This is my recreation of James Hamilton's set at Gullivers in Mayfair on 18th August 1979, put together using his original mixing instructions. I played this out last Friday, supporting Greg Wilson at Walthamstow Trades Hall, and the reaction was astonishing: rehearsing at home, I had doubts about certain sections, but the large dancefloor remained busy throughout, and watching people fully immersing themselves in the set brought me to a fuller understanding of James's gifts as a DJ.

ps - great change of tempo across the mix. ends up so fast!

1) I think I might have done a compress/normalise... can't honestly remember!
2) Alas, the only recordings of JH mixes are his Capital Radio NYE sets, which are a lot more pop.
3) Yeah, the mix gradually speeds up by 30bpm, and I love the way he takes you with it.

this was more or less mixed live, 75% vinyl, plus a bunch of samples triggered from a tablet. I mocked it up in Audacity afterwards so this is more or less the set I played. if you make it to the end there's a tribute to a certain someone who passed away on that date.

sorry, what i mean is did you mess with the tracks so they lined up to the grid or was it just the original tracks as they were?

Ah right… I used digital trickery to make the transitions tidy, but elsewhere I let the tracks roam free.

One thing I learned: the second half of Cameo: Find My Way is where the magic happens (Greg made an on-point comparison with Love Is The Message) - I’ve never cared much for the zingy first half, so hadn’t spotted this.

recorded this mix earlier today for use as a possible calling card - i'm hoping to reach out to some local radio stations about doing a show and this is the sort of vibe i'm aiming for. it's largely both recent and older leftfield/experimental synth-pop, new wave, assorted other oddities, things i wouldn't (necessarily) play at my more dance/pop-oriented regular DJ outings but which i still would like to share with everyone. i may re-record it at some point since there's some parts of my mixing that i'm not crazy about (nothing brings out my virgo as much as fiddling around with my mixes lol). but i'm happy with my selections and idk, i like to think that someone out there would enjoy listening to an hour or two of this kind of thing.

Many many many years ago, I took a pill with a four leaf clover on it (similar to the picture I used for this mix), which led to me to take a rickshaw ride around Dublin with a girl called Marina. I seem to recall we switched rings onto our wedding ring fingers and pretended we'd just got married in an attempt to get people to give us money. I have no idea why, we had plenty of cash. I also saw Optimus Prime emerge out of the hotel ceiling later that night and watched a full game of football on the ceiling too. Ah, those were the days my friend.
