....sort of a website....it's one of those myspace things the kidz are into these days....Anyway, there is some crappy bio stuff, a few pix, and three Mp3s that a friend of ours recorded in our practice space....I'd be curious to hear what anyone thought of it, good or bad (bad would be interesting, actually since really only supportive friends of mine have heard it thus far)....

Where do you guys usually play in Mpls?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

we have a show at the Triple Rock on the 20th of January...we've played there a few times, the Uptown, Turf Club, and Big V's....probably Big V's the most....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Eric and Jeff were in a band called Gay. Gay broke up. Matt was in a band called Gay, which also broke up. Matt saw an ad for a gay player and answered it. Jeff and Eric said gay could be in the band. They put out and ad for a singer and gay answered it. Gay joined the band. Starting in March of 2004, gay started playing shows in Minneapolis and St. Gay.

Cripple Creek Fairey, Monday, 10 January 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

and now you know......the rest of the story.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

yep and i realize the bio sucks, but i had to write it myself and find it painful to write about the band that i'm in....so apologies.

Wednesday, July 6th

The Voided (dude from Red Life conducting an improv noise rock arkestra!)

NO COVER

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Wow. Through bizarre coincidence, I know people in every band you're playing with. This is what happens when you spend too much time working in a guitar store. Angelic Animosity definitely DOESN'T sound like Blink 182, unless things have changed radically in the last year or so. Really nice guys, screamy sped-up misfits? (best I can do. Sorry) I like 'em though.

This, I guarantee, will be an interesting bill overall. I'll be there.

By the way, M@tt's band is really good, so if yer in the MPLS/STPL area, you should go and see them. So there.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

cool thx for the kind words John...yeah it's a wierdo bill, but I kinda like those type of bills.

interest over Maps of Norway has reached an all-time high. we just turned down a deal with Matador - they weren't keen on our plan to record our album with Eddie Kramer! (open the purse strings, cosley! wtf!) still, it looks like Megaforce, Sanctuary Group, and Death Row are still possibilities!

we've got an exclusive headlining gig at the Turf Club, the hockey arena where the Minnesota Wild play! Due to scheduling conflicts, they'll actually be doing a skatearound during our set....we never thought the NHL lockout would get resolved in time for this show : (

Thursday, August 4th

I was in Midway on Saturday nite, checking out The Shut-Ins, Kontrol Panel, Tijuana Hercules (cool Spencer/Oblivions style blues rave ups by Ex-Mount Shasta dude), and Sicbay, and when I walked out to my car there was this HUGE crazy madness breaking out in front of the Trend Bar, cops all over and some dude walking his chick away from the scene, she looked too drunk or shook up to walk....like dozens of dudes out there....come for the bands, stay for the excitement!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Divebomb Honey are one of my fav local bands...feat. ex members of Sweet J.A.P. and The Goochers, plus Mr. Ollie Stench, the legendary proprieter of Mpls's Ed Gein Fan Club, in Divebomb Honey he plays an old school Krumar analog synth...Divebomb is great, like a more punky early B-52s, really catchy great tag team boy n girl vox, great songs...

Mercurial Rage is some sort of dance-electro thing, supposed to be really cool...i think an ex-member of Hidden Chord....

OMG, whoever it was who mentioned Sioxsie as a touchstone kind of forgot to also mention Cult Hero!

Dan (Godly) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

who's Cult Hero? not familiar....

thx guys. this is prolly our most "punk" song....me and mike wisti (the guys who's producing it) tried and sorta succeeded at getting the "stranglers" type bass tone on this one....

fyi, for ILM Finn nerds...Wisti is the guy that recorded "Half Dead and Dynamite" by ILM favs Lifter Puller....

for No1ze boys, he did the excellent first Vaz record....Demonstrations in Micronesia....is also currently doing the Seawhores' (freddy votel ex of the Cows new band) new record, which he's played for me and I can safely say will rip all yr faces off.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Cult Hero was a one-off incarnation of The Cure where several members got together with one of their drinking buddies and recorded a 7" single "I'm A Cult Hero" b/w "I Dig You". Both of those songs ought to be floating around in the ether.

