I mean, i DID like some of Fevers and Mirrors, but overall, I count myself as firmly anti-Oberst. But has anyone else heard the song "True Blue?" It's off the new double album or whatever and it's really really good.

i always liked that "perfect sonnet" tune - great hughes fodder!

im a huge fan, and i assure you im not even related to the whole "emo" type scene that surrounds Bright Eyes, but could someone explain to me why so many people hate him so much?

In my case, I think you had to be there. You would see me getting disenchanted and leaving.

On a semi-related Bright Eyes note, I was watching Austin City Limits the other night (the episode with Wilco and then Bright Eyes) and M Ward guested w/ Bright Eyes for a song. I'm not familiar with any of Ward's material, but Bright Eyes said they were going to play an M Ward song called "O'Brian," I believe. It was great so I went to download it and I found "Vincent O'Brien." Only problem is that it's not the right song.

Anyways, the song he played with Bright Eyes had a chorus that went something along the lines of, "he could make a string buzz like it was 1989."

Does anyone know what the name of the song is?

I can't get into Bright Eyes that much either. I get about halfway through the song & it just sounds like some whiny teenager playing with a decent backing group. The lyrics & vocal style just don't appeal to me at all.

The M. Ward song is "O'Brien/O'Brien's Nocturne" from End of Amnesia.

haha
haha

I am a blue blood
I will admit that
I dance in blue shoes and wear a blue hat
Live in a blue house
On a blue street
In a blue town
By a blue creek
I write my blue songs
With my blue pen
I sing the blue notes
To my blue friends
Now I don't know that much about you
But I like you
Because you're true blue

I had a blue dream
About a blue star
In it I drove there
In my blue car and when I got there
I met a blue dog
With a blue tongue
We had some real fun
We bounced a blue ball
It broke a blue glass
We banged on blue drums and called it blue grass
I guess the thing I'm trying to tell you
Is that it's best, kid
If you're true blue

Once I had gangrene
I got it real bad
So the doc came with his black bag
I said, 'You know, Doc, I dont feel swell,
if you had a blue bag, I think I'd get well..'
So he came right back
With a blue sack
He said, 'Will this do?'
I said, 'Why not, yeah"
That's why im here today
To tell you
That it's best, man
To be true blue

Out on the blue sea
I sailed a blue ship
I had a first mate
Always had blue lips
His name was Bluebeard
He had a weird twitch
He flew a blue flag
On a big stick
And we ate blue gill and we ate blue chips
Oh I felt real blue, eating that blue fish
Because there ain't much that I won't do
Unless it keeps me from being true blue

Once in a blue moon
There's a blue sky
I wear my blue jeans and fly my blue kite
Thing's like a bluebird, until the wind dies
And then the tears pour
Out of my blue eyes

If it's your birthday
We'll bake a blue cake
And then we'll eat it off these blue plates
Cause kid I don't know much about about you
But I like you
because you're true blue

Yeah I don't know much about you
But I like you cause you're
True!
Blue!

bnw (bnw), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

that was, of course, in response to the request for an oberst hate explanation...

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

monotonous, melodramatic... its the same as 'the boss' argument... lighten up. would be better if his name lent itself easier to plaintive (yet expectant) longing, ie bruuuce.

fancybill, Monday, 10 January 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

for a bright eyes song that's kinda brief, did he run out of pages in his diary?
