TS: The Dirty Three versus Jackie-O Motherfucker

For me at least at their best ("I Remember a Time when Once You Used to Love Me") the Dirty 3 are quite moving, but overall the JMO's more formless representation of similar sonic dimensions provokes more habitual, stoned listening.

(Am I doing this right?)

Jackie-O Motherfuckers can be way too overbearing for me. Generally I skip songs or sections on their albums. The Dirty Three, on the other hand, provide me with seamless listening experiences. Never before has melancholia been so weightless and easy to listen to.

I like both bands, but I find myself listening to Jackie-O Motherfucker more often, and I think I like them better. They've got a much greater variety of sound (granted I haven't heard any D3 post-Ocean Songs); The Dirty Three's palette is not nearly as varried; while they do show some dynamic range, it seems their songs fit into one of a few categories--"sad" "rousing" or "bittersweet." I still own one of their albums, Horse Stories, and probably won't sell it, but it still feels somewhat monochromatic.

I also like the drone aspects of JOMF (see: "Bone Saw" on The Magick Fire Music or "Everyday" on Change.) That's just a personal preference. I think the occasional presence of vocals is also a really big plus.

I've never seen the Dirty Three live, and I can still guarantee that i would enjoy the Dirty Three's live shows far more than Jackie O's.

Yeah, JOMF blew the one time I saw them. And from all accounts Dirty Three are wonderful live. Warren was very energetic when I saw him playing in the Bad Seeds a few years ago.

Have you heard Fig. 5? I haven't and I've heard it's really really good. My favorite is Liberation. If Fig. 5 is anything like that I'd like to know it.

I hear what you're saying about Horse Stories. That is probably my favorite of theirs. But rob mackay I guess I find Dirty 3 the more overbearing band. Maybe it's Warren's virtuosity because certainly Mick's guitar playing is subtle as it gets.

Live I would take Dirty 3. JOMF is interesting in a diffuse sense but Warren's manic stage presence and Jim White's dapper drumming are just so captivating.

Figure 5 is quite good, and fairly similar to Liberation.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 8 January 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

there's a sweet tune from fig. 5 called "your cells are in motion." the remainder was poor langley/manson family style screechalongs to me.
dirty three albums are indistinguishable to me, but they do SWELL live. like standing in the ocean or something.

tender milch, Saturday, 8 January 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

fig.5 is great!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 January 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Dirty Three are AWESOME live, even if they've kind of gotten into a rut album-wise. (My favorites are Whatever You Love, You Are and Horse Stories.) The only thing I've heard by JOMF is Fig. 5 and I wasn't too into it. But that was a while ago.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

fig. 5 is about the only JOMF thing i like. and even then i'm still skipping tracks and repeating others. the dirty three wins. hell, they could win on "i remember a time when once you used to love me" alone. but that's really a cover.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 9 January 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Do you know what it's a cover of? I heard when they played Greece once, baffling the band, the Greeks sang the words.

Mourly Vold, Sunday, 9 January 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Ha. I didn't know it was a cover, but listening to it now, it doesn't surprise me.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 9 January 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

I never really cared for Horse Stories. Or at least, I own it and never ever play it. I like the one before it. Which I don't own. I wanted to like Horse Stories. It just never thrilled me.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 9 January 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Scott maybe try "Sue's Last Ride" again and "I Remember a Time. . ." (which by the way looks like originally was done by Greek singer Arleta, titled "Mia Fora Thimami" (not a direct translation then))

Mourly Vold, Sunday, 9 January 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

I should play it again. I haven't really played it since it came out.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 9 January 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

It was one of my favorites that year. I played it to death. Seriously if nothing else, "I Remember a Time. . ."

Mourly Vold, Sunday, 9 January 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

we have the arleta album at my radio station and it actually has a note that one member of the dirty three taped it when he was down there... he couldn't find it anywhere else.

both songs were on the soundtrack to the movie "praise" - i'm guessing it might come up in cheap bins occasionally. in australia. good movie.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 9 January 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

dont know much jackie o,but ocean songs is better than most music ever

robin (robin), Monday, 10 January 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

....i saw the dirty 3 open for low years ago, and they were very captivating...REAL ENTERTAINERS. jomf got written up in a review one time as "a more urban dirty 3" ...jomf don't really approach music from an entertainment standpoint...which can make for spotty live performances...but they tap the unknown more, which means when they hit it...yr going on a ride. i like the possibility of a new trip every time, even if it's bumpy...! where the two come together is in the terrain of melancholia...and both approaches are honorable...and successful. mick turner is a badass guitar player. anyone see venom p stinger...? dig. tg
