Terrible, *Terrible* songs given away free with some Newspaper CDs... Dud or Very?

Some newspapers give away CDs with their weekend editions.

Some have around 6 to 10 tracks, apparently. Kirsty McColl, Trammps, oh some stuff you may actually like to keep.

Then if you play on, you may find :
Horror songs! From those online MP3 "warehouse" repositories...

They play britpop badly! They do R&B Badly. They remind you of something else specifically without the wit and/or charm!

At these points, I feel some sympathy for those A&R bods who have to wade through tons of demo tapes of stuff that's not exactly rubbish, but mediocre.

four weeks pass...
Coming to a charity shops and car boot sales near you soon!

I'm sure these were a contributory factor in the invasion of Iraq. AOL too.

Some newspapers like The Sun, The Express and The Daily Mail!! This probably should have been filed under 'defend the indefensible'.

And the Guardian too...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't under the impression they gave then away every single weekend?

These newspapers seem to give out free CDs containing different permutations of the same 50 or so songs (usually from Sony and/or Universal). But yes, I had noticed the "bonus tracks" ("Purple Sundays" by Roxy Salmon). Nothing for nothing, eh?

It's not the frequency, it's more the oh aural pollution! Even the Lighthouse Family would be better.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

What gets me, yeah, is that these people have all the techological equipment and the musical instruments and the time to make these songs that have no redeeming qualities! Sorry to get all marissa on yo ass, but EH!

Paul Morley in the Melody Maker, circa early 1984, talking about the Art of Noise: "That thing in there - that studio - is a place of magic. How can a group like the Thompson Twins go into a place like that, with all that technology and the miracles that it can make happen, and come out with music that sounds like it was made in a - mental hospital?"

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

.. and even that (i.e. Thompson Twins) is a step up. But yes, exactly.

That Ministry Of Sound "chill-out" CD that came with The Observer in Autumn 2001 was the first pre-recorded that CD I ever threw in the bin. I recall feeling a strange sense of liberation...

"FCD"

"chillout" = MuZaK"?

the evening standard gives away some good easy listening ones every now and again

I wonder how the Record companies who are complaining about file sharing as it devalues music and denies the artists income can justify the amount of free music which is pumped out every weekend.

I've heard some small record shop owners complaining as the casual buyer who may have bought an oldies comp and consequently other stuff don't bother anymore, as they can't compete with the glut of freebies.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Quite right too. I mean, why go to a small out-of-the-way record shop and buy Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures at a tenner per volume when you can buy the Daily Mail and get "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers for the millionth time?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

I mean, it's only 50p as well! Complete with a free fascist newspaper and supplements!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

I love Marcello.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

this is ILM

Bumfluff, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

.. where you are allowed to love things that begin with M.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Shame you're now Grouty.

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I get my lovin' elsewhere.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

"I Love Marcello" - now there's a good idea for a new board to be started to coincide with the imminent Valentine's Day, eh?

*pause*

perhaps not...
