hey, what's the best kevin saunderson cd? is there anything in a similar vein to Model 500 Classics, or Derrick May Innovator?

nina, Monday, 10 January 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, there is a two CD thing exactly like The Innovator. Models & Phases maybe? It misses most of the Inner City hits though, but it's pretty good anyway.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Faces & Phases, ahem.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

lock thread

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh, you'll also need Inner City's "Big Fun" album.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

is inner city more like vocal house than deep derrick may techno stuff?

nina, Monday, 10 January 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh, you'll also need Inner City's "Big Fun" album.

the album title is 'Paradise' isn't it?

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

The Big Three really don't sound anything like each other.
Yeah, KS (in all his work, not just Inner City) is big on house vocals and synth riffs, but uses techno rhythms (his hi-hat programming is May-esque, but not nearly as complex as May's work).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

But Saunderson also did a lot uber-minimal clonky bleep-n-bass style house tracks and a bunch of almost garage-ish vocal tracks too. He's easily the least pigeonholeable of all of the "Big Three".

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

the album title is 'Paradise' isn't it?
In the UK, it was called "Paradise", but in North America, it was "Big Fun". The tracklistings are identical, and the artwork is also very similar.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

ok, another question: where should i start with carl craig? i saw him out in december, and his set was really nice, not too minimal or techy and lots of nice vocal tunes towards the end, but some people have told me alot of his music is a bit too hardcore and boring if you know what i mean.

i got the aztec mystic mix cd the other day and i really love it, especially the first track and track 9, the one with the messy strings and like weird arpeggiater noise in the background - tell me stuff like this to get!

nina, Monday, 10 January 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Get the Psyche/BFC comp.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

is that elements 1989-1990? i'll check it out!

nina, Monday, 10 January 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Yes, that's the right one. I have a few other Craig things, but I'm not sure he ever bettered the early singles.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

also nina, it's been said before here, but 'Landcruising' is a terrific Carl Craig album that somehow went under the radar.

thee music mole, Monday, 10 January 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

problem with Craig is that every album he releases (including as 69 and Innerzone) seems to have a couple of ESSENTIAL tracks on it - a definitive retrospective would be super fine. his DJ Kicks mix also kicks balls.

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 10 January 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

steve, do you have that mixcd from last year still? i forgot the name

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 10 January 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

well judging by my email address.. i guess my answer to this question is obvious.

tzatziki n pita (steph jam), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, and saunderson's best mix cd is definitely xmix. damn. that mix is out of control.

tzatziki n pita (steph jam), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

Ahem. Carl Craig. Secret Tapes of Doctor Eich. Landcruising can go choke on a pretzel.

Doctor Eich >> Food and Revolutionary Art >> Landcruising

I don't actually think a decent Saunderson comp exists, and discogs backs me up. You either have the poppier Inner City albums or nerdy comps of unreleased stuff. Definitely "Faces and Phases" looks the best, but still seems a bit too "serious" to sum him up - need some of that playful "back to the beat" shizzle too...
Shall we compile, three at a time...

1. Velocity Funk - "e dancer"
2. Reese and Santonio - "back to the beat"
3. Inner City - "Good life"

PUMP THE MOVE

i like the kenny larkin remix of it too.

tzatziki n pita (steph jam), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

i do gareth, 'deep space techno' but i found it boring (too latin house)

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

will you give it to me? as a present

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

yes, if i can find it, i did offer it to you at the time!

Landcruising can go choke on a pretzel.

i haven't heard all of '..Food and Revolutionary Art' OR '..Dr Eich' but the final sequence of 'Science Fiction' with the electric guitar is probably my favourite thing he's done and just mind-blowing really. (/prog nonce)

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

y'know kevin saunderson did a mix of material from his KMS label that includes good helpings of both his vocal hardhouse style and his hoover techno style.

it's called KMS: the definitive mix

it's a fantastic mix cd but then again it's nowhere near a complete look at his career. also there's a lot of non-saunderson material (hey, not a bad thing when we're talking about chez damier!) and lots of new school remixing of his old tracks going on.

still, i highly recommend it alongside the faces&phases compilation.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

also it's a fair bet that ANYTHING with carl craig's name on it from before 1999 is going to completely rock your world. ok except maybe the innerzone orchestra album.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

but 'Bug In The Bassbin' is def in his top ten

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

yes yes!! the innerzone ep is indisputably great, but the album is ... not as great.

