The Cuica!

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

What's the thing that goes ooo-ooo-ooo? That thing.

k3rry (dymaxia), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

I don't know. I was hoping ILM would tell me. Unless you mean the cuica.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

He means the cuica.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Berimbau.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

If you ever feel like making a bunch of really drunk hippies laugh their asses off, just pick up and play a cuica. HIPPY COMEDY GOLD.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

(What's a Brazilian Afro-Cuban?)

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

The agogo bells! I just ordered some more last night.

S: surdos (!!!!!), cuica, agogo bells, big cowbells, pandeiro/tambourin, repinique (the Brazilian timbale, played with one stick and one bare hand), triangle (ridiculously hard to play Brazilian-style)

D: Caixa (I don't really like Brazilian snare drums, the little malacachetas are a little cooler though)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

I like caxixis (shakers that have different sounds depending on which direction you shake them) too but can't play them worth shit for some reason.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it is the cuica. Thanks. The Berimbau is cool too. I used to have a 'Latin' drum machine that had all of that stuff. Hours of fun.

k3rry (dymaxia), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

He means the cuica
Oh yeah. My favorite thing it does is when it makes a sound like the Coco Puffs cuckoo trying to be a human (avian?) beatbox. The reference books say that it was originally some kind of lion call in Africa, IIRC.

Man, I was actually thinking about getting one of those but now it's starting to seem kind of passe.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Cool. Is that where you bought the agogos?

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Yep! Their shipping is pretty high unless it's a big order, so I got in on someone else's (the local batucada group).

I really want a timba or tam-tan, but they're expensive and I'm not very good at hand drums anyway.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Brazilian Afro-Cuban
I was originally going to just say "Brazilian" but I didn't want to limit the tread. Insert a slash if you like.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

If we allow generally Latin, African, etc. or "world percussion," I gotta vote for the kalimba.

In addition to the usual conga/bongo/shaker/tambourine stuff, I will sometimes use a bodhran. I have a riq (small single-headed Egyptian tambourine), but I've never used it in a serious musical setting.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I firmly believe that tambourines with jingles and one head are the funkiest musical instruments ever, especially when played gospel-style with one hand holding it and hitting against the palm of the other hand with sort of a flipping motion. That's kind of how people play bodhran, isn't it?

Brazilian tambourine playing is really hard.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Bodhran technique is weird. One hand is inside it for dampening. With the other, the motion is sometimes described as "point the beater at your navel. Now pretend you're playing rhythm guitar." It is a motion unlike anything else.

I must confess that I'm not very good at playing the tambourine. I've always been in awe of people who can do a roll on a tambourine. Mostly I use hit a stand-mounted headless one with a stick.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

i have a cuica, but i think i mighta gotten a bass version of it because it doesn't make high pitched monkey noises. it sounds more like i'm farting :(

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Maybe you need to change your diet, JaXoN.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

What about the big Turkish tambourine that inspired the song "Mister Tambourine Man" - what's that one called?

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

I think it is called a mazhar.

"i have a cuica, but i think i mighta gotten a bass version of it because it doesn't make high pitched monkey noises. it sounds more like i'm farting :("

I think you just have to do it faster, no?

Just learned about the chajchas last night.

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 13 November 2022 14:46 (two years ago)

Made from goat or sheep hooves . Interesting.

I need to look at video clips I took of Jorge Drexler’s band Friday night. They had some hand held rattling percussion instruments. Probably not chajchas though
