mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

there's something to be said for trying to think of ten without looking at the list tho - as in the ten you remember first that you do like MUST be your favourites...

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Naah.. Brains don't work like dat..

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

i didn't follow the charts, so my 10 would include a bunch of non-no. 1 stuff tho!

henry miller, Monday, 10 January 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

i just hate looking at that list - so much chaff

Bloody 'ell. That was tough! I don't even remember "Black Coffee" at all, but I remember liking it at the time. Holly Val's Kis*2 nearly made that list, and I'm not much keen on it anyway.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, Sounds of.. Drop Five for that one...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

actually, i'll have the remix to ignition instead of bedingfield. i can't believe 'no good advice' was not no. 1.

henry miller, Monday, 10 January 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Nor was "Murder On The Dancefloor" :-(

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 10 January 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm down to a shortlist of 50! Oh dear. I am too pop.

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

surprised people are plumping for 'black coffee' (william orbit's weakest moment after 'american pie' imo) over 'pure shores'

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Spiller - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)
Sugababes - Freak Like Me
Girls Aloud - Sounds Of The Underground
Tatu - All The Things She Said
R Kelly - Ignition
Evanescence - Bring Me To Life

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

this thread has made me think: william orbit, whither?

henry miller, Monday, 10 January 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Aaargh, didn't notice "Pure Shores".

bugger
bugger
bugger

Jedmond (Jedmond), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

i noticed it, and it was a close call, but maybe it's the lameness of the video that counts agin 'pure shores'.

it's actually kinda disturbing

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

woah has the USA really gone three years now without a number 1 hit that WASN'T from the hip-pop/rnb world? extraordinary (note: i have no idea who Clay Aiken is or sounds like so am taking it from Nickelback)

I could've sworn that Hoobastank got to #1 in 2004, but apparently not.

What the hell happened in the US 2002? - why so few No.1 hits - don't tell it was dominated that much by those songs.

Well, Nickelback and Usher extended their initial 2001 runs into mid-February of 2002 -- after that, J.Lo was #1 for 6 weeks, Ashanti for 10 weeks, Nelly for 7 weeks, Nelly f/Kelly Rowland for 10, Kelly Clarkson for 2, and Eminem for 8.

Pre-Soundscan, it didn't used to be this way (although I'm not sure why exactly that system makes a difference). I remember being amazed when "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" was #1 for 7 weeks in the summer of 1991 -- that was a truly remarkable feat, now it's par for the course.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

You're lucky, it was number one for about a decade over here (15 weeks to be slightly more precise).

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Anybody else really shocked at how much better the UK list is than the US?

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 10 January 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

gah, no, replace "Oops..." with "Everytime" actually.

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 10 January 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

One of them has Mariah Carey on it.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 10 January 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I include Keating with Westlife for the purposes of continuing to block his existence from my brain.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 January 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

of course if I could only erase one it would be Dry Your Eyes, I never thought I'd hate a song more than Westlife :(

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 January 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

the usual suspects of toxic, kiss kiss, independent women, gotta get thru this.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

there have been as many good number twos as number ones in the UK charts this decade i think

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

anyone who doesn't like "life is a rollercoaster" doesn't like or understand pop music.

i don't understand how black artists having number one singles in america counts as "disturbing." having a segregated r&b chart for 50+ years is i think considerably more disturbing. consider the last few years payback time.

that having been said, what was all this kerfuffle about bright eyes having the number one and two singles in billboard a couple of months ago? or was that just in a specialist indie chart?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

Let's hear it for the ladies! The UK scores so far:

9: Sugababes - Freak Like Me
8: Tatu - All The Things She Said
7: Spiller - Groovejet
6: Girls Aloud - Sounds Of The Underground
6: Britney Spears - Toxic
5: All Saints - Black Coffee
5: Will Young - Leave Right Now
5: Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head

64 singles (or 41%) have received at least 1 vote, out of a total pool of 155.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and re. the recent US hip-hop/R&B dominance... let's not forget that vast swathes of late 1950s to mid 1960s US chart pop consisted of white artists popularising R&B songs and styles. In which case, maybe the main difference between then and now is that it's the original artists who get to enjoy the success.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

“Ms. Jackson,” OutKast
“Hey Ya!,” OutKast
“The Way You Move,” OutKast

Hmm. Now stumped.

