Edan "Beauty And The Beast" IS WHOA

holy shit, i'm knocking this promo and i always thought Primitive Plus was really quirky and fun, if a little nerdy/backpacker heavy, but this shit is like true school 80s break-hop through the lens of The White Album and Pet Sounds. I don't want to call it psych-rap, but whatever, it destroys so far. Reversed loops, breaks and ill raps, i only have two songs left til the thing is finished, i only didn't like one song. who has heard this? "Rock And Roll" is particularly insane.

his production is three times better now. this is the convoluted, weird sound he has always tried to approach, but this shit is working REAL well now.

i had the 12 inch of "I See Colours"/"The Science Of The Two" for awhile and never listened. Had I known what I know now...

I admit for a second I thought you were speaking of one heck of a weird Bowie cover.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 January 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

this is exciting. i really, really need a good nerdy hip-hop record right now.

(nb: that was not facetious.)

rollie are you slsking this?

Actually the title is Beauty and the Beat, which leads me to wonder if the cover is Edan wearing nothing but a towel.

i wish this album was getting more coverage, edan might be the best sample-based hip hop producer of 2005.

splooge (thesplooge), Saturday, 12 February 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

I had a brief moment where I considered this the 5th best album of the year so far. Then I listened to the lyrics.

WTFx1000: "butterflies come alive and have SEX!" "A dog takes a shit on the floor and grows wings!" Dude no drugs are not the answer

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

I still haven't heard this but "Run That Shit" by Edan is one of the best reasons why indie rap does not suck.

deej., Wednesday, 30 March 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

"butterflies come alive and have SEX!" "A dog takes a shit on the floor and grows wings!"

Ha ha! I'm imagining those lyrics spoken/rapped by Bob Markley of the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. "Butterflies come alive and have SEX / A vampire bat will suck blood from our hands / A dog takes a shit on the floor and grows wings / Rats will run up your legs, but nothing will matter."

I'll have to check this out.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRDD!!!

This is whoa. Aside from a few 10 - 20 second missteps, this thing is damn solid all the way through. I believe in hip-hop!!1

What else is like this? My 1980s and 2003+ hip-hop catalogue is spotty..

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

i picked this up recently and i've really been enjoying it. its got an almost comic book feel at times, especially towards the end with all that "i put a nameplate on the asteroid belt, and i ran through the future with an androids help - thats when civilians were made of metal" stuff. hiphop can be fun again!

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, really great!

Tyrone Willie Demetrius DeAndre DeShawn (deangulberry), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

the first five tracks are out of control.

it's not quite Madvillainy, but it should satisfy me for a while. I just bought it tonight and it already feels like an old friend (in a good way).

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, anyone who's listening to this and has never heard Primitive Plus needs to change that, like, quick.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

Plus, it's only 40 minutes long. Hip-hop album in not being 70 minutes and containing pointless skits shockah!

mms (mms), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

I love it, great record. The music is great, but I think the rapping is just as well - he sounds like he's obessed with the Wu-Tang Clan. The rhymes and cadences remind me of GZA and Masta Killa in particular.

Dud, because he's just Ghostface now

man, the show last night was pretty incredible. so much fun and so much cuteness. he looked like he was wearing a ratted out bob wig. he and dagha (sp?) were going back and forth and he was rapping the whole time while cutting two records (Tommy the Fox!). he played guitar and kazoo. and the fucking delay pedal! that shit was crazy. he carried it around with him to accent the vocals. every other second he'd turn it on and WHHOOOOOSH!

flëétwøöd måçk (jaxon), Friday, 30 June 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

good revival and an even better record, criminally underappreciated last year...."Rock n Roll" and "I See Colours" are actually on my Top 25 Most Played on iTunes.

huzzah for Boston underground music!

MagnaGardner (New Media Intern), Friday, 30 June 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

His shows sound like a positive experience.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 30 June 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

i hate saying things like this, but it was one of the most entertaining hip hop shows i've ever been to

Ok, it's been 4 years and this record is still great.

...anything new on the horizon from him? news?

city worker, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

can't believe it's 4 years old, haven't heard a peep about him since
