I heard it this morning in a coffee shop but had to head to work before I could ask the barista. Anybody know? Thanks.

Are you sure you don't mean "Hippychick" by Soho which samples "How Soon is Now?"

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 January 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's all I could come up with too.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

No. It was 'This Charming Man.'

righteousmaelstrom, Monday, 10 January 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm curious. Damn.

I did a little digging in google and saw that Stars sampled a riff for their cover of this song.

Stars experts: Is this it? Was it the intro riff only?

righteousmaelstrom, Monday, 10 January 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

"You Can't Hurry Love" by Phil Collins?

Justin, Monday, 10 January 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

I think '10 0000 Morrisseys' by Mr Floppy sampled the intro riff to TCM, but only in a "play a recording of this riff once then shout lots about how awful Morrissey fans are" way. It probably wasn't that.

Sorry - 10 000, not 10 0000. What's with all these spaces anyway? Maybe a comma? But that confuses the French! Numbers are hard.

No. I'm pretty sure that wasn't it either.

righteousmaelstrom, Monday, 10 January 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

There must be some sort of Smiths/Morrissey fan there, because I've also heard 'Everyday is Like Sunday,' so '10 000 Morrisseys' is probably out too.

righteousmaelstrom, Monday, 10 January 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

It could well be Stars. They did a cover of "This Charming Man" on their first full-length disc, Nightsongs. The background music is the typical Stars keyboard/light drumming and then they throw in the riff from the beginning of the Smiths song. I'll put it up in here for your perusal.

Stars - This Charming Man care of You Send It, for a limited time only ...

Gregory T (tubesocks), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

wouldn't someone who recognized a sample of a song also recognize that the song is indeed a cover? i doubt it was the stars cover.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

i agree with you. but it was his suggestion upthread, so i was feeding his curiousity. also, the lyrics are somewhat muted, so possibly he didn't realize it was a cover.

Gregory T (tubesocks), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

"say hello to the angels" by interpol, perhaps?

spasticheritage, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

well, that's not a sample, but they nicked the riff anyway...

spasticheritage, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Hang on. I did a tune that sampled that intro...

Where did you hear it again?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

100 000!

Last Night by the Strokes? The bass line is the same at least. You could trace it through pop history from You Can't Hurry Love via Lust for Life & A Town Called Malice

bham, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

Apologies - it was indeed 100 000 Morrisseys. I lost count!

That's the song! All I had heard was the end with the sample on it in a busy coffee shop so I couldn't tell who it was. I'm a big Stars fan (as cutty may be able to attest) so if I had heard the vox I would have figured it was Stars. Great, this means I now have to get this album in addition to Set Yourself on Fire (which is probably hitting my mailbox as I type). Thanks, Gregory!

righteousmaelstrom, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

What about that great dsico Eminem/Smiths mashup?