Also, "The Reason" went to #2, but I'm pretty sure that was during the Usher blitz of Spring 2004, and alas, the power ballad of the 00s was denied the top spot.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

It is so fucking sad that Nickelback could quite possibly be the last rock band to ever top the US charts.

UK #1s which I would have expected to pick up at least one vote by now: Here it comes! Picked before I scrolled and realised this thread was so damn long too.

Melanie C with Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes - Never Be The Same Again
U2 - Beautiful Day
Rui Da Silva featuring Cassandra - Touch Me
Eminem - Stan
DJ Pied Piper - Do You Really Like It
Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head
Afroman - Because I Got High
Sugababes - Freak Like Me
Fatman Scoop - Be Faithful
Spiller - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)

Picked from list, one artist only, confirms my gut feeling that 2004 was a shockingly poor year for good pop singles.

Girls Aloud actually shit shockah!, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

or was that just in a specialist indie chart?

No, but it was the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. (Songs on the Hot 100 do not have to be officially released as singles, and airplay is weighed more heavily.) Bright Eyes at #1 and #2 is definitely surprising but not totally unthinkable; since the singles market in the U.S. is so depleted, an moderately successful indie band with obsessive, completist fans is not a bad candidate for a sales champ.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

I mean, "Songs on the regular Hot 100 do not have to be ..."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

marcello there's still an r&b chart, but it is just fairly recent (past five years?) that top 40 stations can be relied on to play hip-hop (even the lone holdout in atlanta plays the nelly/tim mcgraw tune), that wall being broken down is what created this watershed. the billboard top 100 is an overall chart, hence tons of country even though few top 40 stations play any country besides shania and maybe dixie chicks. bright eys was had a number one single the same way yoko ono had two number one singles last year, on a subchart.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

where'd you get the lists of #1s from, Jay?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

So apparently I like embarassing music. Who knew! (I may or may not have bought two copies of one of the higher-placed entries)

UK:

10. Sugababes - Freak Like Me
9. Elvis vs JXL - A Little Less Conversation
8. Robbie and Nicole - Something Stupid
7. Will Young - Leave Right now
6. Eminem - Without Me
5. A1 - Same Old Brand New You
4. Blu Cantrell & Sean Paul - Breathe
3. Tatu - All The Things She Said
2. Gareth Gates - Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake)
1. Gareth Gates - Unchained Melody

four years pass...

A best Nunber 1 of the Decade poll might be nice?

piscesx, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 22:46 (fifteen years ago)

ignition mentioned 500 too few times on this thread.

caek, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 22:49 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, re: "Ignition" -- wtf, kind of weird that few ilxors seemed to know it (or at least acknowledge it) in 2005 yet. I don't consider myself all that in the loop, yet I'm pretty sure I featured it for one of my EOY lists back in '03. Did ILM pretty much sleep on it until recently?

Lostandfound, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

uh no

brutt fartve (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 03:01 (fifteen years ago)

electrical audio's sm57 (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 03:07 (fifteen years ago)

uh no

But breezy dismissals don't explain its relative absence from this thread.

Lostandfound, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 03:40 (fifteen years ago)

it's mentioned five times, and there were a lot of songs released this decade

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

(Very dominated by Norwegian music, but then, the noughties have been the best ever decade for Norwegian music)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

it's mentioned five times, and there were a lot of songs released this decade

I know, but didn't ILM recently vote it as song of the decade? It could well be my imagination, in which case, your instinct to breezily dismiss my question was right in the first place, but if it's not my imagination, don't you think it's odd that it's so underrepresented on a thread about top songs of the decade a good two years after its release?

Lostandfound, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 04:37 (fifteen years ago)

ha my breezy dismissal was borne more out of there being a famous billion post thread on the song in 2003 than the fact that it's so clearly revered, which is a bit more debateable

brutt fartve (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

there's also the matter of the fact that "Ignition" went to #1 in the UK but not the US, which means a lot of the song's biggest fans don't think of it as a #1.

ess-tee-oh-pee (some dude), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago)
