Zero G Sounds presents:
DANIEL BELL (Tresor/7th City/Logistic)
LOCALFIELDS (Zero G Sounds/Unlockedgroove)

Rarely does a techno legend of Dan Bell's stature pass through Boston. Having produced seminal recordings as DBX, Cybersonik, and under his own name for influential labels including Tresor, Logistic, and Accelerate, Bell has left an indelible mark on techno with each successive masterpiece. Bell is a pioneer of the blip/blurp/bleep aesthetic of early Detroit techno, a progenitor whose laurels rest beside Richie Hawtin's and Jeff Mill's respective places. Tonight, he graces us with an exclusive two-hour DJ set that promises to shake your ASS!

Ben Recht aka Localfields is one of the original Zero G Sounds roster artists, having released two outstanding EPs to critical acclaim on the national and international level. A regular in the Boston/Cambridge scene and member of the Unlockedgroove collective, Ben has played everywhere, including a weekly residency at River Gods and countless parties. His live sets always range from eclectic techno to slinky chop-hop, running a gamut of styles from a humorously intelligent tongue-in-cheek perspective. Localfields opens the night with an hour-long set of new live material, including some old favorites revamped for the dancefloor.

when dan bell was in l.a. last year for one of the parties in droid behavior's interface series he rocked the venue so hard the crowd didn't know what to do except freak the hell out... one of those memorable sweaty nights where everything just... clicks. dan bell is great.. i love him.

tzatziki n pita (steph jam), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea what he looks like (this goes for many DJs).

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

actually im not sure since ive only seen him at subtonic, which is this dark stank barely-lit basement where techno nerds go to stand around. and i think it was too dark to make a fair call. though the party was great. you should go

a friend of a friend has a new night at some place called Opal on Winter Street. it starts on the 21st, and legowelt is playing. going to be electro/italo/other stuff.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

i'll be there. i'm short, indian, and bearded if anyone wants to say hi.

arjun (arjun), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I heard about Legowelt playing, but I had no idea where and when. Phil, can you point me to an email or website flyer for the night? You can contact me via email if you'd like.

Bell was great - excellent mixing and flow, some really exciting minimal techno that was heavy on muted cowbells and percussion. I didn't recognize many tunes, but he did drop Sexual Harrassment's "I Need A Freak," and Freaks' "Turning Orange (2 Please U)," which both sounded incredible in the mix. I could've sworn there was a track that sampled Michael Jackson's "Bad" too.

It was nice to meet Arjun there. Crowd was pretty into it, including a whole lot of break-dancing.

there's a very unofficial 12" of this done in a very micro style. it's not really recognisable as 'bad' except for its' strangulated take on the 'i'm bad' vocal. the same people also did a reedit / mix of 'i need a freak' so i'm sure it'll be the same record.

stirmonster, Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

That's probably it. It was pretty demented.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

argh i wana se him play again! he should play here every week!

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

breakdancing??

:| (....), Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Yes! Lots of friendly/drunken dance-offs.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe I missed him when he played LA!

This turned out to be on a bootleg 12" by Villalobos & Luciano! The bside is a drastic micro re-edit of Jackos' "Wanna Be Startin' Something."
