Mouse On Mars + Mark E. Smith(!!).. "Wipe That Sound" 12"

So, I just listened to the Mouse On Mars "Wipe That Sound" 12". Two version feature Mark E. Smith on it, and another features Tears The Muffin Man.

The Mark E. versions are charming, but wow is the man losing his mind. I mean, he's always been on a different plain than all of us I suppose, but it sounds like Werner went up to Mark E. at a Fall gig and said "please come in to our studio.. We want to record you. Just ramble. We have plenty of beer. Just say 'wipe that sound' somewhere, and that will be fine. :) :) ".. and Mark E. does the absolute minimal amount to fulfill the request. He's practically slobbering.. whereas he used to come up with stuff about homeless people in electronic song cameos like "Plug Myself In" (w/ D.O.S.E. back in 1996, and "I'm In Deep" with Coldcut in 1989), he now sounds like a homeless person.. like a Tom Waits character without sounding like Waits, obv. singing to himself, sitting on a wet sidewalk brownbaggin' it, like he's hitting hard times... in the opening of a dark alley in the midst of a fashionable block of downtown WhereverHeIs.

I kinda like the Tears The Muffin Man version the best, and I like the entire single.. but I still prefer the album version over all of these.

Anyway.. your thoughts?

I'm sorry, I'm just singing the Muffin Man song to myself here. (Next up, "Manamana.")

Anyway, I was basically saying that Mark E. Smith is now sounding more like a pirate than ever before.. he even starts sounding gruff in that "ARRRRRRR" way, out of nowhere, somewhere in the song.

fluxblog:
"For those of you familiar with Mark E. Smith and the original version of the Mouse On Mars song: Yeah, it's pretty much MES doing his thing over a less busy version of the MOM instrumental. For those of you who aren't: It's a bit like having a weird old guy trying to tell you an incoherant anecdote at a loud, crowded dance club."

I SAID, YOU DONT LOOK LIKE ... NO GODDAMN SINGER-SONGWRITER TO ME

Despite the word that its not as good as the original (though, not much was for me in '04), I REALLYREALLY wanna hear this!

It's nowhere as good as the original "Wipe That Sound" (and I say that as a huge Fall fan, and someone who is usually bored by MoM.)

two years pass...

So is anyone else digging the Von Sudenfeld album as much as I am?

Sure! There's another thread about it already though:

Anticipate? New collaboration between Mouse On Mars and Mark E. Smith is called Von Südenfed.

StanM, Monday, 28 May 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

I searched Sudenfeld but couldn't find it. Missing the umlaut, probably.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 28 May 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

It's because you put an L in sudenfeLd.

Will M., Monday, 28 May 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

but it could also ber the umlaut. i don't know much about the internet :/

Will M., Monday, 28 May 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, that erroneous L keeps cropping up. My fingers want it to exist.

Don't worry about it, Nilck.

StanM, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'm over it.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

He's right, we should just move on.