Vahid OTM. And the Psyche/BFC comp is a tad overrated. I'd pick that one up last.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

i have hardly any carl craig, i must sort this out
'Faces and Phases'is fucking great. lots of it is awfully punishing and mechanistic, very glacial but with huge pre-'eskimo' basslines all over the place...and it does have its poppy moments.
actually he did the dark stuff better than may or atkins IMHO

Owen Hatherley (owen), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Craig's "Throw" 12" as Paperclip People is also required. (Basic Channel remix of e2e4 on the b-side!) also "The Climax" 12" (with what is maybe Basic Channel's greatest effort on the flip)

That said, I'll say that Kevin Saunderson is the only DJ that made me stop breathing with his set. KOed!

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

ok except maybe the innerzone orchestra album.

Bah, so it seems i'm forever doomned to be the person who actually thinks this is his best work (ah well, i love all his stuff except that Detroit Bastard Experiment.)

back to thread though: another yea for F&P (of course it should've been a triple cd with the Inner City stuff, but then again I don't really miss it.)

Fine DJ too.

kevin saunderson at lost, holloway road, 2004, was amazing. i'd still love to hear a tape/mp3/cd of that, whatever it was he was playing

Maybe I missed the discussion on another thread, but the recent remixes of Kevin Saunderson's hits have me digging through his back catalogue. I don't know if it's just out of respect or what but the new remixes don't really seem to stand up to the originals. I already had most of those (original) tracks, but I'm sure there must be more in the same vein. I'm not too impressed with the selection on Faces & Places so far.

Since I'm mostly relying on ahem $lsk to find the stuff, which tracks should I be on the lookout for? Caveat: "Til We Meet Again" is one my favorites, so yes, I do like it cheesy.

Funny how one mention of Carl Craig derailed this whole thread. I just got a chance to check out his Essential Mix from '95, and it's much better than I expected. Occasional sloppy mixing, but truly superb track selection!

just check out the song "pump the move" by e-dancer

elan, Monday, 28 July 2008 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

i don't take time for me to blow your mind
It takes a second to wreck it because you're dumb and blind

elan, Monday, 28 July 2008 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

that is what the holy spirit of kevin saunderson said to me when that song played

elan, Monday, 28 July 2008 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

i liked that joris voorn mix of 'bassline' from volume 2 a lot, it's probably the best of the reworks.

wish i could find a copy of this!

haitch, Monday, 28 July 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

i like tronikhouse a lot.

if there is a 10 minute version of "rock to the beat" you should try to check that out.

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 28 July 2008 01:03 (seventeen years ago)

"multifunction" is a dope tronikhouse track that sounds like an very very atonal todd terry

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 28 July 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the e-dancer comp / album 'Heavenly' - or did they... I would have said it was one of the best things he's done (although 4 of the track are remixes). The Juan Atkins and Carl Craig mixes in particular, are great.

sam500, Monday, 28 July 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

I still haven't given his X-mix a proper airing. I picked it up last year and it failed to move me after a couple of brief listens. Worth persevering with...?

sam500, Monday, 28 July 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

i give you $10 for it

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 28 July 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

haha is it worth that much? if i find another copy will send on...

sam500, Monday, 28 July 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, if you like e-dancer ... it's basically an hour of tracks in the e-dancer vein. tribal 4x4 beats, reese basslines, hoover synths, right?

i think about that mix every time i hear e-dancer's "human bond" or practically anything by orlando voorn (particularly playboy's "in da jungle" or ghetto brothers' "pumpin bass manouevres") ... such a great sound.

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 28 July 2008 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I think it was the relentless tribalism that I didn't like last time but I'm sure I could be persuaded if I was in the right mood.

sam500, Monday, 28 July 2008 04:17 (seventeen years ago)
