbs, yes it's all digital. I'm good with vinyl, but holding together three records at once isn't something I'm brave enough to try!

I didn't find the bass clashing too much, but there were a couple of bits where the top end was pushing the limiter into the red. I had to reduce the dB on a couple of bits in Audacity afterwards to make it less of a headache. However, other than that, I was really happy with how it turned out, especially the Un.Sub / Watercoaster / Rozzo into KiNK section.
