1. Haters
2. Out of Breach
3. Stop Bothering Michael Jackson
4. Tiger Bastard
5. We Love Guys Named Luke
6. Throwing Up
7. So Weak People
8. Paris Hilton
9. I'm Coming to Get You
10. Like a Little Bitch
11. Extreme

It's definately darker than Afro Finger, and just as good, if not better.

So Weak People, Tiger Bastard, and We Love Guys Named Luke all kill.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

i liked the last one. kinda psyched

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

it's hot

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

i really don't feel like this is close to afro finger but it's still very good nonetheless. its certainly a little crazier and disjointed, especially the second half.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

Didn't like Afro Finger, like this one.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

Loved Afro Finger and am not as blown away by this thus far. Paris Hilton seems an odd choice for first single though, as there is much better to be found here.

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

its quite different isnt it? afro gel sounds tighter and much more rhythmic to me. apparently mu & maurice have a mandate to make a markedly different record every time out.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

wow, alliter-y.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

this album is insane. i find myself laughing - at lines like "leave michael jackson alone, you stupid bitch!" - more than anything, but i also enjoy a lot of it. not nearly as good as afro finger gel, or whatever that one was called.

Kareem Estefan (Kareem Estefan), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

Loved Afro Finger and am not as blown away by this thus far.

Agreed. I think my favorite was "We Love Guys Named Luke". I'll have to give it another spin.

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

thanks for reminding me to get this.

Rizz (Rizz), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

I like the craziness, but nothing comes close to "Let's Get Sick" or "Chair Girl". It's certainly less dancable. But Maurice Fulton is a genius, so I should give this a few more tries...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

nothing comes close to "Let's Get Sick"

this is my feeling so far, as well. "Let's Get Sick" completely confounded me when I first heard it. For a while there, everything seemed bland by comparison. It was required listening for anyone who visited the house (which, honestly, isn't that many people). It's a tough precedent to match. I agree Maurice Fulton is a wacked out genius, so I too am willing to give this one multiple spins to test my first impressions.

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

that covers great.
i've had a burn for a while and agree with the general sentiment here, i dont think i like it as much as afro finger.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

first album was a sharp reminder that sometimes critics can hype some right old rubbish.

Haven't felt quite so bored, underwhelmed and foolish for buying a record in a very long time.

lurkerer, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

Wait - this isn't the U2 "How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'" thread !

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

"Tiger Bastard" is fantastic. "Paris Hilton" is... less so, though it did make me laugh. I definitely want to hear the rest of it.

haitchâ„¢ (haitch), Thursday, 13 January 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

I've only picked up the single and both 'Paris Hilton' and 'We Love Guys Named luke' are fantastic. As for PH, I'm hooked by those awesome tangents of sinewy acid house and electro coursing through its heart, but I can understand why people feel averse to PH. It's a lot more confronting with its sparse sounds all brought right up-front in the mix. That's what makes its dreadful for headphones but perfect for dancefloors.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

see them in america in the next few days. should be great live.

Awesome! Can't wait.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

where are those dates from?

it's tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 13 January 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

mu's publicist.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 January 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

i don't know if the chicago venue is actually correct. can anyone confirm?

it's tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 13 January 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

i'm kinda disappointed so far. i quite like 'paris hilton' but there isn't as much linear freak-funk, it's all way way more scattered, almost forcibly awkward. i dunno, nothing destroys me like 'tell you something', 'let's get sick' or 'afro finger'.

i fucking love afro finger, it was a top 10 album for me in 2003. this is not in the same room on first couple listens.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Friday, 14 January 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

i think the schizo quotient is definitely just as high, but afro finger gel had rhythms for miles and miles and miles - this one is more of a drippy mess.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 14 January 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

the SF date is at Mighty, i think...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 14 January 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

looks like the chicago date is cancelled...

it's tricky (disco stu), Friday, 14 January 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

cancelled? it was just announced!

Rizz (Rizz), Thursday, 20 January 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

this has been in my queue since i found it... it's driving me crazy

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 20 January 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

this has made me go back and listen to afro finger, though... and i wonder if it will sound as classic and crazy in the future if it does now... apart from some no-wave stuff... is there an analog? even in fulton's other work?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 20 January 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

ok.. found what seems to be, fulton-wise, the production framework that would become mu on his remix of Sugar Man... Don't know who it's by. I suppose it could even have come after Afro Finger... but a lot of the beat patterns are exactly the same and it doesn't sound much like a lot of other stuff from him...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

i'm talking to myself here but i had expected this to sound much more harsh by these descriptions... i'm six songs in and all of these songs would still work in a club!

i think it's at least equal to afro finger so far.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 20 January 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

does anybody like "...stress" or "boof!" or the ladyvipb album?? how about eddie and the eggs??

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 January 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Haven't heard "...stress" or "boof!", or "Eddie and the Eggs" - but have heard and love "Ladyvipb".