Dan (Awesome) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

yep...intense...i actually dig mallman...he's sort of an insane performer....i don't know if you heard about the 24-hour and 48-hour long NONSTOP songs he performed (Marathon I and II)? I saw the 24 hour one three times during the 24 hours, it was insane.

possible other band type stuff is possible, not sure how serious i want to be with a band right now though.

The Maps of Norway MySpace page says the band's last show is tonight in St. Paul. I assume/hope that's what M@tt's referring to (otherwise, it's kind of an ominous message!).

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 4 April 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

Good luck at the show tonight.

nice! why the heck are you breaking up?

tylerw, Monday, 13 April 2009 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

ah nothing big, just some ppl didn't really want to do it anymore, weren't having fun anymore and we had said that we wouldn't go on w/o all the original members

wassup rockers? (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 13 April 2009 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno...basically i think there's a point where every band hits where it's either A) you want to do it totally just as a "bowling night" kinda thing or B) you are actually making money and consistently having good shows

wassup rockers? (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 13 April 2009 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that is true. my band's been going just about two years now and i think it's starting to fizzle, though we've been playing out more in the last few months. my wife is pregnant so that will probably be a tidy excuse to wrap it all up. maybe we'll do a little recording beforehand just to document the whole endeavor.

tylerw, Monday, 13 April 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

yeah we did two albums, played a lot of good shows...five years, so not a bad run. will miss it though.

wassup rockers? (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 13 April 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

dude i haven't been checking this thread enough...that song's really ace! you guys get/got a great sound. such a shame it's all coming to an end :(

coincidentally, my own band has its first practice session on wednesday...a sort of spiritual reawakening for the bassists of ILX, maybe? anyway, enough of that until we actually get some results...that video was obviously the result of long-strived-for understanding and groove

yes threads (country matters), Monday, 13 April 2009 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

thx and good luck louis! bands are fun IMO.

wassup rockers? (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 13 April 2009 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

though i've known it forever, i was recently reminded that a solid bass player is the most important thing for a band to have. My band is lacking in that department. It's the kind of thing that you think shouldn't be hard for someone to come in and pick up, but that has not been the case ...

tylerw, Monday, 13 April 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

cheers matt! this one should be good fun - the frontperson has already said "no verses or choruses"

and tylerw you words daunt me :-/ just gotta remember EABEEABEEABE *stares intently at drummer*

yes threads (country matters), Monday, 13 April 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

i think it's just having a good understanding of what a bass player's role is/what a good bass sound is for the kind of music you're playing. and stay locked in with the drummer. there are times when i want to tell my bass player "they call it a rhythm section for a reason!" i actually started out on bass, and back then I just picked three or four bass players who didn't sound super-virtuosic, but sounded good nonetheless. I think they were probably Doug Yule, Kim Deal, James McNew and bass players on Neil Young records. There are a million different levels you can get to, but those are probably decent starting points.

tylerw, Monday, 13 April 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

A) you want to do it totally just as a "bowling night" kinda thing or B) you are actually making money and consistently having good shows

that has been my experience with other bands, but with the brass band it's really both. there are periods where it's a once in awhile excuse to drink with friends and play weddings or whatever, and then there are periods with a lot of club shows, actual tours, etc. i feel like taking breaks is important, and being comfortable with the idea that we're never going to go full-time.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 13 April 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

i think i want to split this conversation off into a separate IMM thread; i've been wanting to talk about motivations for a while, but obviously don't want to stop people from talking about it here also

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 13 April 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

sweet, i've always kinda harbored the desire to play in a live hip hop band situation. seems like it would be totally fun. it's not quite the same thing, but my band is playing a benefit this wknd put on by ... the Flobots, lol.

tylerw, Monday, 6 July 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

nice. i've always wanted to do this too, just haven't had the chance yet.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 6 July 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

yah it's been super fun so far...just real simple, funky parts...some were hard to learn cuz the original basslines were played on a triton keyboard so they'll be like ascending G-A-D parts where the "high" note - D - is actually a drop D, so i gotta rewrite some stuff, so it's challenging in a different way.

bodyguard/publicist Tank (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 6 July 2009 21:08 (sixteen years ago)
