Is there some tutorial I can watch on making DJ mixes? I make music already, have all the software and some pretty cool instruments like a Nord electro and teenager op1. I like to sample little bits of songs and make something new but I think that’s more remixing than DJing? Anyway, advice for an old folky dude?

If you're interested in learning to DJ there are a few ways to go about it.

If you already have lots of vinyl (ir a big bank account), you could invest in actual turntables, but it's an expensive business.

Slightly less expensive is buying either CDJs (still a lot), or either a standalone or plug-in controller.

The latter is the best and most affordable option. There are a lot of different models on the market, but a plug-in goes into your Mac or PC laptop via USB and you use a program like Rekordbox, Serato or Traktor to mix.

Then it's the fun part: Learning to mix.

ya I just mock everything up in Audacity, helps me figure out what works and what doesn't. not sure what the other software offers that Audacity doesn't have for those purposes. I'm not terribly sophisticated though. you can use it to sample things, adjust pitch and tempo, split the stems out

if you're using vinyl all I can say is practice makes perfect. for very specific transitions I just memorize the spot in the outgoing record and the position of the label on the incoming record.

live, I use Mixx software

for mixes I make at home, I use Amadeus for the multi-track feature and fuss around with the transitions until I like what I hear

I used to mix live with a 2-channel mixer using a laptop in one channel and a turntable in the other, but now I just have the computer so I needed mixing software

I use three, two turntables and then an iPad or phone loaded with 50 or so tracks, many of which are mashups I've made. my regular gig is pretty interactive, the idea is if someone brings a record in I'll find a way to mix it in. it is a wide variety of stuff and sometimes it's difficult to make transitions go smoothly (especially when I don't know the tracks I'm mixing into) but I think that's what people like about it. you never really know what you're gonna get.