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 21 January 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

haven't really heard anything from maurice that i haven't liked... but i haven't heard any of the other pseudonyms, excepting one boof song which was only ok.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 21 January 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Maybe i gotta listen more but i don't get the adoration here. Shrieking vocals, retro acid n funk n postpunk beats...

steve-k, Sunday, 27 March 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

You guys don't like Paris Hilton? Safety Scissors dropped in his warmup set for Michael Mayer at SF and the place went NUTS!

whatever (nordicskilla), Sunday, 27 March 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

i only wish i could get the record. i've been looking, literally, since before it came out all over the web and at record stores that exist in the 3d world we live in. no luck. : (

i have the mp3, obv, but i really want to play that song out.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Sunday, 27 March 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

title track is incredible

Dominique (dleone), Sunday, 27 March 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

firstworldman, they had it in Amoeba SF. Time for a road trip!

whatever (nordicskilla), Sunday, 27 March 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah, no kidding! that's weird they had it, seeing as my trip to amoeba in LA was fruitless, and they told me a while ago that they've been trying to order it since january 3rd with no luck. TIME FOR A REPRESS, OUTPUT, PLEASE THANKS.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Sunday, 27 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

I like current r'n'b and hiphop beats, and old house and postpunk rhythms more. The Yokoish screams are ho-hum.

steve-k, Sunday, 27 March 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I see that critics Sasha Frere-Jones, M. Matos, Jess Harvell, and I think Simon Reynolds all like this alot. I still don't understand the appeal.

I think I got my copy from insound.

steve-k, Sunday, 27 March 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Mu performed in Miami WMC last night w/james murphy spinning for a Tokion party. She and Maurice were both there. She was amazing.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 28 March 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

this is fucking great until throwing up. by the end of we love guys when the gtrs come in i was grinning like a fuckwit. then...uh...o no. the chicken noises at the beginning of paris h made me laugh but the rest? so weak people & like a little bitch are the annoying cutesy shit i was dreading.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

does anyone know the lyrics to the paris hilton song besides the BAGOCK?

so far i got, um:

you got the next part transcribed correct... but i am not near the song and don't remember the rest off the top of my head.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Sunday, 10 April 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

after /beauty/ it should say /photogenic/

firstworldman (firstworldman), Sunday, 10 April 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

is Output the main distributor for MU in the UK?

rizzx (rizzx), Sunday, 10 April 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

how is it that i couldn't understand "sex tape"...

thanks!

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 10 April 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

According to the booklet, it's:
"I'm the richest party dumb girl/ would you like to look at my sex tape/Natural Beauty, Photogenic/Always ready to pose for nice shots/Put my poppy Chanel dress/He sleeps Louis Vuiton bag/Silver spoon, champagne bath/Mom! I want that one, Please!"

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

is Output the main distributor for MU in the UK?

They're signed to Output now, and distributed everywhere through them. Apparently they had a pretty nasty falling out with Tigersushi- "Tigerbastard" is about them.

Telephonething, Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

i interviewed her for xlr8r and she said lotsa stuff about tigersushi that wouldn't fly in print. that was not a happy situation.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

will it fly here?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
i would like to draw everyone's attention to the "paris hilton" music video for a sec.

now that i've done so, thank you and good night.

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

worst interview i've ever had to do, btw

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

why?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

it took forever to set up, and then she was super combative. plus i had like half a day to turn it around. plus i hate interviews.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

where will it eventually run?

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

a fashion magazine in canada, oddly enough

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

so i just got the album on vinyl and paris hilton and extreme make my needle bounce like a motherfucker : (

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

strongo: WHAT? who?!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

(nb: i did an in-person interview, she wasn't remotely combatative, and it wz STILL a nightmare.)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

(altho the honor of worst interview ever still goes to guitar wolf circ. 1999)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

(i still feel this mu record is ridiculously slept on, btw. i find it very... cleansing.)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

"cleansing"

Well, she does make vomiting sounds on that one track.

steve-k, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually settling on the notion I like this record better than the first (even though there are 2 or 3 songs I skip every time).

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

anyone else heard the vinyl? is the jumping of my needle because my needles/cartridges suck or is it the record (or my record)?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

strongo what canadian fashion mag?!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

wow. I wonder what happened between them and tigersushi. I love Maurice Fulton, but also tigersushi. hmm I was wondering if tigerbastard had something to do with the label heh

Just heard this but I haven't heard Afro Finger. It's bloody mental is all I can say. Not sure if it's twisted genius or just twisted. A lot of it reminds me of Ec8or and the rest of the Digital Hardcore stuff from the late 90s but if I ignore all that there's definitely something to come back to.

I can't help laughing at "How much is da? That's too expensive! I don't wannit! I don't wannit! You're a BASTARD!"

not as good as afro finger gel. this one's pretty raucous, disjointed and hard to tap into properly in a way that afro finger gel wasn't. or maybe one album was all i could ever handle from this duo and i never gave this one enough time.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 8 December 2008 12:42 (sixteen years ago)
